December 16, 200322 yr BTW, would anyone have a problem trading Conine in order to free up $3 million? I know he is Mr. Marlin but if it means benitez/ williamson and Vlad I say sayonara Mr. marlin. We do have Hee Seop Choi? I would. I like Conine on this team.

December 16, 200322 yr I second that. He is the closest thing we have to Marlin tradition. I hope we can see Conine retire as a Marlin, and his jersey be retired next to the two (more?) World Championship banners.

December 16, 200322 yr To free up some extra money, does anyone think of letting Almanza go? It'd be about 800,000 off the payroll, and maybe Loria would be more inclined to using his "special money"
December 16, 200322 yr He is 38. I don't want him anymore. who are we talking about? vlad no conine I don't see him being productive this year. But the man proved me wrong once . . .
December 16, 200322 yr He is 38. I don't want him anymore. Well thank god you aren't Beinfest! And the man stays!
December 16, 200322 yr He is 38. I don't want him anymore. Are you retarded? That 38 year-old man played his a** off in September and in the playoffs. That 38 year old man not only proved to everyone that he could still play LF, he played it at a high level and made a number of spectacular catches and of course THE THROW. That 38 year old man almost single handedly took down the Phillies in September, and he hit well over .300 in the playoffs. When a lot of people think of the marlins they think of Jeff Conine and I think that is great because he is one of the few really good people in the league these days. He's only got another 2 years left I would say which works out perfectly, just in time for Stokes.
December 16, 200322 yr What the hell? He may be 38, but he was good enough to make up for the loss of Lowell last season, and help deliver us a championship. He keeps himself in better shape than anyone on the team, and I didn't see him have too many durability concerns or even production drop-off last year. Hell, he was playing as good as anybody when the World Series ended. All the great franchises in baseball are more than a logo. Their names are attached to great players, great moments, stadiums, curses, whatever. We have the championships and that's pretty much it. Conine is the only player who can be identified with the Marlins. After being a big in the SoFla community, showcasing the teal to the world with an All-Star game MVP, and being a huge part of two World Series wins, he earned the title Mr. Marlin. He's worth what we're paying in production, and maybe twice as much in franchise value.

December 16, 200322 yr I'll agree, Conine stays. But, I do think some of you are exagerating on his production in September.
December 16, 200322 yr I'll agree, Conine stays. But, I do think some of you are exagerating on his production in September. If you think about it he was just coming from the AL and had to get used to NL pitching. He started hitting well when we played the Phillies and he never really looked back from there. I don't think anyone claimed that his bat in september was anything to write home about, but when the spotlight was squarely on us and the phillies for the wildcard he shined.

Conine deserves to retire a Marlin and have #19/18 retired as the first player number retired in Marlins history. If he gets traded that's it for a new stadium deal too. He and Lowell are the faces of this team, simple as that.
December 16, 200322 yr I have a big problem with trading Conine. I want him to retire in teal. He's the man. Did you see him single handily beat the Phillies down the stretch and make that catch against the wall in the playoffs? Conine is Mr. Marlin and we won't trade him!

He could be the first of many if we are able to keep the core of this team together. :mischief
