The Orioles are about to announce that they have signed Guerrero *and* Ivan Rodriguez, according to Lee Sinins of the Baseball Sabermetric Encyclopedia.

Admin BEINFEST: I AM CALLING YOUR a** OUT RIGHT NOW! MAKE THIS MAN A GODDAMN "CREATIVE" OFFER ASAP! PLEASE!!!

dont worry

King-B must have something up his sleeve

Thank god! Let's hope they sign Pudge too and we can land Javy.

So I'm guessing your not a fan of Vlad? Plus theres no gurrantee the Marlins will sign Javy either. They say the Dodgers and Cubs are the front runners for Javy.

I'm an enormous fan of Vlad, have been for years. I just believe we cannot afford him and his signing would be disasterous financially for the Marlins.

Just one man's opinion and I realize I am in the minority here. You don't believe that getting Vlad could help us get a new stadium and secure our future because right now without a stadium we have no future past next year. We have to make a future and it starts now.

Well, none of the major sources of baseball news have said anything on the front of Vlad recently. So I guess we just have to sit and wait for the O's to sign Pudge to see what the deal with Vlad is.

Thinking about this, I think this is a hoax. How can the work on 3 (three) major deals at the same time? Do they have 3 GMs?

No problem.

I was just wondering why you didnt want Vlad.

I see your point on how that could financially constrict us. Especially when Burnett, Beckett, Cabs, Willis, and others are up for free agency and aribration. But thats still a couple years away and by then we would have ridden ourselves of Conine, Pierre, and other contracts.

IMO I'd still like to see Vladdy in a Marlins Uni. Lets just hope this report isnt true. :thumbup

It could be done, with a bit of creativity . . .

Rotowire's news I could find related:

Miguel Tejada - SS - Baltimore Orioles Dec 14

ESPN's Jim Bowden is reporting that the Orioles could have both Miguel Tejada and Ivan Rodriguez signed today.

Bowden said that the Tejada is leaning toward taking a five-year, $50 million offer from Baltimore over a four-year, $32 million contract from the Mariners. Of course, it's worth remembering that Bowden has been wrong about a lot of stuff the last two days.

And how could this have happened when they still have yet to meet face to face? Gentlemen and Ladies, I'm worried, but I think we can escape this one again.

Argh, I hope this isn't true.

We need EdCanes to chime in with some insider info or something and let us know if there is any kind of progress on the marlins side with Vlad.

Also, wasn't there some kind of report earlier today saying that Vlad's agent was feeling under the weather and negoiations would not go on today or something to that effect?

:\

Nothing to be worried about my dear lad.. Vlad turned down the first offer by the O's because he wants to play for the fish... Vlad is ours

I agree Juanky.

I mean they still havent meet in person and I think Vlad and his agent would do that before signing with any team.

Everyone is just overreacting. How many similiar reports have we gotten like this, many.

Thank god! Let's hope they sign Pudge too and we can land Javy.

I believe his contract would make it impossible for the team to come up with the missing $137 million they need to raise before March 15.

Our future is Cabrera, Beckett and Burnett. By the end of the 2005 season I believe Cabs will make everyone forget there ever was a Vlad G on the radar screen.

But again this is my opinion and I'm not trying to sell it to you or anyone else. In no way am I saying I'm right and you're wrong, it's just what I believe.

Thrifty no more, O's sign Tejada

By PHIL ROGERS

Chicago Tribune

NEW ORLEANS - During his undistinguished run as the Baltimore Orioles' de facto general manager, Syd Thrift had so little success recruiting free agents that he lamented it was "like we're offering Confederate money."

Times finally may be changing for one of baseball's saddest franchises.

"None of our (money) has been Confederate or has been considered Confederate," said Mike Flanagan, the longtime Baltimore pitcher who now runs the team with Jim Beattie.

The Orioles, of all teams, gave a pulse to the winter meetings Sunday. While much-discussed trades involving Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez and Nomar Garciaparra remained mired in financial quicksand, Baltimore signed free-agent shortstop Miguel Tejada to a six-year, $65 million contract, which may be only the start.

Flanagan hinted the Orioles are close to deals to sign two of the other top free agents, catcher Ivan Rodriguez and right fielder Vladimir Guerrero.

"I think this an important free-agent acquisition, with long-term impact," Flanagan said of the Tejada deal. "It's great for the franchise. We're tickled to death with it. We'll go back to the phones and continue (working) as long as it takes. ... At this point there's nobody out of the mix."

The Orioles, whom many expected to sign former Atlanta catcher Javy Lopez, took a U-turn toward Rodriguez over the weekend. They had not announced an agreement by Sunday night but could make the signing official Monday.

As hard as it is to believe, Guerrero might not be far behind either. The Orioles, who haven't finished higher than fourth place since 1997, had been committed to only left-hander Omar Daal beyond 2004.

That provided Flanagan and Beattie serious traction. Owner Peter Angelos, who underwrote the disastrous Albert Belle contract in 1998, decided it was time to take another plunge into deep water.

"I don't think we have any kind of limitations in this process," Flanagan said. "We have the flexibility, whereas in previous years we didn't have the flexibility."

Baltimore's dealings could affect both Chicago teams.

For the second year in a row, the Cubs had eyed Ivan Rodriguez without making a serious play to land him. Some in the Cubs organization had hoped the Orioles would sign Lopez, reducing Rodriguez's options and possibly his price tag, but it appears Rodriguez could get a package worth $30 million over three years.

That means it will be Lopez who remains on the Cubs' radar.

If he can approach the consistency he showed in 2003, when he hit .328 with 43 home runs, Lopez could be a force at Wrigley Field. But because of the presence of right-handed power hitters Sammy Sosa, Aramis Ramirez, Moises Alou and Derrek Lee, he is not as good a fit as Rodriguez. Rodriguez is a complete enough hitter to bat second in a lineup that needs help at the top.

Magglio Ordonez is among Baltimore's fall-back options behind Guerrero, who turned down a five-year, $70 million deal to remain in Montreal. It's hard to see how the Orioles have enough pitching to interest White Sox GM Ken Williams, but for the teams to even explore the possibility of a trade, Guerrero would have to sign elsewhere.

Florida emerged as a late bidder for Guerrero, but it appears Baltimore is the front-runner, if indeed Angelos is prepared to back up Flanagan's talk.

While the Orioles can hardly hope to seriously challenge the Yankees and Boston in 2004, Flanagan said he hopes these meetings will one day be remembered as a turning point for the franchise.

Baltimore was considered a model operation during the Earl Weaver era, when Hall of Famer Jim Palmer headlined a deep cast of pitchers, and again after moving into Camden Yards in 1992.

But the organization spiraled downward after Angelos purchased the franchise from Eli Jacobs. After GM Pat Gillick bolted, the talent base eroded as his successors failed to acquire or develop quality players.

Flanagan knows it will be a long climb back. But at least the Orioles have started.

"I've been in the American League East for a long time," he said, when asked about stranglehold of the Yankees and Red Sox. "It's a terrific division, in my estimation the best in baseball. There are specific challenges to being in the division. Their vision is a little shorter than ours. I like the way our long-term views shape up."

we'll have to wait 4 more minutes to see what 11 pm sportscenter has to say about this.

There is no 11PM sportscenter. There is Sunday Night Football. I guess it's after the game.
