February 18, 20213 yr where are the Padres supposedly getting their money from ? aren't they a small market team ?
February 18, 20213 yr I know this kid is great but hasn't he only completed like one season's worth of major league time? Seems a bit of a rush and a real risk. I don't know how I feel about this. If I'm a Padres fan I think I'm excited today but scared shitless that this might be a big problem for my team a few years from now.Â

This is commitment. I'm cheering for the Padres to succeed. I hope the Marlins are paying attention.Â

I mean, remember we signed Stanton to a mega deal too...... Â Â Â ---- Â I'm interested to see how it's structured, and if it's done similarly to Stanton's or if it's more evenly spread? Â I also just remembered they have Machado and his $300M deal...... Â 2021: Machado - $32M Myers - 22.5M Hosmer - 21M Darvish - 19M (it's 22, but Cubs are paying 3M of that) ----- 94.5M in just those 5 guys before this Tatis deal........ Â I'd have to imagine the Tatis one is backloaded to help them out with some of these other deals. Â Â Who backed up the Brinks truck at Petco? Edited February 18, 20213 yr by rmc523

February 18, 20213 yr Padres will end it up as the Phillies did, mega deals to position players and no pitching

February 18, 20213 yr So do the Marlins have to think about doing deals like this sooner than later? Maybe not this big but a long extension for their younger stars like Sixto?

We ask Loria the same question when he gives Stanton the 13/325, he says just don't worry because always got the stupid teams to eat that contract. Edited February 19, 20213 yr by taiwanmarlin

This isn't the same. Loria back loaded the deal with no intention of keeping Stanton long term. That's no what the Padres are doing.  At least I hope not. I'm not big on going all out on Free Agency. Keeping your young core players under contract through their prime years is where the money should be spent.Â
February 19, 20213 yr The contract itself is fine... they're guaranteeing they keep Tatis for 14 years at a reasonable and pre determined price because imagine what teams would have to pay him if he were to hit free agency, this is basically a savings for the Padres believe it or not. They're essentially getting him at a discount. I'm just saying they better hope this guy doesn't fall off the face of the Earth.

Keeping your young core players under contract through their prime years is where the money should be spent.  I haven't seen anything on the breakdown of the contract.  But with the other hefty contracts they have on the books (which I pointed out above), I can't see how it doesn't start small and increase heavily as the contract goes on.
