Logan Morrison out 2 months
Logan Morrison injured by craig on Apr 13, 2009 2:42 PM EDT in News 0 comments As HadMatter reported in yesterday's open thread, Logan Morrison is out for awhile. Just talked with Jim Fleming, who oversees scouting and player development for the Marlins, and he had some bad news on Logan Morrison. The Marlins' Double-A first baseman will miss 6-8 weeks after suffering a small fracture in his right wrist while in the field on Friday night. Morrison brought his glove hand, the right hand, into the baseline to fetch an errant throw and got it caught on the baserunner as he sped by. "We were hoping it was just a bruise, but the MRI showed it was an emulsion fracture," Fleming said. "It's not a big deal. It's in a splint right now and they're debating whether to cast it or not." While this isn't good news for Logan or anyone in the Marlins organization, I doubt that he would've been the first choice to replace Cantu should his injury merit DL time. I suspect the honor of being called up to play first would go to Gaby Sanchez. But whatever the case it is going rob Morrison of about a month of action. However the boy has the talent and will probably pick up where he left off. The question I have is why he is still playing first?

I'll give you a hint somebody hit .188 You realize Gaby Sanchez had an absolutely atrocious spring training right? You should not bring up ST stats when your hero was absolutely pathetic in that same time frame(Morrison also OPSd about 200 points higher than Sanchez this spring and was actually more productive than Gaby Sanchez despite getting 20 fewer at bats). time will prove you so wrong It hasnt so far. I don't Know I think you should go and see all he has done at the bottom of his page. I still think this guy is Gaby Sanchez. I mean, his totalitarian support is otherwise unexplainable. wrong ,are you Morrison ,you must be I'm a big fan Thats not a good retort, considering you are the only person on the planet who thinks Gaby Sanchez is a better prospect than Logan Morrison. It is impressive(and kind of silly) that you continuously go against the overwhelming consensus, but that doesnt change the simple facts that Logan Morrison is an elite prospect in all baseball and Gaby Sanchez is a mid-level prospect in the Marlins system only. time will prove you so wrong

He should be a starter in the majors next year and spend the entire year in A and AA. No need to rush him with Sanchez in the wings as a stop gap. Here's to a speedy recovery! Sanchez is not a stop gap if he does not move to the outfield he'll never see the majors. go look at what Sanchez is doing :lol Gaby Sanchez wishes he was half the prospect Logan Morrison is. He IS a stopgap in the Florida Marlins organization. Logan Morrison is trade bait only, one good year that's all :whistle put some facts then write Do you even think before you post? Give Sheffield a shot?
NO, THANK YOU! I wouldn't even spend the minimum on a 40yr old who hit .225 in 114 games, struck out 83 times, and has an OBP of .326. Why do that when you can probably get the same exact production out of Gaby Sanchez? Because whilst he has the same intials, Gaby Sanchez is not called "Gary Sheffield". The Tigers were AWFUL last year. That team didn't have HALF of the team chemistry the Marlins do. Look at all the good players on that team that had down years but could be productive in the right environment..... Sheffield, Renteria, Verlander, Zumaya, hell even Granderson didn't live up to expectations Sure he's past his prime but Gaby Sanchez isn't even in the same class as Sheff whether Sheff is 40 or 20. you'll have to rethink that in a few years

Gaby Sanchez & Dallas McPherson?
Gaby Sanchez is still a day or two away from returning to the active lineup as he continues to take it easy with his bruised left knee. He is still penciled in as the Marlins' starter at first, and no one with the Fish appears overly concerned at the moment, at least with his health that is. As for his work on the field, he is hitting only .200 without a single RBI in 30 AB. He needs to get going or he would obviously be in danger of losing some playing time at best, or at worst he could find himself returned to the minors to rediscover his lost stroke. Roto Times

Tank and Sanchez
Tank has options, he'll go to AAA no big deal. If they send Gaby down, like they should and carry a 4th outfielder, 3B won't be a problem with McPherson/Bonifacio taking RHP, and Helms LHP. They will be batting 8th so it's not like these are going to be primary guys that are carrying the lineup. McPherson will hack the right handers, Helms will hit lefties a little bit, and maybe EB forces some errors while bunting to get on base once in awhile. We'll get some production out of them. I'm not to worried about McDallas or Gaby's spring stats, they'll each hit a bit at some point. they don't need a 4th outfielder and you don't send a .305 MVP minor league life time hitter down, because you want to ,after 25 at bats hitting .160 .this kid will hit the sh*t out of the ball as he has for the last 4 years .Bonafacio & Andino can play outfield .and when Amezega comes back you have your 4th outfielder. I think both Gaby and McDallas make this team.Gaby as the 1B and McDallas as lefty of the bench . I mean, your bias is just comical at this point. I said, and it's bolded, I'm not worried about spring stats, yet this is your first line of defense for Gaby. Do you even read these posts, or do you immediately start bashing your keyboard with whatever as soon as you see the word "gaby." Second, Bonifacio, Andino, and Amezaga are not 4th outfielders. They should be the teams 5th (or 6th) option. The Marlins are going to need a guy with some pop off the bench to play as a 4th outfielder. Bench power is a very valuable, and necessary, thing. The Marlins are going to be screwed if their bench is 5 guys with under .400 slugging percentages. We'll have to pray the starting lineup gets it done everyday because the bench is only going to slap a few singles. Yea, maybe Carroll, or Miller, or whoever is not ideal, but it's a lot better than carrying pure slap hitters. Third, I do not agree with your wild belief that Gaby will become an all star MVP candidate, but I do think he could turn into a Sean Casey/James Loney type first baseman with a nice .290/.350/.450(ish) line and not embarrass himself at 1B defensively. I think that's a pretty good ball player, and a really nice player to have. What I want to do here is not purely performance related - I want him in NOLA for 10 weeks to start this season to delay his arbitration clock for a full year so we get to keep Gaby at a cheaper price for more years. This is really important to the Marlins if Gaby turns into half the player you think he will turn into. The difference between Gaby, and setting up a McDallas, Helms, and Bonifacio platoon at 3B and keeping an extra outfielder on the roster, is not so big where we NEED Gaby on this roster for performance issues. The Marlins are going to be OK with the other guys for the first part of the season. He'll get his chance this year. It's not going to be a big deal if it's this summer. It'll be a mistake if we carry him to start the year versus some sort of outfielder. you have your opinion and I think your wrong .I have my opinion and I think and right. you don't have a competitive team by platooning player last year Fredy did it because of lousy 1B defense. and not agree with me on Gaby MVP and so on .he did it in the minors every year.why wouldn't he do it in the majors.

Although, it's going to be tough for Fredi to make that lineup card, because you've got a lot of middle of the order guys in there. I would think McPherson would bat between 4th-6th, though. the reason you bat Gaby 8th is. you want to put your rookie were he will gain confidence. if you check Gaby has hit 4th in every level and by July Gaby will be hitting 5th or 6th on this team.

Hopefully this opens the door for Morrison to play 1B in June or July. is this the Morrison that's hitting 2 for 11 .182 and has 1 good year in the minor and has not play a season at AA :banghead

Morrison impressing Marlins
The more the front office talked up Sanchez, the more I bought it, despite the feeling in my gut. Now I'm thinking I need to trust my gut. I still think Gaby can have a real good career, but for right now, I really want to see McDallas at the hot corner. His bat is WAY too tempting to keep out of the lineup, and with him out there platooning with Helms we're only upgrading our D at third. Cantu should keep us idle in comparison to Sanchez at first. As of right now, Dallas is really putting himself into the starting lineup, and Gaby's sending himself to triple-A. On Morrison, the kid is absolutely scary good. Like I said Lou, I don't see him spending much time in the minor leagues beyond June/July. You really shouldn't trust our FO propoganda. When practically all of the trades we make are cost-cutting give aways (ie Willy and Olsen for a triple A IF and some minor leagye scrubs) you can't believe when they try and pass off trades as "baseball movies". Sanchez may end up being a decent player, but I'm not for one second going to believe that losing Jacobs and Hammer isn't gonna affect our offense because we have a guy like Sanchez waiting in the wings. The reality is that Gaby is going to emerge as average at his position in a best-case scenario and there's very little chance of that best case happening this year. Starting a guy like him at first is not a move that a team that should be moving towards contention should be doing. I agree and disagree. I do believe Sanchez can't be expected to replace Jacobs in the lineup. But I am not one bit worried about our offense, as I think despite losing all-or-nothing Jacobs and glassman Willingham we'll be equally as productive if not more. We're going to have a full season of Baker, McDallas should be easily as good as Jacobs offensively if he gets the hotcorner, Cantu should be just fine, Uggla and Hanley are stars, Hermida is looking mighty fine this spring, Ross should be extremely productive with 600+ ab's, and Maybin is looking like he might have a HanRam-esque rookie season. I'll be happy if Sanchez starts and is productive. I'll be glowing if they give the spot to a very deserving Dallas McPherson, who should improve us offensively and defensively with his presence. I think Gaby is just starting and will be MVP of this league as he was of AA and will bring the Marlins a gold glove too

Morrison impressing Marlins
Anyone notice the lack of Morrison sightings. The Marlins have seen all they wanted He hits lefties and righties Has significant power Hit's well in clutch situation. However it will be time soon for him to get some crawfish and gumbo, the Marlins do not wanna showcase him anymore, it would be too tempting, especially with Gabby struggling so badly. kid where are you getting your information from Morrison played today he is 0 for 6 in spring with 2K next time you see him will be in the back fields.also do your self a favor and check todays game and see Gaby struggling with 2 hits

A bad organizational review also. You had the top HR hitter in the minors, and then big bad Stanton in A ball, and you give the organizational hitter to freaking Raynor? Much sexier under the radar picks would be Kaminska or Correa starting to light up some strike outs, or Hickman figuring out to hit. 280, than fringe back up type players in a best case scenario. This is not my .It's Major League 2009 organizational review for the Marlins by Lisa Winston a very good baseball writer it's on the minor league web site.

Morrison impressing Marlins
anyone else starting to feel that Morrison is looking like the best guy out there at 1st base , not for the future but right now? He is going down to the minors but he is gonna make it tough to do for Fredi Marlins 2009 Organizational Review 03/04/09 8:54 AM EST Marlins well stocked throughout system Maybin, Sanchez on the brink of securing Major League jobs By Lisa Winston / MLB.com Gaby Sanchez is the favorite to win the Marlins first base job in Spring Training. (Jerry Hale/MLB.com) Marlins Headlines The future success of every Major League team lies in its Minor League system. With that in mind, each preseason, MLB.com takes a top-to-bottom look at all 30 organizations, from top prospects to recent Draft picks. What would the odds be on an all-Florida World Series in the not-too-distant future? They may be better than you think. Last year, the Tampa Bay Rays rode a team packed with young talent all the way to the Fall Classic. If a loaded farm system is the key ingredient to such surprising success, the intrastate rival Florida Marlins may not be too far behind. The Marlins made mincemeat of the theory that high payroll equals success as they went 84-77 in 2008, only 5 1/2 games out of the National League wild card slot. With a .525 winning percentage in the Minors, Florida finished seventh overall and is widely considered one of the most well-stocked systems in the game, boasting a well-balanced assortment of pitching and hitting, distributed up and down the ladder. The Marlins' young big league roster looks to get even younger this year as they could have several early candidates for Rookie of the Year honors. And that doesn't even count a pair of terrific young starters in recent first-round picks Chris Volstad and Ryan Tucker, who exhausted their rookie eligibility in 2008 (Tucker by one day of service time). If, as Marlins fans hope, that new stadium becomes a reality, look for it to host homegrown winning teams for years to come. Coming Soon Jose Ceda, RHP: The big flamethrower, acquired from the Cubs in the offseason deal for Kevin Gregg, projects as the club's closer down the road, thanks to a fastball in the high 90s and a hard slider. For now, working on refining his command and consistency, Ceda could still win a spot in the middle of the Marlins 'pen based on his pure stuff. Cameron Maybin, OF: Long regarded as one of the top up-and-comers in the Minors, this looks to be the year Maybin truly arrives. The 2005 first-rounder has all five tools and comes into the season as one of the early frontrunners for National League Rookie of the Year honors as the Marlins' likely starting center fielder. Gaby Sanchez, 1B: The catcher-turned-first baseman was selected out of Miami in the fourth round of the 2005 Draft and comes into camp as the guy to beat for the first base job. He has tremendous plate discipline to go with power and even some surprising speed (17 steals to go with 17 homers at Double-A Carolina last summer). Under the Radar Miguel Fermin, C: The Dominican-born Fermin made his stateside debut in 2008 at age 23 and, admittedly old for the short-season New York-Penn League, led the loop in nearly every category. He batted .347 with 17 homers, 47 RBIs and a .628 slugging percentage at Jamestown and already was regarded as a fine defensive catcher. With top catching prospect Kyle Skipworth likely slotted for Class A Greensboro, Fermin could jump to Jupiter. Ernesto Manzanillo, SS/3B: The 20-year-old from the Dominican Republic led the system in batting in the Gulf Coast League, hitting .352 with a .456 on-base percentage that ranked fourth in the Minors. The switch-hitter swings well from both sides and does the little things right. The Marlins expect to move him right to full-season Greensboro and see how he handles the challenge. Graham Taylor, LHP: The 2006 10th-round pick out of Miami (Ohio) is a workhorse who just keeps getting the job done. His 13 wins and 3.40 ERA between Advanced Class A Jupiter and Carolina led the system's full-season pitchers, while his 110 strikeouts ranked third. The southpaw, who tossed 174 innings in his full-season debut in 2007, has a deceptive, funky delivery with great command. Draft Top Picks 2008: Kyle Skipworth, C: The sixth overall pick out of high school in California, he was highly regarded for his overall package. The .208 average in 43 games in the Gulf Coast League is not indicative of his likely future output. The left-handed hitter, who just turned 19, added five homers and 21 RBIs. 2007: Matt Dominguez, 3B: Unlike so many young power-hitting third basemen, Dominguez is the real deal on defense as well as at the plate. The cannon-armed 19-year-old, drafted with the 12th overall pick out of high school in California, hit .296 with 18 homers and 70 RBIs at Greensboro, despite missing the first month with mono. 2006: Brett Sinkbeil, RHP: It was a disappointing campaign for Sinkbeil, who was taken 19th overall in 2006 out of Missouri State. After missing part of '07 with a sore arm while posting a respectable 3.42 ERA in 14 starts at Jupiter, he went 5-9 with a 5.02 ERA at Carolina, striking out only 66 while walking 51 in 143 1/3 innings. 2008 Draft Recap LHP Brad Hand (2), out of high school in Minnesota, has one of the best curveballs in the system and used it to limit opponents to a .211 average and post a 2.64 ERA between the Gulf Coast League and Jamestown in his debut. ... LHP Edgar Olmos (3), a lanky 6-foot-5 teen from California, made just one appearance in the Gulf Coast League but struck out five in 1 2/3 innings. ... OF Isaac Galloway (8) is a five-tool athlete who dropped in the Draft due to his apparent commitment to San Diego State. The 19-year-old hit .286 with 23 RBIs in the Gulf Coast League. ... LHP Dan Jennings (9), no relation to the Marlins' vice president of player personnel, struck out 62 batters over 58 2/3 innings in 13 starts at Jamestown. ... The Marlins are especially excited about RHP Blake Brewer (11), a 6-foot-5 19-year-old from Georgia who, like Galloway, slipped due to signability concerns. Brewer, whose brother, Brent, is an infield prospect in, yes, the Milwaukee system, posted a 2.16 ERA, 32 strikeouts and a .172 opponents' batting average over 25 innings in the Gulf Coast League. Predictions Hitter of the Year -- Many strong candidates, but we'll go with OF John Raynor. He's posted consistent MVP-type numbers at Greensboro and Carolina (over .300, 50-ish steals) and should rake even more in the Pacific Coast League. Pitcher of the Year -- LHP Sean West would love to join fellow 2005 first-rounders Chris Volstad and Ryan Tucker in the big leagues, but the Marlins don't have to rush him and probably would like to see a full healthy season from him. He's got the stuff and size to dominate. Notes of Note The Marlins made life a lot easier when they need to promote a player to the big leagues. They've halved the distance to their Triple-A affiliate, swapping Albuquerque for New Orleans, and moved their Double-A club from just outside Raleigh, N.C., to Jacksonville. ... One of the best "breakthrough" stories for 2008 will be on hold for the first half of 2009 after RHP Corey Madden underwent surgery for a slight labrum tear and is rehabbing at the complex in Jupiter. The only active player from Anchorage, Alaska, the 2006 21st-round pick was 6-0 with a 1.04 ERA between Greensboro and Jupiter last summer striking out 104 while walking 20 in 69 2/3 innings of relief. His 13.5 strikeouts per nine innings ranked fifth among all Minor League relievers. Quotable "We're heading in the right direction in a lot of ways, both on the field and off the field, for this organization. Obviously, we're not where we want to be yet, but I think we're progressing the right way." --Marlins director of player development Brian Chattin Lisa Winston is a reporter for MLB.com. This story was not subject to the approval of Major League Baseball or its clubs. Nothing on Morrison Hitter of the Year OF John Raynor I think they know something we don't Morrison will struggle in AA
