  2. Amanda absolutely killed all her chances of winning. She gave some awful responses to the jury.
  3. I'm recording it so my prediction is we'll see an Amanda-Todd-Courtney final three, with Amanda winning the mil.
  4. Not ready/in the mood to type up a decent review yet but did anyone who read the book and saw the film like the movie better? It has no bearing in how I viewed the movie, but I thought the book was much better. The Coens' cut out a large part of the book that actually was my favorite part in the film and a part I was really looking forward to. » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « You mean Carla Jean's death? I can't think of anything else that was left out at the moment. I like them both just about the same. I thought the Coens came very close to the source material.

  7. My reaction to The Great Debaters was :o , followed by :plain. It looks like it will be this year's Pursuit of Happyness, which I didn't like at all. I cringe every time I hear someone say that that's the most inspirational movie they've ever watched. I will watch it, though. I like underdog stories and I'm always intrigued by movies that tackle race relations (especially in that era, late thirties I believe).

  9. Nominations are out. I'll post it once I find a full list. Some surprises: Seven films got nominations for the Best Picture - Drama category. :o The TV nominations are a big ? for me. No nomination for Jack Nicholson. The guy has 19 GG nominations in total. Into the Wild only received a nomination for Best Song.

Diablo Cody (the writer) might very well be the frontrunner for best original screenplay. She's led a very interesting life to say the least. This clip was when she was on Letterman promoting her stripper book about a year ago. She's very funny in it. I especially like her last line that went something like this, "If this writing gig doesn't work out, I'm going back on the pole."
  11. Not here to debate the merits of the film itself, but I think there is a good chance American Gangster will be snubbed for best drama. It failed to get a Satellite nomination and did not cut the NBR top ten list of studio films. That could very possibly happen but I think the film's box office total alone will keep it in the running.
  12. "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" is also a dark horse. I really need to see this. Marisa Tomei and director Sidney Lumet might get a nod.
  13. My favorite female performance (so far) this year was Tilda Swinton's performance in Michael Clayton. I reluctantly had to leave her off. :crying I also think Travolta is going to sneak in there for Hairspray. By the way, Golden Globes can have up to six nominees per category.
  14. You can make a strong argument that Bardem's character is a lead in the film. His placement in the supporting category is strictly studio politics. If all three are placed in the same category, two of them will have their chances of a nomination zapped. Plus, no matter how great all the performances were in the movie, Javier Bardem's performance as Anton Chigurh is the most critically lauded of the year (unless you're penguino). EDIT: Woah, I totally forgot TV predictions.
  15. Nominations will be telecast on NBC and E! tomorrow morning (circa 8AM). My predictions: Best Motion Picture - Drama American Gangster Atonement Michael Clayton No Country For Old Men There Will Be Blood Best Motion Picture - Comedy/Musical Charlie Wilson's War Hairspray Juno Lars and the Real Girl Sweeney Todd Best Actor - Drama George Clooney in Michael Clayton Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood Denzel Washington in American Gangster Frank Langella in Starting Out in the Evening Viggo Mortensen in Eastern Promises Best Actor - Comedy/Musical Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd Ryan Gosling in Lars and the Real Girl Tom Hanks in Charlie Wilson's War Glen Hansard in Once Jack Nicholson in The Bucket List Best Actress - Drama Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth: The Golden Age Julie Christie in Away From Her Jodie Foster in The Brave One Angelina Jolie in A Mighty Heart Kiera Knightley in Atonement Best Actress - Comedy/Musical Amy Adams in Enchanted Helena Bonham Carter in Sweeney Todd Marion Cotillard in La Vie en Rose Laura Linney in The Savages Ellen Page in Juno Actor in a Supporting Role Casey Affleck in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford Javier Bardem in No Country For Old Men Hal Holbrook in Into the Wild Max Von Sydow in The Diving Bell & the Butterfly Tom Wilkinson in Michael Clayton Actress in a Supporting Role Cate Blanchett in I'm Not There Ruby Dee in American Gangster Kelly McDonald in No Country For Old Men Amy Ryan in Gone Baby Gone Vanessa Redgrave in Atonement Best Director Tim Burton - Sweeney Todd Joel and Ethan Coen - No Country For Old Men Julian Schnabel - The Diving Bell & The Butterfly Ridley Scott - American Gangster Joe Wright - Atonement Best Animated Film Ratatouille Persepolis The Simpsons Movie Best Foreign Film 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days The Diving Bell & The Butterfly The Kite Runner Lust, Caution The Orphanage
  16. So what's everyone's opinion of the title? Apparently it bothers a lot of people, but I like it. I'm glad they didn't go with some of the generic titles that had been rumored.
  17. You guys are turning this forum into the evil little step sister of the "Florida Marlins" forum. It's kind of hot.
  18. I have a hard time watching standard DVDs now after viewing stuff like Casino Royale in 1080p on my 63" set. I figured that.
  19. Don't buy DVDs anymore. Dumb investment unless you think you are going to have the SD format for over another year. My brother has a HD DVD players as well, but since I only have Blu-Ray and want to borrow two of those movies, I'm only getting him that. :lol How anal are you about picture quality? I've seen standard DVDs upconverted into higher definition and the quality is near to that of Blu-Ray Disc and HD DVD. Perhaps you're just a couple years ahead of us (in terms of mindframe and technology), but I have no intention of buying a high definition player any time soon. I will accept it as a gift though. :cool
  20. I'm pretty sure I labeled this thread with the movie's official title a long time ago. It must have been erased when the website had problems a few months back.
  21. That's not exactly the beating I meant. Unless you were doing something kinky. If it's the latter, this conversation ends here! (answer my PM btw)

I consider myself pretty cultured when it comes to watching a different variety of films. I just don't get Wes Anderson films. I want to like them, but I just can't. I don't know what's keeping me from liking them either. Perhaps it's the ultra controlled environment in all his films. There's just something that keeps me detached from every one of them. I'll give him one thing, I know when I'm watching a Wes Anderson film. I can't say that for the majority of directors of today. I'd like to know what fans of his work find so appealing about his films.
  23. A Guevara en Miami. Who knew? Damn you! I almost choked on the gum I was chewing. :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol
  24. My Sin City DVD 'broke' this morning. It's sad. But somehow I feel like I've accomplished something. :| I don't even like the movie that much. So what DVDs have you given a beating too?
  25. I think the Deliverance 35th Anniversary disc from Warner sets the precedent that it will be both. Expect an announcement by the end of September. 2 Disc SE Ultimate Edition Blu-Ray Disc HD DVD
