  1. baseball-reference has this stat measuring the percentage of times a baserunner takes the extra base on a single or a double. Bonifacio ranks 5th in the NL. He's 2nd excluding Colorado players who have a much easier time taking extra bases because there's so much ground to cover in Coors Field. These are the top 5 in the NL: Clint Barmes - 72% Ryan Spilborghs - 71% Dexter Fowler - 69% Chase Utley - 68% Emilio Bonifacio - 61% Pretty amazing to see Utley at 68%. The guy does everything well. The league average is 39%.

  3. Some people probably don't want to hear this but if you talk to enough people who have worked in the food preparation business and you will find that rat infestation is more prominent than you would imagine. In other words, this is probably not a problem you can peg entirely on Denny's. All of these places have dumpsters and rats love that. Sometimes they find their way inside. I'm not saying that this is something that you should just "deal with" but I don't think it's wise to right off an entire franchise because one local one in particular had problems. My first job was washing dishes in a relatively nice Japanese restaurant and obviously soap was never used and whenever I used hot water I would get reprimanded. Walmart and Target are underrated.
  4. I didn't say great platoon. What's so great about it? There's no way that this franchise would potentially go out and buy a bat(who can also defend) for a playoff run this year for say 1-2M, unless there's a place for this player. That's where Hermida comes in, or should I say, goes away. What's bad about the platoon? As long as Carroll can hold his end of the bargain (.700 OPS + big defense) vs Hermida's (.800 OPS + average defense), that's a good platoon. And, before OOTP comes in, I don't like UZR and think it's a bad measurement of outfield defense. I'll stick with +/-, which has him at 0 in RF this year. Is that average among "qualified" fielders or among fielders with at least the number of innings Jeremy has played? When you guys post these +/- numbers you should also post where that particular ranks among qualified fielders or among fielders with xxx number of innings.
  5. Fun fact: Coghlan's OPS is closer to Bonifacio's (.048 points) than it is Hermida's (.056 points) He also plays the most offensive demanding position out of the 3. Not calling for Coghlan's head but I just find it funny. He's incredibly overrated by fans. First Hutton and now Waltz have polluted people's minds about him.
  6. Church was pretty good before the concussions but not so good after them but even so it's a huge upgrade for the Braves by taking JF out of the lineup.
  7. I don't know what it is Toronto is looking for but I wonder if we could get Halladay with a package of Nolasco + Coghlan + one or two Prospects not named Stanton, Morrison or Dominguez. If the Phillies get him the chances of the divison pretty much go up in smoke and I doubt we get the WC. With Halladay I think we would be the favorites for the division and with a one-two of Halladay & JJ I like our chances in any short series. I say Nolasco not because I don't think he's any good but because removing his salary would soften the Halladay salary blow a bit. Roy Halladay is not going to improve this team's offense. And if there was such thing as negative percentage, I would assign this value to the chances of the Marlins getting Roy Halladay. The team can be improved by getting a big bat or a top of the rotation guy or both.

  9. Volstad, West and Miller all have pretty similar numbers. ERA === Volstad - 4.44 West - 4.47 Miller - 4.50 ERA+ ==== Volstad - 94 West - 94 Miller - 93 OPS Allowed ========= West - .728 Volstad - .746 Miller - .750 Since coming back Miller has a 4.04 ERA and has an OPS allowed of .728 OPS.
  10. I'm loving Brett Carroll... as I might have been the only one around here asking for him to get a chance early in the season when Maybin was stinkin' up the place. Great win for the team but I am starting to lose hope in Andrew Miller. Seriously. Yes, because one bad start means he sucks. It amazes me how you give up on young players so fast. You've given up on the 24yo Emilio Bonifacio. You can't have it both ways - that's just extremely stupid. In 5 years, Andrew Miller has the chance to be an all-star pitcher... in the same 5 years, Boner has the chance to be 29. On a more serious note, Bonifacio's track record has always been pretty unspectacular. Miller, in however limited minors experience (thanks Boras) has done (very) well. It's extremely unlikely to the point of aberration to expect a player to outperform their minor league numbers. That being said... 99% of the Boner Haters just want him out of the starting lineup and on the bench, not giving up on him as a MLer altogether... but heck, Amezaga isn't an everyday starter either. I really wonder what Miller's upside is. The reason he was top prospect is because of his mid to high 90s fastball but these days he rarely throws that hard and when he does he doesn't command it very well. This year the average velocity of his FB (per fangraphs) is 90.7 and that ranks him 59th out of 114 pitchers with 70+ innings.
  11. Pelosi killed the resolution to honor him. Good for her. First time ever I think I say that.
  12. "Fritanga" (maybe this only exists in Miami?) Gross. Boo you! There is nothing overrated about Nica food. (Full disclosure: I'm not Nicaraguan but my fiancee is.) Nica food is great but Fritangas are not. If you go to FIU give El Madrono a shot which is near by. For lunch for $8 (tip included) you get carne asada, gallo pinto, maduros, a salad and a canned soft drink.
  13. The thread is about Gaby but it went off on a Maybin tangent and that's who I was talking about. I think Gaby could SLG in the .425 to .450 range. I've thought he could potentially be a Wally Joiner type and Wally's SLG was .440. Of course we'll never find out because Bonifacio is really fast.
  14. Ryan Gosling looks like Hermida.. I don't know how to post pictures.
  15. Schnellders, thanks for at least being respectful. I have nothing against Maybin but the way he was hitting early in the year it was a wonder he lasted so long. I am certain he will be back before September and might even put up decent numbers so that bet would be useless. I would be willing to bet on his power numbers, though. So many figured he's someday be a 20+ HR guy. Where is the power? Power numbers are usually the last thing to come around. Have some patience. Once he has ML pitching figured out, namely that off speed stuff, the numbers will be there. He has the speed for doubles and triples, especially in our ball park. And those dingers will take care of themself. At NOLA he has that K rate down to once in almost every 6 ABs. Nice improvement. Don't know how that would translate at this level, but if he could come up and at the very least meet the team average he wouldn't hurt us. His GB% could hinder his ability to hit a decent amount of Hr's in the future. A GB% close to 60% is just as concerning as anything. Unless he improves his GB% to below 50% I see him as a .400 SLG guy and I don't take it for granted that he'll improve it. I'll believe it when I see it.
  16. I think offense is more of a need than bullpen and as disappointing as Hermida has being I doubt that if he's traded and we replace him internally that his replacement would out produce him.
  17. Worst job I ever had was as a barback. At the end of the shift I had to go from bartender to bartender asking for my share of the tips. I felt like I was begging for money. I hated it that part of the job and quit after a few days.
  18. Las Vegas The real Grand Canyon unless you have things to do once you get there - but overrated as a quick day trip I left one of your overrated places early to go to another. We were working in Phoenix for two weeks so over the weekend we decided to go to Vegas and were so unimpressed we moved the Sunday flight returning to Phoenix from the evening to the morning so we could go to the Grand Canyon. We had no idea how cold it got up there so we were wearing shorts and once we get up there it was snowing. I still liked the views.
  19. I would like another bat (mid 800s OPS or better) and / or a top of the rotation starter. Kevin Kouzmanoff of the .276 OBP wouldn't help much and Mark Teehan would help but not enough to make a difference and we don't need more bullpen arms.
  20. I hate umpires like that guy so much. First of the strike call on Manny was horrible and then to eject him he didn't even see what Manny did is ridiculous. He should be disciplined for both of these things but of course because of the f*cking union he can do whatever with no repercussions. 2nd highlight: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2009_07_07_lanmlb_nynmlb_1&mode=wrap
  21. Coghlan vs. LHP - .559 Bonifacio vs. RHP - .545 (As LH) I wonder what it would take to get Hammer back. You can put him in left and platoon Boni and Coghlan at 3B. You get about a .300 OPS upgrade with Hammer replacing those nasty splits.
  22. Unfortunately baseball-reference doesn't give you the split of the entire team all at once in the same screen or if it does I couldn't find it. Marlins vs RHP- .728 OPS Marlins vs LHP- .730 OPS Pretty sure he means player-by-player Yes.
  23. The guy reached down but I would like to see a frame by frame of the play. I think he may have reached down below the fence after he caught it. From the replay (no frame by frame) it looked to me like the ball could be in a trajectory to hit the top of the fence. It was certainly close enough for a review but for whatever reason Fredi didn't argue.
  24. Fredi should have argued the Cody double call and it should have gotten reviewed.
