I agree, Yelich wasn't even half the player he is now, Staton was constantly injured, Fernandez was special and actually did put fans in the seats because he WON 70% of his starts. Moreover, his whole premise is flawed, assuming that superstars are seat fillers. Culture builds a fan base, not individual achievements. I really respect Jeter for staying true to his complete rebuild conviction, while receiving so much backlash from mainstream. He hasn't budged to it and that's something Loria could not do if he was in the same position.
June 28, 20197 yr Yeah, Fernandez actually DID increase viewership and attendance from what I recall...unfortunately he only pitched 1 out of 5 days and was out for a period of time with Tommy John surgery. It was a good bet when he pitched we would win, and not only that, but it was a good bet that when he would pitch it would just feel good (he had a special excitement to him you don't see in many pitchers that just made him FUN to watch). And now I'm sad again. ? EDIT: And for some reason, as I type this and scroll up, the algorithms of this site believe I want to buy a motorboat.

His numbers were ridiculous his first year after TJ, I can't imagine what he would have become in his prime

Goes back to proving why the Marlins weren't as close to contention as people think.

June 29, 20197 yr the article is overall positive. it emphasizes how there is a lot of potential and value found from unusual places. I think its a fine fangraphs article about a bad team.
