March 11, 200422 yr 03/10/2004 5:33 PM ET Notes: Bonds out with stiff back Nen pleased after throwing session By Rich Draper / MLB.com Ticket information Neifi Perez watches his flyball head for center field, where it fell in for a double. (Tom Hood/AP) SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The big man, Barry Bonds, was hurt, in pain Wednesday during batting practice, lying on the infield grass with his back stiff and aching. Alarmed, Giants trainer Barney Nugent and massage specialist Kevin Shananan rushed to Bonds' aid, stretching the slugger for several minutes before taking him to the trainer's room, where he received treatment and rest, soothing the soreness. The San Francisco star was scratched from the Cactus League game against the Texas Rangers at Scottsdale Stadium and took several snoozes on the training room table before leaving the ballpark, reportedly feeling much better. He did not speak to reporters. "He took a swing in the batting cage and had some low back pain," said head athletic trainer Stan Conte. "He has this from time to time, and if this was a regular-season game he probably would have played. I hate to say it, but he's almost 40 years old and he's going to have this once in a while. We're not overly concerned with it." Perhaps not coincidentally, during drills the day before, manager Felipe Alou said Bonds lifted minor leaguer Robert Stratton -- all 250 pounds of him -- off the ground, although that isn't considered what precipitated the injury. Bonds, who was not originally scheduled to play in Thursday's game at Surprise vs. the Texas Rangers anyway, may start on Friday in Scottsdale against the Milwaukee Brewers, depending on his condition. This spring, Bonds has played in four games, with one hit -- an RBI single -- over seven at-bats. Although the Giants downplayed Bonds' sore back, it was distressing to see the slugger take a few swings on the field, including one half-hearted effort on the last pitch. The player immediately threw his bat to the ground, limped out of the protective cage and rolled onto the field. "It may have been due to a funny swing or he slept wrong," said Conte. "It's not unusual for him. He had this last spring and it doesn't seem to be anything serious. We're listing him as day-to-day."
March 11, 200422 yr Author even if it's a small injury a small injury to Bonds will kill the team, and back problems keep on coming back so i don't know
March 11, 200422 yr Perhaps not coincidentally, during drills the day before, manager Felipe Alou said Bonds lifted minor leaguer Robert Stratton -- all 250 pounds of him -- off the ground, although that isn't considered what precipitated the injury. hmmm... Rob Stratton, we know him. :lol
March 11, 200422 yr I hope Bonds gets a career ending injury BEFORE he beats Mays. Now, I know I am sounding like a hypocrite, but guys, BARRY IS A CHEATER. It would be equalizing the UNIVERSE if he stopped hitting homeruns. Quite frankly, giambi and sheffield deserve the same thing and so do ALL cheaters. I cannot stand watching cheaters break sacred records of the game. Once Barry passes the Babe, the Babe will have nothing on him Barry will never EVER be considered better than Ruth.
March 11, 200422 yr our Rob Stratton?? ... we released him?? ... hmm :thumbdown We might have traded him to them for some batting practice balls or something. If we did, we got a steal.
March 11, 200422 yr Yea, Bonds is no Ruth. Ruth wrote the record book by himself. Bonds just has HR record.
March 11, 200422 yr Author Once Barry passes the Babe, the Babe will have nothing on him Barry will never EVER be considered better than Ruth. i agree. He wont simply be considered better, he'll be better
March 11, 200422 yr The Giants season is over, Bonds' back goes out So are you finaly accepting that the Giants are a one man team? :whistle

March 11, 200422 yr Once Barry passes the Babe, the Babe will have nothing on him Barry will never EVER be considered better than Ruth. i agree. He wont simply be considered better, he'll be better not if you adjust bonds era to ruth's era. the day bonds out homers the entire league is the day he is better than ruth.
March 11, 200422 yr Author The Giants season is over, Bonds' back goes out So are you finaly accepting that the Giants are a one man team? :whistle one man better than some entire lineups
March 12, 200422 yr The Giants season is over, Bonds' back goes out So are you finaly accepting that the Giants are a one man team? :whistle one man better than some entire lineups You mean like some of our pitchers being better than "certain" whole staffs?

Once Barry passes the Babe, the Babe will have nothing on him Barry will never EVER be considered better than Ruth. well, there might as well be a shortage of MLB players because just about every1 is taking steroids. so when u think about it, its still a fair game! 2 guys taking steroids cancel each other out. so all records should stand. (now it comes down 2 who takes more )
March 12, 200422 yr The juicing problem is made worse when honored all time records are broken. Randy Velarde jucing really didn't ruin the game. i agree. He wont simply be considered better, he'll be better Number 1 adjusted ops all time: Babe Ruth enough said
March 12, 200422 yr Barry will never EVER be considered better than Ruth. I consider Bonds better than the Babe right now, but that's just me.
March 12, 200422 yr Author Barry will never EVER be considered better than Ruth. I consider Bonds better than the Babe right now, but that's just me. Mays is better than both of them though
March 12, 200422 yr Barry will never EVER be considered better than Ruth. I consider Bonds better than the Babe right now, but that's just me. Mays is better than both of them though ruth is HANDS DOWN best there ever was. the man was a team of his own.
March 12, 200422 yr Guys, I can pull out the stat book, he OWNS the stat book. If you want to go through the whole "better conditioning of modern players" argument, I agree with you. However, if Ruth went on steroids and grew up today, who knows. THE POINT IS Ruth was better against his peers than anyone else was against their peers. Ted Williams is the only man close, because he's debatably a better hitter, but he never pitched.
March 13, 200422 yr when barry bonds can go out to the mound and have a 20 win season........ twice, then we can debate whos better so lets just leave it at that
