Remaining Free Agents

Featured Replies

Of the remaining free agents, two I think could be a good fit here:

Scott Sauerbeck

Raul Mondesi

Sauerbeck is the best lefty reliever out there now. He had a 2.30 ERA in 2002 with the Pirates and has made 70+ appearances in each of the last 4 years. He only had 27 BB in 2002 and that seems to be the key to his success. Rumor is he wants to sign with Cincy, since that is where is from. Can rack up K's though and would be a great addition to our pen. Lefties batted .192 against him...

Mondesi will only be turning 33 this year. He hit .302 in the NL last year (162/49) with 8HRs. Even had 5 SBs. He has a rocket arm and solid D. Could be a great addition to our bench, get some platoon time with Conine/Choi - may be a 3 headed monster there. This would mean we wouldnt overly depend on Conine or Choi - who both can get it done. I would like to see Choi worked in easily. Besides, you could put Mondesi and Conine in the OF and give Lowell a break at 3B with Cabs there. It all depends on how much Mondesi would take - if under $2M, I say make the deal. One year, of course - ensures 'payroll flexibility'.

Another interesting player is Damian Moss. I know, I know a 5.16 ERA combined last year. But he had a 4.70 in NL (20GS with 115IP). And yes, his 57K/63BB (in NL) are not impressive. In fact, even though he had a 3.20 ERA in 2002, his WHIP was insane as he had 89BB and 140H with 111K. He was 12-6 though with that Braves team. But he is young, 27, and seems to have the tools to be a solid #5 until Burnett comes back and then could make an interesting transition to the bullpen. He is a lefty, and we need lefties. Lefties batted .342 against him last season though. But I cant help but be attracted to a former Brave prospect who is only 27. If he can keep his BB down, and get better control, he may blossom. And he wont do much damage to the pocket book.

gimme Moss

i dont want Mondesi and i think Saurkraut wants to play in Cincy

I'll take el duque or moss, mondesi, and saurbeck

I'd say we'd be lucky to get 1 of those players you listed, let alone three.

Eric Karros. Should come cheap and would be a perfect backup to choi who can play when we face lefties.

I don't know about Moss, he was terrible with the Orioles last year.

Of course I'm really hoping we make a strong push for Sauerbeck.

AHH!!! It's Dusty Baker! Don't listen to him Beinfest!

Mondsi, we could use another 25 homers in our line up

who is going to give us 25 more homers?

Lowell on steroids?

Because it's definetly not raul mondesi

Wow I didn't even think Karros stats were this good against lefties last year.

By Breakdown AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS

vs. Left 112 17 41 9 1 3 10 15 0 11 1 1 .366 .441 .545 .986

He hit .366 with a .441 OBP against lefties. WOW! :wow

Those stats don't lie, but I'd like someone who could play the outfield so we can give Pierre, Miggy and Lowell a breather.

You have to remember though we have a big luxury in this situation because both Cabs and Conine are very versatile. Conine can play OF/1B/3B and Cabs can play SS/3B/OF so that should make giving somebody a rest easier.
