The Marlins got taken to school by the best in the business, I would think the Marlins will complain to the league but I don't think there is much they'll do about it. Last year it Boston laughing at the Marlins, by taken Millar who had been place on waivers by the Marlins. The league did nothing then, and I don't believe they'll do anything now. The PTBNL might not be much, but it should be a gentleman's agreement in the end with Oakland signing the Redman. I all this could be for not, if it was agree regardless, if they signed Redman after or before the non-tender date. But if not its a screw-up by the Marlins

I would assume that the Marlins still get the PTBNL. The A's got a PTBNL(Damian Miller) in the Barrett deal, after Barrett was non-tendered then signed. I could be wrong, but I think that was a similar deal. The A's would have gotten cash if Barrett wasn't signed.

Frankly, the cash and PTBNL are both minor compared to the bullpen we need to put together and team we need to get ready for Spring

All Beinfest did was get rid of the weakest link.

Lee was our weakest infielder overall.

Encarnacion was our weakest outfielder overall.

Redman was our weakest starting pitcher overall. (yes he won 14, but he wears down in the second half)

Looper and Almanza sucked and weren't worth the money.

Pudge was being unreasonable.

 

I have no problem with all these moves. Think of it like improvement by subtraction. For example of this see 2002 deal that sent Preston and CJ to Colorado for JP.

i think what edcanes is implying is that Beane might have exploited a loophole in the deal. in other words, but both non-tendering Redman AND signing him to a contract, the A's may have gotten their cake and eaten it too, depending upon which of the cash\PTBNL was considered to be the bigger loss. I can't imagine, though, that there would be a case where the Marlins get neither.

 

i will say this - it does seem VERY convenient that they non-tendered him on Saturday and signed him on Sunday. I would say that it was probably not an accident. Whether Beane saved himself a PBTNL, or saved himself some cash, i think that the non-tendering was a purposeful act in order to make the Marlins deal work how he wanted it to.

For the life of me Ed I don't understand the crux of your post. The Fish were going to non-tender the guy (Redman) but got Neu and either another body or some pocket change. So they signed him after the tender deadline, what's the big deal?

simple; beene was trying to sign redman to 1 yr instead of going through arb. when red said no. then beane went withteh 3 yr deal so try and get him cheaper per yr.

Prediction- Redman wont last the whole year with the A's.

beane did work a little magic here....he clearly valued a prospect over small sum of cash. even the lowest-level prospect has a chance of becoming a major leaguer someday. cash is just cash. Beinfest made this deal thinking that Beane might not have the guts to non-tender Redman and put him out on the open market, but Beane called his bluff. But whatever - Beane took a chance when he non-tendered Red, so he deserves to reap the benefits. Unless of course he colluded with Red, but I don't know why Red would want to do him any favors.

Rumor is that it is Zito, not Redman that will be leaving the A's sometime this year.

If Billy was trying to mess us over, then i believe the Marlins should take it up with the league....Mark and Billy prob had a plan so that Billy wouldnt have to lose another PTBNL (he has 2 he has to send to Montreal and Chicago)...How odd that less than 24 hours later wham they came to terms....Hopefully, the terms were vague and meant if Mark Redman signs that we get a PTBNL
