Vlad related news (everything Baltimore related is now Vlad related, btw):

Executive vice president Jim Beattie said the biggest nugget to emerge from a eventful second day was a "pretty good" conversation with Scott Boras, the agent for free-agent catcher Ivan Rodriguez.

Beattie has made an offer to Lopez: a three-year deal worth nearly $20 million, according to club officials. Beattie had three meetings scheduled with agents on Saturday night, including Chuck Berry, the agent for Lopez, and Fernando Cuza and Diego Benz, the agents for Vladimir Guerrero and Miguel Tejada.

Katz added that the Orioles have expressed interest in Oakland outfielder Jose Guillen, who was not offered arbitration by the A's. Guillen would appear to be a right-field alternative in case the Orioles do not sign Montreal slugger Vladimir Guerrero.

"We have a Plan A," Beattie said. "We're approaching it that way, but we've also had conversations with other guys that are Plan B. You've got to figure out a way to put your club together. We need some catching and we need some bats."

More stuff:

Last winter, the Marlins came up with what owner Jeffrey Loria called "special money" to sign Pudge Rodriguez. There are continuing rumblings that this winter, they're trying to find more of that special money to make a serious run at Vladimir Guerrero. Florida also is talking to Texas about trading pitcher Mark Redman to the Rangers.

Jim Bowden on ESPN News just said he knows the Marlins are trying to get Vladimir Guerrero but he doesn't know how the Marlins can come up with $14-$17 million needed to sign him and that Vlad doesn't have the market people thought, meaning he might be signed for less...

from rotoworld today:

Javy Lopez - C - Atlanta Braves Dec 14

The Orioles are still talking to both Javy Lopez and Ivan Rodriguez and reportedly are moving closer to a deal with Lopez.

It's believed that Rodriguez, knowing he has no other big-time suitors if the O's pick Javy, has lowered his asking price. However, the Orioles may still prefer Lopez. Baltimore is also still talking to Vladimir Guerrero and Miguel Tejada, with Guerrero the much better bet to sign with the team. Since it looks like Gary Sheffield will end up in New York, it might not be long before a Guerrero deal gets done. Source: Baltimore Sun

that was before the tejada news came out zoid...

Check the major league baseball forum.

Signing Vlad even for some of the larger figures that are bouncing around is a good economic move for a simple reason: Thanks to back-to-back wins by relatively low-budget teams, the FA market is deflated more this year than it has been in several years, and probably more than it will be for some time to come. Even if we sign Vlad now for more than we can afford, a future trade (when his 15/year will look cheap) will net considerable profit. As always, buy low, sell high.

IMO it's more likely at this point that the O's go after Pudge or Javy, who are significantly cheaper than Vlad. This way they can concentrate on pitching.
