Deadline Passes Without New Marlins Park

MIAMI -- The Florida Marlins' self-imposed deadline for an agreement on a new ballpark passed Monday with the site and financing still undetermined, so team president David Samson set a new deadline.

Samson said the team now has until May 1 to reach a deal that would allow the new stadium to open in 2007 and ensure the Marlins' future in south Florida.

Samson earlier said a March 15 deadline for an agreement was needed for a 2007 opening. Architects now say they can build a ballpark to open that year if there's a deal in the next 45 days.

The Marlins don't want to wait later than 2007 for the increased revenue they expect a new home to generate.

"There's a lot more work to be done," Samson said. "But we're confident that 45 days from now, we'll stand before you celebrating the Florida Marlins staying in South Florida."

But the Marlins appear no closer to settling on a site than they were four months ago, when the push for a new ballpark intensified after the team won the World Series.

Samson said the Marlins remain open to any site in Miami-Dade County, where financial support is the most promising. However, he all but dismissed the Orange Bowl location favored by the city of Miami.

"No plan has been presented to the team that has been acceptable to the team at that site," Samson said.

Samson declined to say what might happen without a new ballpark, but he said owner Jeffrey Loria won't sell the team and is "committed to South Florida."

Loria bought the team in February 2002. His predecessors, Wayne Huizenga and John Henry, were unsuccessful in their pursuit of a new ballpark.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Alex Penelas said the county is following the team's lead in choosing a site, and he said there has been progress toward a new ballpark.

"It's moving slowly, but it's moving in the right direction," Penelas said. "I remain optimistic that by May 1 we'll be able to do something."

Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and City Manager Joe Arriola didn't return phone calls seeking comment.

The Marlins want a new home because they receive only a small percentage of the revenue from concessions, parking, signage and suites at Pro Player Stadium, which is owned by Huizenga. The team proposes a 38,000-seat ballpark with a retractable roof designed to help attendance by eliminating the threat of summer showers.

All I hope is that the new Marlins stadium can look something like Arizona or Safeco. Also if it helps, I contribute $200 if it means getting this damn stadium built! :mad :

This is all a load of B.S. considering they dont even "need" a new park in the first place.

Would you care to elaborate or would you like to keep us all in suspense? Because I know alot of people here would disagree with you and maybe you should 'splain your stance a little bit :shifty

We regard things as a new stadium, like it's something we are in dire need for

It's not, and it's ridiculous considering moving the marlins out of south Florida, or even Florida, and losing tremendous respect from their main fan base just for a stadium they dont need.

It's not necessary in my book atleast, for a new stadium at this point.

I know a lot of people disagree with me, but this is just my view.

And thats fine, nothing wrong with that. I just wanted you to elaborate a little more thats all :thumbup

everybody is entitled to an opinion but this team makes NOTHING in pro player. if you want this team to be here long term, you better believe we need a new stadium. that or some how get possession of the stadium itself or re-work the lease. i have a better chance scoring with Tyra Banks than that last option happening.

I know a lot of people disagree with me, but this is just my view. I agree that there is nothing wrong with Pro Player, however, the economics of the issue make us financially unable to survive under the current lease. Pro Player has a lot more right with it than it gets credit for, however, the lease that Henry negotiate with Huizenga really f***s us over because the team doesn't make any money from the areas that professional teams really benefit from (parking, concession, luxury sweets).

Marlins not happy with OB plan, Arena site not possibility

Doesnt look good. :mad :

I don't see how you could view this as progress.

This whole issue has turned into an absolute debacle, and the fault lies not only with the governments involved but the Marlins as well, if not even more.

From what is coming out now from Arriola the Marlins are only offering up half of the original $137mil they previously offered. Couple that with the farce of self-imposed deadlines that have absolutely no force or effect and you get a Marlins FO that is woefully unprepared to tangle with lifelong politicos who are experts at knowing how to guard the trough they feed from.

Where are the PR firms and professional governmental liason firms that teams in other cities used when they sought out public funds for a new stadium?

Pathetic. The Marlins look like the gang who couldn't shoot strait.

Although I knew it before it has become even more obvious now.... Samson is sooo far in over his head you can't even see air bubbles anymore.

Sorry, venting again.

This is different. In cities were new stadiums are built, like Detroit, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Baltimore, Texas, etc, these are very old stadiums that more or less needed to be torn down. Sure you can make more money, blah, blah, blah but we're talking about places like Tiger Stadium, Three Rivers, Cleveland Municipal Stadium....people like Babe Ruth played in those places.

If I'm one of the people deciding on this, I see Pro Player as not that old, still being used by Dolphins and hey, to me a stadium is a stadium. Just playing Devil's advocate folks.

all i want for christmas is my 2 front teeth :dork my 2 front teeth :dork my 2 front teeth! :dork .................. and a stadium!!!!!! is that too much to ask??!?!?!?!??!?!?!

Why can't they just take the OB site for example. Didn't the plan include the possibility of adding a roof later on?

Geez...

Geez...

yea well, they say they need a roof IMIDIATELY......... what can you do :confused

You got it all wrong. What would you expect with the deadlines - that the Marlins pick up and leave? They obviously want to stay here and the 'politicos' obviously (some anyway) want to keep them here. There are political careers at stake, and letting the Marlins go could get them a black eye. Especially with the money being spent on a new opera house ($250M+). Which do you think would generate more business?

People, dont expect a deal to happen overnight here. The deadline is more of a guideline - not hard and fast - as anyone who has ever negotiated could tell you. This things work in compromise...chill.

I'd say to be patient....the OB site was not really a "favorite" if you will....

I agree, for some reason I think that the Marlins will lean towards the Dolphin mall site. I drove by today to pick up my friend from FIU and I saw a sign that said up to 70 acres were available right next to the mall. As stated before, with turnpike and future metrorail access, this could be the solution to our problems. And for those who want a stadium to advertise to the citizens, I think Home Depot would be happy with the turnpike traffic and Dolphin mall customers that pass by everyday.

I too have a feeling Dolphin Mall is being explored. Would be nice...

Here is a link with a map showing the Dolphin Mall site:

I am not sure where exactly the site for a new stadium would be, but with the Turnpike, the 836 (yeah, more traffic!!) and a future Metrorail site (I am skeptical, believe it when I see it), this could be a very good site.
