BBA places Coghlan 4th in their ROY voting
Sporting News Named JA HAPP their ROY Today... The Sporting News awards are based on the voting by the players. So the bloggers and players chose Happ. I have no doubt the baseball writers will do the wrong thing and go with Coghlan.

BBA places Coghlan 4th in their ROY voting
Chris Coghlan: 125 OPS+ Andrew McCutchen: 124 OPS+ Contrary to what the homers on this site are saying, the offensive numbers were just slightly better for Coghlan. Thus, the blogger does have a case. And to completely dismiss his case just shows ignorance. Yeah but Coghlan had more waaaaay more hits and everyone knows number of hits is the best stat to judge hitters. That's why Juan Pierre should have a couple of MVPs but was robbed.

The replays show that Alex was safe and Hunter was out. McCarver is bad.

2009 Postseason Discussion Thread
Looks like Arod has figured out how to hit in the post season, so far. That whole "A-Rod can't hit in the playoffs" thing is bulls***. He has hit in the postseason before. His postseason OPS is .900 over 182 PAs. I'll bet that .900 postseason OPS is better than 95% of other hitters with.

AL Central comes down to the final day
This has been a good race and I'm hoping for a playoff but I don't think either team will make it past the 1st round of the playoffs facing L.A. or N.Y.Y.. My money is on Detroit and Verlander over the White Soxs. This has been a horrible division. Yeah but it has been an interesting race within a bad division. Yeah, the drama on the last day is nice, but it sucks to know that the Marlins would've clinched today, had they played in the AL Central. I don't think we win 87 games playing in the AL.

Wiley and Fox Out
Weird that Fox got the boot because if you take Bonifacio out of the equation the infield was much better defensively even with Uggla taking a bit of a step back...However Defense was Fox department so he had to pay the price ...Baserunning is a bigger problem and Pressley is a major liability as well UZR/150 is wondering what you talking about. Our IF positions averaged a -1.1 in '08 and worsened to a -2.8 in '09. It was a -1.4 in '06 and -11.5 in '07.

Good moves.

Chris Coghlan shouldn't win the Rookie of the Year
Not so.. McCutchen and Jones have better offensive stats than Coghlan. Last time I looked at Jones (about a week ago) he had created over .180 runs per PA and that's waaaay better than Coghlan. Why would that matter if Coghlan is a leadoff hitter and Jones is in the cleanup/middle of the order which gives Jones more chances to drive in runs not including the solo homeruns he hit's with his power. In the Extrapolated Runs formula it doesn't matter whether a guy hits clean-up or lead-off. It's not about RBIs and runs scored. The formula is below: Extrapolated Runs = (.50 × 1B) + (.72 × 2B) + (1.04 × 3B) + (1.44 × HR) + (.34 × (HP+TBB−IBB)) + (.25 × IBB)+ (.18 × SB) + (−.32 × CS) + (−.090 × (AB − H − K)) + (−.098 x K)+ (−.37 × GIDP) + (.37 x SF) + (.04 × SH)

Chris Coghlan shouldn't win the Rookie of the Year
1.Everyone is throwing out Rasmus' and Coghlan's defense. Regardless of wether or not you think Coghlan is better than Rasmus this year, McCutchen is still clearly better. 2.Lol @ using Wins and Losses to judge a pitcher. 3.It's not about the number of at-bats, it's about the overall Effectiveness and/or value of the player. Is a higher number of at-bats going to help a player be more effective and/or valuable? Yes, but not necesarily. 3 is wrong. Number of at-bats matters. Sustaining success for 500+ AB's is far more impressive than 350-400 AB's. The fact that he has approximately 100 more AB's than most of these other candidates and he's not slowing down/hitting the "rookie wall" is something that can strengthen Coghlan's case for NL ROY, just as taking defense into account helps Rasmus. I'm not going to argue the rest b/c you actually provided statistics, and what you said about #2 is something I agree with, so whatever. Of course success over more at bats is more impressive than the same level of success over less at bats. The key in that statement, however, is the "level of success". And what does that mean? Coghlan has better offensive statistics than any other NL rookie, despite having far more opportunity for failure. Not so.. McCutchen and Jones have better offensive stats than Coghlan. Last time I looked at Jones (about a week ago) he had created over .180 runs per PA and that's waaaay better than Coghlan.

3.It's not about the number of at-bats, it's about the overall Effectiveness and/or value of the player. Is a higher number of at-bats going to help a player be more effective and/or valuable? Yes, but not necesarily. If Player "A" has a .900 OPS over 400 PAs and Player "B" has an .850 OPS over 650 PAs I would go with Player "B"... don't you agree? If PAs didn't matter then Jones should probably win it.

Chris Coghlan shouldn't win the Rookie of the Year
Most people that vote on the award base their on votes on idiotic things such as the number of hits a guy has (read the retarded article by Jayson Stark) and this helps Coghlan's chances. I looked a couple of days ago and McCutchen had created .153 runs per PA compared to Coghlan's .151 per PA (based on the extrapolated runs formula) and McCutchen is far better defensively but none of this matters as Coghlan has more hits and to retards this is all that matters. The one edge Coghlan has is that he ahs played a few more games and has more PAs. I'm beginning to think he'll win it but certainly wont deserve it. Happ should get it. My guess is Happ is probably about the 10th best pitcher this season and Coghlan is probably around the 40th best position player. This is so ridiculous. I also Believe that Happ should win the Cy Young but if you say that Coghlan is ranked around the 40th position player do you think McCuthen is better then him? If there was an Offensive player of the year it should go to Chris but just overall rookie of the year this season I'm gonna have to go with Happ and his great year with the Phillies. About the same as Coghlan. I think McCutchen has played better than Coghlan but Coghlan has played more games so that evens it out.

Capozzi: "Coaching Changes For The Marlins?"
The IF defense regressed from the the time he became the IF coach in '07. Some of them. Others like Hanley have improved. Maybe we just don't have good defensive players... Hanley has improved if his terrible (on defense) '07 year is ignored. I don't think it should be ignored. So we should just count '07 and totally ignore '08, and now the great improvements he's made this year in '09? I think we should look at all 3 years under Fox's coaching. I think people should be evaluated on the totality of their work rather than the picking and choosing which to years to look at.

The IF defense regressed from the the time he became the IF coach in '07. Who are you talking about, specifically? Especifically Uggla but it's the overall IF defense that has regressed. He deserves some blame along with Fredi for the '07 disaster in which we decided to cut back on defensive drills. The only IF starters that have being here since '06 are Uggla and Hanley. Uggla's UZR/150 in '06 was was 7.1 and is -6.1 for the '07 - '09 period. Hanley was UZR/150 in '06 was -6.0 and is -7.0 for the '07 - '09 period. So Uggla has regressed and Hanley has not improved.

Will CC win ROY?
1. Happ 2 & 3. McCutchen or Coghlan 4. Hanson Happ deserves it but media guys love guys like Coghlan even when they s*ck and he's pretty good so he has a good shot at winning it. But it would be ridiculous if he does.

College Football Thread - 2009 Week 4
I love the way he plays and the way he handles himself but I HATE the Canes. It's tough to like a guy in a team you hate but sometimes it happens. Beckett with the Red Sox is another case for me.

Bobby Cox to retire after 2010
Erick - I don't like our rotation at all. I think the Phillies and the current Braves are better. If you go position by position and the rotation between the the Marlins and Braves who would you pick? I would go with: C - McCann 1B - LaRoche 2B - Uggla 3B - Chipper SS - Hanley LF - Coghlan CF - McLouth RF - Ross / Diaz - Even SP - Jurrjens SP - Johnson SP - Vasquez SP - Hanson SP - Hudson

Bobby Cox to retire after 2010
The Braves with the addition of Hanson, McLouth, LaRoche and Church and the addition by subtraction of Francoeur and now with Hudson back are a playoff caliber team. Great. The same could be said for a lot of teams, including the Marlins. The Marlins with the addition of Nick Johnson and the subtraction of Bonifacio from the everyday lineup...along with the fact that they no longer have bums like Graham Taylor and John Koronka in the rotation as they did in May, can be considered "playoff caliber." At the end of the day, the Rockies are still the current wildcard leaders. The Braves are not. The current version of the Marlins are not a playoff caliber team.

College Football Thread - 2009 Week 4
damn this miami game is just plain ugly. I want to blame it on the weather or maybe hype going to their heads. Maybe the team is just young, who knows. Either way it is an ugly game. I still think though we have a good shot at having a good year and at the ACC title I'm glad Jacory Whipple is human afterall. Regarding how young the Canes are, 16 of 22 starters are juniors or seniors. I'm not sure but my guess is that's close to average. Great win for USF.

Our chances to make the playoffs
The second half we went 3-6 vs the Nats... had we gone 6-3 in those games we would be 2 games out.
