Jeff Conine
Conine certainly has Tommy beat in the honesty department. We got two calls in the first two innings and he had no problems saying so.

Just an idea
What say you? I don't know why they would do this. If they want an expensive 2B they should keep Sanchez. They're kind of trading Uggla for Sanchez and Tucker for Capps and Pearce. Makes no sence for them to do this.

Grade the Marlins: 1st Half
Here's a brief report on what they said about the NL East on MLB Network: Phillies: B- "Starters must pitch better" Marlins: B "Who Will Close? Average all around. Incosistant Offense, power lacking. Brightest spot is starting pitching, Nolasco coming around." Do they not know who leads the division by 4 games?

Marlins not discussing long term deals with anyone
If I was JJ I would go through arbitration the next two years and wait for a CC Sabathia type deal after the 2011 season.

Hanley with runners on
baseball-reference has this stat measuring the percentage of baserunners that score when a guy is hitting. Hanley leads the NL with 22.8%. Last year he was horrible with only 11.0%. Supposedly he has talked about hitting with runners on with Tony Perez and the talks seem to have worked. Top 10 Hanley Ramirez - 22.8% Todd Helton - 22.5% Ryan Ludwick - 21.7% Albert Pujols - 21.2% Brad Hawpe - 20.8% Prince Fielder - 20.4% Brandon Phillips - 19.9% Yunel Escobar - 19.9% Raul Ibanez - 19.8% Jorge Cantu - 19.5%

I don't know at what age a guy would no longer be considered a "prospect" but 26 seems about right.

Who would you vote for in 2012?
If there was I missed that, although I generally avoid this board now because it's been taken over by a combination of libertarians, Birthers, and right wing conspiracy theorists. Who is the moderator on this board? FutureGM - What do you mean by this question? It seems to me you want posters censored simply because of their political beliefs. Am I wrong?

Obama's out of control spending / deficit
http://online.wsj.co...6648634011.html ============================ WASHINGTON -- The U.S. federal budget deficit broke through the $1 trillion mark in June, potentially complicating the Obama administration's efforts to revive the economy and enact its longer-term policy agenda. The U.S. Treasury Department on Monday said the government's annual deficit reached almost $1.1 trillion by the end of June, a once-unthinkable level that could threaten any nascent economic recovery by undermining the dollar and driving up interest rates. Surging deficits could also tie the administration's hands in responding to the economy's problems, by eroding support among voters and making Congress leery of adopting policies -- such as an overhaul of the health-care system -- that the administration believes are necessary for sustainable growth. It could be hard to win congressional approval for another round of fiscal stimulus, if that was seen as necessary, even as the economy continues to lag and the unemployment rate continues to rise, hitting 9.5% in June. Some budget experts questioned whether lawmakers had the political will to take steps -- such as tax increases and spending cuts -- to help get the deficit under control. "Most anybody who's being honest knows we've reached a point where we've got a very dangerous fiscal situation, and it won't fix itself," said Maya MacGuineas, president of the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. She said the White House and Congress should negotiate a broad plan to reduce deficits now. President Barack Obama on Monday stressed the importance of enacting health-care legislation as a way to bring down long-term deficits. A spokesman for the White House Office of Management and Budget, Kenneth Baer, termed health-care reform "the key to our fiscal future." But some budget watchdogs worry that Congress eventually could pass health-care legislation that relies on uncertain long-term savings, while substantially increasing short-term government expenditures. The Obama administration in May estimated that the annual deficit would hit about $1.84 trillion by the end of the fiscal year, an increase from February's projection of $1.75 trillion. The administration also slightly revised upward its deficit estimates for 2010 and 2011, to $1.26 trillion and $929 billion, respectively. Slumping tax receipts, particularly from corporations and individual investors, have contributed substantially to the widening gap, as has rising spending on social safety-net programs, economic-stimulus measures and aid to auto and financial companies. By historical standards, the 2009 deficit -- at 13% or more of the country's gross domestic product -- would be the U.S.'s biggest since the end of World War II in 1945, when it reached 21.5%. Some economists said the growing deficit hasn't had much impact on interest rates so far, despite a brief spike a few weeks ago. In part, that is because private-sector borrowing remains weak. Meanwhile, demand continues to be strong for the Treasury debt used to finance the government's deficit spending. "The private-sector retrenchment is allowing the Treasury to raise a lot of funds at very low interest rates," said Jan Hatzius, chief U.S. economist for Goldman Sachs & Co. "There's a lot of demand" for federal debt. Some economists also say the 2009 deficit doesn't appear to be deepening as rapidly as once feared. Still, high deficit projections, along with rising unemployment rates, appear to be starting to hurt Mr. Obama politically. Some lawmakers from both parties are expressing concern about the potential tab for a health-care overhaul, which could cost the government up to $1 trillion over the next decade if spending isn't offset by tax increases and savings. "This trillion-dollar deficit makes clear that our nation's fiscal situation is dire, yet Washington Democrats keep borrowing and spending money we don't have and forcing our children and grandchildren to foot the bill," House Minority Leader John Boehner said in a statement Monday. Some Democrats are also worried about the deficit, particularly the so-called Blue Dog moderates in the House. Rep. Charlie Melancon of Louisiana, the coalition's co-chairman, called for new budget restraints to be imposed on Congress. "Our budget deficits didn't appear overnight and won't magically go away tomorrow," he said in a statement. "The Blue Dogs are working with the President and leadership in Congress to reinstate" pay-as-you-go rules that would require Congress to come up with budget cuts to offset many new programs.

I don't see him doing .730 because he Ks too much, doesn't walk enough and doesn't hit the ball hard enough when he hits it. JP never walks but he doesn't K and hits a lot of line drives so he has being a .730 type in his career. I see Boni in the mid to high .600s at best. I think it's possible he gets down to the 16% range against RHP. He has a career MILB K% against RHP at 16%, LHP at 23%. Since June 9th he's struck out 17.4%. I know what he does as a whole shows the better picture but for a guy starting in the league improvement is improvement. I mean, 16% is still far from juan pierre level. But, I mean, you look at 600 ABs with a .330 BABIP. The difference between 20% and 16% is a .263 AVG and a .276 AVG. Actually he hits more line drives than I thought. He's at 21% and his career BABIP is .323 and that's relatively high. The Ks are what kill him. The difference between the .263 and the .276 is about .030 OPS points, right? If he gets the Ks down and keeps hitting line drives he could be useful.

Bonifacio has a zero chance of becoming a .730 OPS type. The fact that he's from .578 to .628 in less than a month disagrees. Just because a guy does something over a month doesn't mean he can do it over a full season or over his entire career.

Who would you vote for in 2012?
why is Limbaugh on the list? I was thinking the same thing, This Guy wants To make the rich richer, and create a middle class slave labour.. I find it interesting that you would assert that considering it is Obama taxes and out of control spending that will gut the middle class . If you double my electric bill , raise the price of gas , cause run away inflation (making it harder to get a home loan) , tax health care benefits provided by your employer it would seem Obama's schemes would hurt the middle class infinitely more than the rich . But I suppose the truth does not fit nicely into the created myth that Obama is for the middle class Did I say anything about Obama? I was talking about that Cigar smoking clown Limbaugh How is Rush against the middle class?

I have to think there is something fundamentally wrong with James' baserunning analysis if he comes out as above average on the bases. He has great speed, but his baserunning skills are below average as far as I'm concerned. Does James' baserunning/stolen base measures take into account the number of times a player gets picked off? Takes into account everything. I think you're underestimating his ability simply because of his (rather dumb) gaffes. I mean, just look at the original post of the thread. If he gets picked off, but also takes an extra 5 bases that a player doesn't normally take, that's +4 bases. But the pick off sticks out in your head because it's obvious. Is the calculation just that simple? I mean, getting picked off (-1) is much worse than not taking an extra base. If a guy gets 4 singles, takes 2 extra bases (on a follow-up basde hit or something) and gets picked off twice, can that guy possibly be given as much "credit" as a guy who hits 4 singles and just hangs out at first, without any extra bases or pickoffs? It does seem as if it'd be better to just have a man on first 4x. I guess "value" wise getting picked-off is like a CS and taking the extra base is like a SB. The value of CS is -0.32 and of a SB +0.18.

Congratulations to Beckett on his 100th career win
I'll be tough to get 250 wins. That's a lot with the five-man rotation and the increased use of the bullpen. The 250 wins now is the equivalent of maybe 350 in the old days. It would be pretty cool if Beckett, Burnett and Penny all get to 200. I would bet on Beckett making the HOF if he stays healthy.

Inge and Victorino win Final Vote
RBIs depend to a large extent on home runs and on how well a guy does with runners on base. I don't understand why people don't understand this.
