May 27, 201610 yr Jeffrey Loria is only a horrible owner if you're a Marlins/baseball fan/decent human being. From a business standpoint I'd venture to say his profit margins are better than most pro sports franchise owners. Maybe, but I think there's a valid argument in saying that if Loria had run things differently the product on the field would have been more successful and would have generated more revenue in addition to more playoff experiences. As in, you have to think that even Loria himself is dismayed over the fact that he hasn't produced a playoff team.

Well said. He could be his shitty cheap ass self and still have brought us more winning seasons if he had done a few things differently.
May 27, 201610 yr Well said. He could be his shitty cheap ass self and still have brought us more winning seasons if he had done a few things differently. It was more about poor decisions and poor baseball people working under him. He did spend money for 2012 and we saw how that went. Not spending was often the issue but not always. Again, he's a terrible owner for a multitude of reasons.
May 27, 201610 yr Well, I've said it before and I'll say it again. A good owner in sports is hands off. This is not a normal business. An owner is not an expert at the business he owns (sports), so his best mode of operation is to stay out of the way. Hire the best people to handle your sports team and just don't interfere. The Giants won 3 titles in 5 years and nobody heard anything about their owners. The Cards won what, 2 in 4? And you don't hear anything about their owners. The Cubs are the hottest thing going, and nobody hears anything about their owners. Can most people name thosee owners quickly without having to at least think about it a little bit? Mean while, everybody knows Jerry Jones, everybody in hockey knows Edmonton Oilers owner, Katz. Everybody knows Snyder of the Redskins, everybody knows Loria. The good owners in sports are an invisible presence.
May 27, 201610 yr When the Marlins put tickets on Groupon, it was spread nationwide (worldwide maybe) by people mocking them. Since then, many teams including the Mets COMING OFF AN NL TITLE have done it and not a peep. The same thing would happen with this story in another market, it'd be ignored but because its the Marlins -- now a business is wrong for suing clients that walk away from contracts. The double standard is bad enough from others, hate to see it from fish fans too. I agree that there appears to be a double standard, but also the team mentioned isn't run the same. As previously stated the Marlins have a meddling owner or at the very least not a silent one, the firing/hiring of managers and the Dan Jennings "experiment", firing a Coach of the Year, quality or lack of experience of managers, the promises to players which then changes overnight (Reyes as mentioned and so many others who were only here a year but promised to be a long term team member), the stadium issues where ownership really did a number on the government entities, the "art" for home runs, the firing/mishandling of Tommy Hutton, the gutting of the team numerous times, the low, low payroll where the MLB "talked" to Loria about it, and the list goes on. And I'm not saying there aren't issues with the Mets you mentioned or any other team. Or that there isn't going to be complaints with different owner(s) or different managers or different front offices. It's just that the Marlins can't stay out of the headlines because time and time again something stupid happens that brings attention to us. I also believe there is a baseball following in South Florida. If there wasn't the tv viewership would be different. There appears to be a strong interest, well maybe strong is a little strong, but many watch, including me, but aren't willing to spend my hard earned dollars into lining Loria pockets. And look like a chump when the next thing happens to be displayed in the headlines. So for now I will continue to go to a few games when the itch to attend becomes too great. Otherwise at this point I will continue to be a lazy boy fan and post in this forum while the home game is played. And I will be talking to fans and not empty seats.

Again, he's a terrible owner for a multitude of reasons. He spent money stupidly just to say he spent money. The Bell signing was all on him afterall cause he is a fucking moron. Not spending money is why their farm system is fucking trash.
May 27, 201610 yr Atlanta was having problems selling out playoff games during their 14 year in a row division title era. That's a very compelling argument for Atlanta being worse than Miami. No team since 1993 has had a history like the Marlins. The extreme peaks and valleys. Right now kids that are 23 are the oldest living people who were not born in the pre-Marlin era. You have a brand new team. Two WS titles that gave the team momentum. But huge fire sales shortly after to make fans lose confidence and dedication to the team. We traded away our generations greatest hitter for scraps. It's an extremely unique situation so any gains in momentum attendance wise or ratings wise are positives it doesn't matter if our gains still rank us in the bottom of attendance. It'll take time to undo the damage caused by the 1998 fire sale and Lorias bullshit. Also doesn't help that the media and special interests openly turned the populace against the Marlins with lies about the new stadium costing billions to Miami taxpayers and ignoring all facts about hotel bed taxes. The Marlins can be a popular team with middle of the pack attendance with sustained success (I'm talking being competitive 7 out of 10 years at least). Loria has to go. And new ownership has to do with the panthers have done. Which by the way panthers had a fuck load of sell outs this year. before 2012 they hadn't had one since like 2004. Winning fills seats. Consistent winning builds a fan base.

May 27, 201610 yr As an aside I feel I've had this discussion with @el penguino about attendance a hundred times. It's one of those things neither of us will change our minds on. But I remember years ago we went back and forth regarding attendance at joe Robbie. Just Reminiscing
