February 25, 201411 yr Yet they (Hill, Frisaro, et al) will rave about his defensive ability. His glove is solid, yes. His range, not so much. Man, if Perry Hill didn't position him properly so often (as he supposedly does), then how many more balls would have gotten through?
February 25, 201411 yr I read that Hill apparently fucked up his positioning last year. He was the best defensive player going to his left but the worst to his right or something like that
February 25, 201411 yr yes that's exacatly right. best to his left, worst to his right. which sounds like generally he would still be average, so the going-right numbers must've been really severe. At least he sounded completely open to the notion that his positioning could've been off, rather than poo-poo'ing the idea as the older coaches tend to do. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/11/30/marlins-think-adeiny-hechavarria-is-better-with-the-glove-than-defensive-metrics-indicate/ “I guess the numbers don’t lie. I need to do a better job getting him in the right place, bottom line. will be interesting to see how his numbers reflect this season if that adjustment is made, because otherwise you wouldn't expect much would change as far as the kid's abilities defensively.

Putting him at third base would make the amount of space he needs to move to his right much less. Someone with a stronger grasp of advanced defensive metrics, would this make any sense?
February 25, 201411 yr Logically, that does make sense. Keep him close to the line and see what he could do there. People would crap all over it, though, cause he's not a power bat and third is a power position. And I think that Perry Hill quote was sarcasm, personally. I remember an article with that quote before and thought the same back then.
February 25, 201411 yr Or you could just shift his position so he gets a leg up on balls to his right. That's Perry Hill's fucking job
February 25, 201411 yr Author Or you could just shift his position so he gets a leg up on balls to his right. That's Perry Hill's f***ing job Yeah, but he'll still have to range a lot to both sides, no matter where you play him at shortstop. Given his lack of offense, he'd have to be Simmons-esque with the glove/arm in order to have any value at all.
February 25, 201411 yr 100% I agreed with linked article about Hech's poor stats. His numbers were too terrible to play at shortstop, even. Definitely, Drew can upgrade it, but always said that, the cost concerns.
February 25, 201411 yr Huh? It means what I said. It's an amateur site that warrants no more discussion than any post made on these boards.
February 26, 201411 yr Yeah, but he'll still have to range a lot to both sides, no matter where you play him at shortstop. Given his lack of offense, he'd have to be Simmons-esque with the glove/arm in order to have any value at all. Considering Simmons posted .130 more OPS than Adeiny, he would actually have to be significantly better than Simmons with the glove to have "any value."
February 26, 201411 yr Author Considering Simmons posted .130 more OPS than Adeiny, he would actually have to be significantly better than Simmons with the glove to have "any value." Simmons has plenty of value (6.8 rWAR last season) so if Adeiny could be half the player Simmons is, we'd have a solid shortstop on our team. When I referred to "any value" I meant a player that does not actually take wins away from the team. If Adeiny put up 3.4 rWAR, I would be ecstatic. At this rate, his entire career will be worse than one season of Andrelton's. (Yeah, yeah, small sample size...)
