December 12, 200322 yr I think the Benitez talks could have some effect on Vlad. I recently read an article which stated that Vlad was looking for a substantial Latin community and a Team with fellow dominicans on it. Currently Luis is the only Dominican on our team. Benitez would be the second. All of a sudden Benitez is looking a little better. As far as fitting Vlad in our budget I think it could be done as follows: JP2.3/LC4.5/VG10/ML6.5/MC0.3/JC3.0/AG3.5/RC0.4 = 30.5 JB2.5/BP3.0/DW0.3/CP3.0/AB2.5 = 11.3 AB2.5/CF1.2 3.7 Total 45.5 Which leaves 4.5 for bench, #5 starter and minimal bullpen help. Vlads deal 2004 10.0/2005 11.0/2006 12.0/2007 13.0/2008 14.0 5 year $60 million without deferred money.
December 12, 200322 yr Cleveland is still working on their youth movement trying to deal with a lower payroll. even if i had seen this rumor.....you would think 95% it was a hoax. gotta love this time of year.
December 12, 200322 yr Yeah, I liked it better when the Marlins were a small payroll team and didnt go after big name free agents.... NOT!!!!!!!! BRING ME VLAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have a nice day!!!!! :mischief
December 12, 200322 yr Ed are the Marlins truly serious about making a hard run at Vlad or does it only remain only as a possibility? Could they make him a proposal during the Winter meetings?
December 12, 200322 yr Vlad not going to the low budget, rebuilding Indians with tons of young outfielders??? What a shocker. You people worry too easily, don't believe everything you hear.
December 12, 200322 yr If you go to the MLB.com home page and click on the Cream of The Free Agent Crop story... http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/news/mlb...lb_nd&fext=.jsp you'll see Marlins are now listed as pursuing Lopez and Guerrero
December 12, 200322 yr Does Vlad need another reason to come to Florida?..How about playing for a team trying to repeat as World Series Champs!!!!
December 12, 200322 yr There is no official word yet on whether this story is true or not. I don't understand why the mods deleted the original thread concerning this, as there are about 100 threads concerning "will the Marlins sign Pudge" or "Castro's career numbers" etc. Why delete an entire thread without a reason? I love this message board, but I do question some of the decisions in the way that it is being managed around here.
December 12, 200322 yr If it turns out true, it'll be brought back. The replies to the topic were not constructive and were getting to be spam. It was not your fault.
December 12, 200322 yr Thanks for the heads up Admin. I've e-mailed Joe Ptak (the guy who runs CIR) about this, but haven't heard back from him yet. I also have him on my AIM buddy list, and I haven't seen him online yet, but I do know that he was online when the story was posted on CIR.

December 12, 200322 yr Vlads deal 2004 10.0/2005 11.0/2006 12.0/2007 13.0/2008 14.0 5 year $60 million without deferred money. That doesn't sound bad, but Montreal made a 5-year $70 Million offer, and this may be asking for too much of a hometown discount. I was thinking along the lines of 6-years $81 Million, that comes to this: '04- 11.0/'05- 12.0/'06- 13.0/'07- 14.0/'08- 15.0/'09- 16.0 I don't know if that would cost us too much over the first 2/3 years, but if it did, you could always take maybe $2 Million off the first two years and spread it toward the back two or three years, when we have a stadium.
