I mean they kinda knew what they were getting in Contreras.

Its really the front office first as the problem, the coaches second cause they are clueless, and then the pitchers as the most significant people to blame.

Contreras is exactly what he has always been behind the plate.

Honest question. Is his defense really that bad? Or are the metrics bad?

Sometimes the metrics are bad but it's not apparent to the eye test.  Unlike Alfaro for instance.  You didn't need metrics to see how bad he was.

He isnt that great of a game caller or a game manager.  His 'metrics' are ok.  They always have been.

Its more of his ability or inability to effectively manage a pitching staff which you cant really see on paper.  Its largely why the Cubs started to throw him at DH more, its why he had really a limited market in free agency, its why no contending team really wanted to trade for him.
