5/14 Post Game - Game 1

Not sure what that means, but, either way, Nicolino is bad. If you think he's actually good because of his small sample ERA, prepare to be disappointed.

And if you think you have him figured out in that small sample size, you're wrong. I'm not saying he will be good, I'm not saying he will be bad. But you're rant about how awful he is ignorant.

Stanton is basically doing what he's done his whole career. And his career has been pretty good so far.

The fact that Christian Yelich has taken his game to another level and might be this team's actual consistent star shouldn't be a knock on Stanton. If anything, it's even more proof that the rest of the roster is not good enough.

Seriously, 40% of the nights we play, we send out a terrible SP (Nicolino/Cosart). Tough to be great when your #4 & 5 are among the worst starters in the big leagues. And then you also have to consider that we have a mediocre record because we've let bums like Narveson, Morris, and Breslow decide games.

It's hard to give someone such a negative look so early. Look at Arieta's numbers prior to joining the Cubs, lol.

His strikeout rate was the same in the minor leagues.

You can't teach a guy with mediocre stuff to all of the sudden have great stuff. He's not good.

So I'm assuming by "rest of the roster" you mean our pitching...?

Cosart already has the honor of being our arrieta.  Nicolino more like our Kershaw

But Arrieta always had good stuff.

You're comparing a guy who always threw mid-90's to Nicolino who...does not even come close. It's not even about the numbers or today's game. Watching the games, you can see that his stuff is mediocre at best. At best, his career will be that of a backend of the rotation lefty who is considered an "innings eater." Funny thing about "innings eaters" is that they all suck.

Truer words can't be said. It's mentioned by the FO time and time and time again. We want to build a roster to protect Stanton. Considering Stanton is far from consistent this is really hard to do. That being said.... it's more than a long shot to assume one player is going to give you 100+ wins. In reality our offense has been great this year. Aside from a few hiccups here and there, take last nights bases loaded for example. We consistently get 4+ runs per game. Which isn't bad at all.

I'm not worried about our inconsistencies this year, what worries me is that we have no depth at all. Look at our minor league system.. every team is in last place. With literally 0 potential aside from maybe Naylor.. End rant.

Yeah it is beginning to seem as if we are building a team around a Mark Trumbo, Chris Davis type player rather than a true superstar. I'm still holding hope that he is just an exception to most rules and is an anomaly with his volatile streaks and terribly and I mean terribly ugly swings. To me, the mental side of the game just isn't there offensively. And that's the part that scares me the most. Before I get roasted for saying that, just think that Bryce Harper hit a 3-2 curveball that was outer half out against one of our best RP in a huge moment. How? Because he knows there's no shot in hell hes getting a fastball right there.  All I could picture was Stanton with a mammoth swing a miss, basically looking at the 3rd base dugout and spun completely around.

End rant.

"Stuff" doesn't get people out. Good pitches do. Good pitchers make good pitches. Plain and simple. Ask Matt Lindstrom

Yeah, pitching is pretty important.

Our #4 sucks. Our #5 sucks. And while I like Chen and Conley, they're not exactly lights out so they're prone to some bad starts too. Our bullpen should be better the rest of the way by default just by not having Breslow, Narveson, Ege, etc., etc. on the roster. Although we always have a couple of losers in our pen who, for whatever reason, end up deciding games.

As for our lineup, it's pretty good, but it's also not as great as everyone thinks.

We have a .500 roster right now. Which isn't terrible, but it does mean we would need to improve at the trade deadline. Stanton is one of the good pieces on the roster, not one of the bad ones. That's all I'm saying.

I don't get this logic.

Stuff definitely plays a significant part. Not sure how you can say otherwise.

Yes, but Stanton does need to get more consistent and soon. I mean how times has he had the chance to tie or win the game and makes an out?

How many times has he helped us win a game?

Stanton has the capability and needs to be better its that simple. Too many games come and go where his swings are actually laughable. He just isn't one of those guys where its like shit we know he's not going to swing at garbage so we either throw him a strike or he walks. The entire league knows there are plenty of ways to get him out. They dont think that about Bryce Harper.

For what it's worth, Yelich hasn't been good with .RISP either.

It's been a team issue.

Nicolino was good in milb cause he nibbled and got a lot more strikes because the zone is bigger down there and hitters more free swinging. He's struggling because the zone is smaller in MLB and he doesn't have a single swing and miss pitch (stuff) and an absolutely terrible fastball. I'm not sure how he can really improve from here as he had nothing plus to work with. His big perceived strength was control which so far isn't translating to the MLB.

The problem with this team is pitching and pitching depth.   The lineup is above avg and doing it's job this year. We have no chance of competing with our current pitching set up

What do you mean? Arrieta was terrible when he was with the Orioles.. I think he had an average 5.00 ERA.. He even said in an interview he contemplated retiring after just playing for 3 years cause of how bad he was.
