land is just too expensive in Miami Lakes to consider trying to assemble a site big enough for baseball and parking. Just for the stadium alone you need 1,000,000 sq ft and then theres parking which is a couple of million more unless you build a parking garage and that increases the cost by a factor of five.

From Palm Beach County it would take longer to get to Hialeah Racetrack than the downtown Miami Arena site. I'm not thrilled about either site as they both mean weekday games will be few and far between. However, if that's what it takes to keep the team, then I'll deal with it.

 

As long as we are talking about sites further west, what is eveyone's thought about the intersection of I-75 and the Turnpike? Good access from all directions, and plenty of open land.

The best thing about a Hialeah site, as was mentioned by someone else, is that the people there are HUGE baseball fans. I worked in Hialeah in the summer, and as early as June everyoen from middle-aged men to old nurses were talking about the Fish, sporting Marlins gear, etc. A distinct Marlins culture could develop, like with other more-entrenched ballclubs, with an emphasis on the Latin side of baseball. The Marlins would become a central part of the entire, heavily-populated community.

anyone who doesnt want it in hialeah is just cause its not to your conveniance. either distance or w/e. and the same for us who live in hialeah we dont want it anywhere else farther from us. so live with it hialeah is the best option right now. hialeahs not the ghetto people make it seem. Hialeah has improved drastically in some parks.I agree the hialeah site should be considered as a backup in miami dade. Plus hialeah has the 2001 2002 6a state champion hialeah t-breds

I find it strange that people would not feel safe in Hialeah? If we can go to Carol City-Opa Locka to the Pro, why not Hialeah? Hialeah gets a bad reputation, yet is way safer than any of the other sites proposed in Miami Dade. Also, Hialeah is a progressive city with public projects always taking place. for example, Ockeechobee was just expanded and now runs smoothly at all times of the day. The city has great credit and is in better financial standing than Miami.

You folks in Hialeah with the inferiority complex are taking a few poorly worded comments and missing the point, Hialeah is poorly located to service the vast majoity of Marlins fans that the team wants to draw upon. It's amrketing and transportation issue and nothing more.

 

Everybody lives somewhere and if you're proud of your city I think that's great. But from a transportation and marketing standpoint the racetrack site just doesn't cut it. There's no visibility, no connection to the rest of South Florida, no access or egress, it's a big chunk of land that is virtually undevelopable (for any purpose) for just those reasons. If the site was so great why hasn't someone developed it yet?

 

It's simple, you can't get there from here. It has nothing to do with crime, it has nothing to with any unflattering perception people might have of Hialeah which I happen to agree with you is unfair and perhaps elitist. It just doesn't work.

money knows no boundaries. Look who owns the Sawgrass malls, the Aventura Mall, Merrick Park, virtually none of it is local money, it comes from American and international developers who look for good deals anywhere in the world. If HialeahPark was economically viable it would have been sold or developed by now.

The Hialeah MetroRail station is closest, but the Okeechobee station isn't very far away either.

Hialeah is the only city in dade county that has a surplus

It is one of the safest in southflorida too.

 

The only problem is traffic, but that's changing with all the construction going on. Okeechobee runs smooth so does the palmetto south at the time games are played in weekdays.

 

you can also get there through I95, later changing to the grattigny.

Hialeah Park really has easy access for the most people.

 

1) MetroRail nearby.

2) Tri-Rail users just need to transfer to MetroRail and ride one stop north to the Hialeah station.

3) US 27 gives access for those who live in Western Broward and Palm Beach Counties.

4) The Palmetto gives access for those in South Dade.

5) Only those coming from the east would have big traffic issues.

6) Traffic projects are being done to improve roads and should be done by 2007.

7) Expanded MetroRail system will fit in well with location.

8) Central location in Dade County and SoFla.

9) Closer to most of regional population than other sites considered.

One thing is for sure: The Hialeah site is the popular choice. If the traffic issue is resolved, it would be the perfect site for the new stadium; most agree!

Not my first choice by a long shot, but as long as it's in Dade or Broward, I'm ok with it...my biggest beef is that there is not public transportation (trains) or any talk of expanding it there....

I did the same thing but in the end I had to conclude what happens is the grandstand is kept for some mixed use - cultural museum, retail, educational and the track itself has to go bye bye.

metrorail is already there, doesn't need to be expanded.

The corner of Palm and 32nd has a parking lot. Put home plate there and then you have the grandstand of the track diagonally across, the parking is on all the other spce. the old grandstand has shops, restaurants, a bar and even a barber shop in there, just modernize and it open it for business. The track can be left alone because horse racing may come back if the ballpark happens.
