Seriously, though, this is on both sides (obviously). 

MLB keeps putting forward these bizarre clear non-starter proposals, and so does the MLBPA (seemingly to a lesser extent).  I get that usually each side starts at the extreme and eventually meet in the middle, but it seems like each side here has gone way past extreme.

I blame Manfred.  He's been a terrible commissioner and is seemingly eager to jab at the MLBPA at any chance he can get.  Not saying the players are innocent here, but I feel like a lot more could have been done on both sides to avoid this.

Remember folks, Rob Manfred isnt here in the best interest of baseball, but in the best interest of owners.

The gap between revenues and salaries hasnt been a large as it has since the dawn of free agency.

Owners manipulate service time, manipulate salaries and are fucking greedy fucking bastards.

Why would the players give up on both arbitration and free agency time lines, thats just fucking stupid and exactly what these fucking greedy bastards want.

Remember it is the owners who already sold an expanded round of playoffs to ESPN and offered universal DH in return for all this extra revenue to them!  How nice of them!

Jeff Passan of ESPN wrote earlier this week the MLBPA is hoping for players to reach free agency after six years of service or after five years of service and 29.5 years of age, whichever comes first. The Athletic reported in August they were also seeking arbitration eligibility arising after two seasons. The former ask would be an unprecedented development; since the 1975 abolition of the reserve clause, every collective bargaining agreement has set a six-year service threshold for free agency qualification. There is some precedent for the latter proposal, though. Between 1973 and 1987, players only needed two years of service to reach arbitration.

The league, unsurprisingly, hasn’t been keen on either idea. Over the summer, MLB proposed scrapping service time considerations altogether and making players first eligible for free agency at 29.5 years old. That was an obvious non-starter for the MLBPA.

Let me summarize it all for you people:

Owners - we want to pay as little as possible and make as much as possible.

Players - we want more of the revenue pie since revenues continue to go up.

 

What's probably going to be the bad PR is owners crying poverty when teams are sold for record numbers EVERY TIME teams are sold basically.

Hard to cry poverty when this is happening honestly.

The second option is probably closer to realistic, but honestly, I kinda prefer these negotiations all being behind closed doors. This whole "leak stuff to the media and make the other side look bad" tactic has been really irritating.

They (and this one is truly both sides) could have all easily said, "we are working towards an agreement, we're just trying to find a solid middle ground here and we're confident it will happen well in time for Spring Training."

Almost guaranteed they would have had an agreement by now if they kept everything civil in the public perception. But they had to throw mud everywhere and here we are.

Owners have been acting like assholes for a good 3 years now, complete and total assholes.

Maybe if they had been having good faith talks we wouldnt have gotten here, but....

Look at the economics of the sport.

The fault at this point is something like 80% ownership, 20% players.

Being generous toward the owners.
