Pudge offered 4/40

Featured Replies

DETROIT -- Ivan Rodriguez has been offered a $40 million, four-year contract by the Detroit Tigers, a baseball source told The Associated Press on Friday.

The 10-time All-Star catcher and his agent, Scott Boras, were in Detroit on Thursday.

Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said earlier this week the team is interested in Rodriguez, but has declined to elaborate much on his discussions with Boras.

"We continue to explore the situation," Dombrowski said Friday, before flying to the Chicago area for his father's birthday. "I don't expect anything imminently."

The Chicago Cubs and Baltimore Orioles also have expressed interest in Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, MVP of the NL championship series, had a $10 million, one-year deal with the Florida Marlins last season and helped them win the World Series. He asked for a $40 million, four-year contract from Florida, which broke off talks Dec. 7 by refusing to offer salary arbitration.

Detroit set an AL record with 119 losses last season -- one short of the modern major league record held by the 1962 New York Mets. The Tigers have been active in the free-agent market, but they have not signed an undisputed star such as Rodriguez.

Second baseman Fernando Vina and outfielder Rondell White agreed to $6 million, two-year deals.

At a lower level, Detroit also agreed to one-year contracts with right-hander Al Levine ($925,000) and catcher Mike DiFelice ($650,000) and to a minor league deal with third baseman Greg Norton, who would get a $600,000, one-year contract if he is added to the roster.

DiFelice was signed to back up Brandon Inge, a solid catcher defensively, who hit .203 with eight home runs in 104 games.

I hope Pudge enjoys his lonely losing nights...maybe that money will make him feel less lonely. :lol

Let us see how long it takes for Pudge to realize the feeling of being out of contention on May 1st.

But he'll be getting his money, right?

All I have to say is that despite everyone Bashing Boras,

He was right all along...

agree. if true, time to eat some crow

I guess conrats on the money oudge. It better buy you enough happiness to last those miserable days in detroit.

Detroit picked up White and Levine too. They had a decent off season.

it would be, but still we will know that pudge really is all about the money still.

Well it wasnt really Boras that got Tigers to overpay him... Tigers FO said it them self, "We are willing to overpay anyplayer, to bring superstar over here and try and get back to the winning side again."

BTW: Congrats Ivan Greedy Rodriguez hope you learn how to lose more then when you were with the Rangers.. But hey you got your $$? So i guess you shouldnt be mad.

Wow, you all sound like fans that feel betrayed. Wasteland in Detroit? Sure, we may not have the talent to win the World Series this year, but we do now have a solid team with the signings of White, Vina, Pudge, Johnson and the trade for Guillen. And considering that we will be losing 12 million off of next years salaries, and another 20 million the year after that, and the fact that we are only at 60 right now leads me to believe that we are sitting in better shape long term than you all are. I wish I had a tissue for you all. :hat

I wouldn't diss the tiger fans, they can only get better. The marlins are going to have a hard time repeating 2003.

But the Yankees will not, they will lose again

Just a quick question for you all. I have noticed how some of you all are mocking Pudge and say he is only interested in money and yet that is how you won the world series in the 90's is by buying players. And then the next year you got rid of them all. Kind of hypocritical to dis Pudge and then yet take pride in winning that World Series in the 90's.

How high were the Mets, Phillies and Yankees payroll last season? Big payroll does not equal success, so while the Marlins did spend money in 97 they still earned the title.

Thanks Soriano. We all here in Detroit realize that we have a tough road ahead of us, but Dave Dombrowski is doing a hell of a job to get us back to how we once were. People forget the Tigers were the winningest team in the 80's. We have had a very bad stretch lately, but I can't understand how everyone feels that their organization is better than ours. We are finally getting rid of VERY BAD contracts, and we are turning that money into free agents. Our team salary is no more than it was last year, yet we have upgraded LF, ss, 2b and C. 50 percent of the position players! I think we will be ok. We may only win 70-75 games, but I think that is better than 43. :banghead

Reason they dismantled the team in 1997-1998 was because Owner of the Miami Dolphins didnt care about baseball he justed wanted to win once and that it, samething he did with ur NHL team (Florida Panthers).

Just saying anyone that shuns Pudge, and yet praises that win is a hypocrite. Does that make more sense? I definitely am not dissing your title, and I am happy that you even won it again this year! I hate the Yankees with a passion. I was just trying to make a point with the people on here calling Pudge a money player is all.

Some people don't like the fact that he wouldn't take a paycut. It's just their opinions. Personally, I doubt if any of these people would turn down million of dollars just to play in a certain city.

Just a quick question for you all.? First off all, Reason they dismantled the team in 1997-1998 was because Owner of the Miami Dolphins didnt care about baseball he justed wanted to win once and that it, samething he did with ur NHL team (Florida Panthers) Hmmm...I am hoping that the other people in this forum are a bit more intelligent than that post you just wrote.

He wasnt the only reason we won, Juan Pierre, Miguel Cabrera, Jeff Conine, Derrek Lee, Mike Lowell, Juan Encaracnion, Josh Beckett, Dontrelle Willis, Luis Castillo, Alex Gonzalez.. they were reasons we won.

Your not to bright are ya. No hamster running in that cage of yours that you call a brain? We are talking about the 97 world series win. (I believe it was 97). For someone that claims he is so smart, and is slinging F bombs everywhere perhaps you should read these posts a bit more slowly so you can process all the information.

Have fun playing for the worst team in baseball in the worst town in baseball Mr. Rodriguez.....

but hey, at least you got that extra year and extra 2 million dollars a year, right?
