Marlins to call pitches from dugout going forward

Featured Replies

They were doing it in the minors. They are using AI and algorithms to base what pitches they are going to call on. It's more analytics to try and give them an edge.

Seems like a solid approach as long as their AI is more advanced than the ones I've used.

The analytics they use has batted Otto Lopez in the heart of the lineup all season so I have my doubts.

Why not leverage the tech? I imagine it’s designed in part based on game theory kind of principles to optimally mix pitches and locations so at least opposing hitters can’t benefit much from informed guessing.

Hold on, so why not have a central pitchcom that comes from the dugout and goes to the catcher and pitcher so no one steals the signs?

I'm sure it's much more than a simple two-number code.

It may depend on count, it could be specific to a batter, it may change every pitch.

This is used a lot in college and I don't think anyone's really picked up on anything yet.

So Marlins pitchers and catchers don't have to think anymore? How is that better for them? Is this on literally every pitch or only in key situations?

They still have to execute.

Honestly I'm with it - take the mental burden off the pitcher and catcher, let them focus on doing their job.

If this ends up going well, other teams will do it, too.

Well, good little statistical experiment to compare the pitchers’ outings before and after the games where this was implemented

We may need more than ... what would this be, 10 games tops?

Oh for sure lol I meant it literally from here on out since they say it’ll will be for “the rest of the season and moving forward” which I assume means it’ll carry on into next season barring a catastrophic failure.
