February 2, 200422 yr Marlins agree to terms with Wil Cordero Associated Press MIAMI - The Florida Marlins agreed to terms with reserve first baseman and outfielder Wil Cordero on a $600,000, one-year contract on Monday. Cordero, 32, still needs to pass a physical before the deal becomes final, something that could happen as early as Tuesday. His deal with the Marlins would also include the opportunity to earn up to $200,000 in performance bonuses. Marlins general manager Admin Beinfest said last week the team wants Cordero to provide veteran leadership off the bench and liked his right-handed power. He hit .278 in 130 games last season for Montreal with 16 home runs and 71 RBIs. Over his 12-year major league career, Cordero is a lifetime .276 hitter with 121 home runs and 558 RBIs. Cordero's acquisition would be another entry on a long list of offseason moves by the World Series champions, who chose not to sign catcher Ivan Rodriguez and closers Braden Looper and Ugueth Urbina, while trading away first baseman Derrek Lee, left-handed starter Mark Redman and outfielder Juan Encarnacion. The Marlins got first baseman Hee Seop Choi in the deal that sent Lee to the Cubs, and Cordero could provide an insurance policy if Choi does not progress as Florida hopes. They also signed Armando Benitez to replace Looper and Urbina, plus signed left-hander Darren Oliver to bolster their rotation c/o Miami Herald WOOOOO! :notworthy
February 2, 200422 yr Congrats to Admin Beinfest. For $600,000 it's a h*lluva pickup no matter how other things play out. Now let's hope he can dodge the bullet with his DUI arrest and it's not indicative of a drinking problem.
February 2, 200422 yr Wow, great move by Admin This guy is good and picks up whatever Encarnacion left behind for sure.
February 3, 200422 yr Biggest move of the off-season. ummmm NO Lowell? Castillo? You had to have known what I meant.
February 3, 200422 yr Even excluding re-signing players... I would rather have the option of being able to close out games with A Benitez.
February 3, 200422 yr Great news, now we have good depth at first. Now we can give Conine and Choi a rest and have Banks and Cordero play. Very smart move!
February 3, 200422 yr what a move great pick up for our ball club some nice right handded pop vetrano yes lets go fish...........................ya were back in 2004
February 3, 200422 yr Cordero can play all the OF positions, 1B, he player SS and 3B in his prime I believe too.
February 3, 200422 yr This is a super move by Beinfest. Gives us plenty of flexbility in case of injury to a starter. Much stronger off the bench than say, Fox, was last year. And for $600K.....perfect. :thumbup
February 3, 200422 yr Good pickup. Good insurance in case Choi falters and a good bat to have on the bench.
February 3, 200422 yr You just have to be so impressed by Admin Beinfest, Mike Hill and the others in the front office that keep coming up with these signings. First it was Benitez, then Oliver and now Cordero. While each has his shortcomings and his detractors the fact is each is a major league ballplayer with talent and experience. Say what you will about each but if you look back at our 25 man roster at the end of March 2003 compared today he has consistently, and affordably, upgraded this franchise. By my numbers payroll is at about $55 million (give or take and I'm not looking to get into a debate as to whether its $ 51 or $53 or $57 mil) when you make the final additions, pay Spooney and AJ. Pretty d*mn good job I say. Hat's off to you Admin!
February 3, 200422 yr very nice move! what an awesome bat to have on the bench for $600k. he's a nice utility OF/1B who could very well displace choi for a starting spot, or he could contribute in a 1B platoon. he's good enough to start and will provide great injury insurance for four different starters. our bench so far looks like this: 1. mordecai 2. redmond 3. banks 4. cordero/choi (one of them) and we get to let nunez, williams, easley, harris, and all the other invitees duke it out during spring training. at the very least, our bench shouldn't be worse than last year's.
February 3, 200422 yr OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhh Ya we finally got the big former expo we wanted.................................. oh wait a minute
