It’s crazy how you see more and more young rookie and 2nd/3rd year players getting these huge and sometimes record breaking contracts just based solely on potential.

I mean, Julio Rodriguez does have potential to be great, but also has potential to turn out to be an average run of the mill player. I would wait a couple of seasons before shelling out that type of contract.

I remember back when A Rod signed that 10 year 252 Million contract with the Rangers in 2000, that was a mind boggling number to a lot of people. But at the time that was prime A-Rod who had proved himself and been playing in the majors since the mid 90s.

I mean it’s great for the really good players, they can get those giant contracts early on in their careers, but to me it makes more sense for a team to wait and see if the player can perform consistently for at least 2+ seasons before shelling out that type of contract.

what a fascinating deal by the Mariners.

 

Should be a fun model for young superstars going forward.

 

Lock them in for x dollars and give them a chance to earn so much more if they are as good as you'd hope.
