The blackout continues...

Featured Replies

Richard Fish (sports editor, rbush@herald.com) found room to cover the Orioles today but when it comes to the Florida Marlins not a single word, unless you want to count directions to Roger Dean Stadium.

With half the team already in South Florida, with tickets sales roaring and the deadline approaching on an new stadium, the Herald has decided to completely blackout coverage of the Fish. If there's going to be coverage at all of the Marlins it will probably come tomorrow, Saturday, when circulation and visibility are down, as has been their habit over at One Herald Sq.

There's no blackout in Tampa Bay or Dallas or Cincinnati, or any other ML city, just Miami. Shame on you Richard Bush, putting your loathesome agenda ahead of professionalism and true sports journalism tells us everything we need to know about you. You should be fired or if you are being forced to do this from upstairs, show some integrity and quit.

How the hell do they expect to keep the fan base going if the local newspaper doesn't give the Fish enough coverage? No wonder the rest of the country thinks we suck as fans.

Clearly the Herald has decided to not to help the Marlins sell so much as one ticket in 2004. They continue to do everything they can to kill off the Fish and any chances they have of building a new stadium.

This isn't being done by accident. This is premeditated.

I emailed Bush regarding the lack of Marlin coverage - please find his response below -

>Mr. Mal:

>Thanks for writing.

>With pitchers and catchers reporting on Saturday, our daily Marlins coverage

>will kick off in the Saturday Herald. You'll find daily coverage the rest of

>the way through spring training and throughout the season.

>Thanks again for writing, and for reading The Herald.

Seemed like a reasonable response. Let see how the coverage is from this point out.

I hope they do start coverage on Saturday. What im mad about is they havent had any offseason pieces on any players whereas the Dolphins get in the paper at least 2 - 3 times a week even in the off-season. Its like selling - if you dont advertise it people wont buy - they need to do a better job in covering the Fish.

Richard gives lip service...I want to see the special pullout the Sentinel puts in every year in the Herald. After all they do compete.

The News-Press already has Twins and Red Sox Info and had D-Ray info when they started, they should have Marlins stuff either Saturday or Sunday.

:D Maybe the HERALD could make up for the lapses by buying some advertising space at PPS. Say, a small but VERY expensive advertisment somewhere that Marlins fans can't see it.

Didn't I tell you that?

BTW, today was the first official day of the O's camp just up the road from the Herald.

BTW, today was the first official day of the O's camp just up the road from the Herald. Yea, I bet the HERALD will have more coverage on THEIR spring training then the Marlins. Probably mention Javy Lopez and how the fish failed 2 sign him :thumbdown

I still dont see it, and believe me, I am not hesitant to claim that the media in S. Fl. is conspiring against the Marlins. It seems that this organization needs to have lobbyists of its own to push the media to cover them. Perhaps Loria is not resorting to such tactics and is willing to go about this the old fashioned way - by word of mouth. Besides, I think this will grow a more resilient fan base, not one so fickle as to be susceptible to media coverage and opinion. Or at least, that is my positive take on this.

But here IS something embarassing. Check out who the Herald online has listed under the Marlins' roster:

Marlins 2004 roster?

Quite possibly, due to lower circulation, the thinking may be that postponing the Marlin Spring Training preview until the weeked would help them sell more papers too. This is a business after all...

Its Saturday February 21st.....Sun sentinel has 1 article on the marlins. Havent checked the herald...but im pretty sure theres no article

Theres an article in the Herald on McKeon and the opening of ST. Calm down, everyone, the amount of complaining around here is ridiculous, and ST is only in its first day.

Check out the roster for the Orioles. It hasn't been updated either.

yea but the herald shouldnt be worried about the O's maybe they should atleast update the Marlins scince, you know, its called the MIAMI Herald!!

It seems the Herald uses another party to list their rosters - some sports info source.

And yes, 1 article is better than NO article. I dont see a conspiracy here, but I would be shocked if there was one. I would like to see more Marlins coverage - and if there are enough people like me/us, then the Herald will HAVE to do so. So write to the Herald and voice your opinion.
