Is a retractable roof really NECESSARY?

Featured Replies

The roof is very important in attracting the "retiree set" - there are zillions of people aged 70+ who don't go because of the rain/heat. These people have mucho disposable income & need to be catered to as an important SoFla demographic.

This is very true. My grandma is actually coming down here to visit my family in about 2 weeks or so and I asked if she wanted to go to a Marlins game and she said she can't be out in the sun/heat like that for that long.

Wasn't the roof issue one of the concerns of the Marlins? That we get a stadium with a roof?

I agree with the comfort issue. We will never sit in the outfield- that is SweaTopia.

And, if you notice, the founder's seats are half empty because of the heat during early games. These are older people who can afford to drop thousands for a full season ticket and then don't go to the games.

We moved to the club level between home and third for that reason- the heat was unbearable. I don't tan- I burn and get blisters afterward.

Another plus is that it would open up other possibilities for other venues during the year or when there is away games.

Today I experienced a very pro-roof afternoon. Rain delay for an hour, and then painful sweltering heat for the next 2 and a half. Ughh...

we need a roof, i hate going to day games I get fatigue and feel like fainting if i run around too much(which i do to get autographs and to get food without missing the game)

First off, let me quickly say hi and introduce myself... Even though this is my first post, I've been a "regular" Guest of this forum for almost a year now. All this time I've been enjoying all the discussions, stories and game threads while lurking in the shadows, but now I'm finally ready to join one of the best (if not THE best) message boards on the Net.

Now, about the roof... a few days ago, I visited Tropicana Field to support our Marlins. Here's what I learned about baseball indoors. First the good:

1) It was the most comfortable three hours of baseball I've ever experienced. There's nothing quite like watching a game in an air conditionined room on a 92+ degree summer afternoon;

2) I had to drive a loooooong way to see that game. I would have been upset if something happened that spoiled my travel plans ? like a rain delay;

3) Sure enough, mid-way through the game, a thunderstorm rolled through... and nobody got wet.

Of course the bad part of it is, the Dome is fixed, so Tampa Bay fans can't choose to watch an outdoor MLB game if it's a nice day outside. I'm sure that at some point people get tired of looking at the same old roof, wishing they could get at least a small glimpse of blue skies overhead.

With the retractable roof, this wouldn't be a problem. We can, for example, have all games in April, May and September played with the roof open, then close the roof during the hot June, July and August early afternoon games and Sundays. And of course, when it rains.

People have stated often that the folks here in South Florida have widely varying attitudes and styles ? there are those who are all about tradition and like to watch baseball out in the open, and those who like the comfort and convenience of an air-conditioned, weather-proof venue. I'm in favor of the retractable roof because it gives people CHOICES ? you can choose to attend an open stadium game, or a closed air-conditioned game. Or ALL the games, without the fear of getting rained out. It gives EVERYBODY ? the fickle and the die-hard ? an opportunity to rejoice in and be a part of the excitement that is Marlins Baseball.

:cool

as a person who attends games in a retractable roof stadium I have to say that it is indeed nice ... we have it out here for one thing only, sun protection ... night games the roof is open, day games it closed ...

i think it is a necessity for south florida as well .. mainly for the reasons stated above .. it provides security for your ticket purchase, comfort for the games, opens up the versatility of the stadium as a comprehensive venue, et al .....

plus the retractable nature allows you to give the stadium a ballpark feel ... I actually liked watching games in the metrodome, but it isn't the same ... definitely prefer bank one

Read my post earlier in the thread. The reason why the county relaxed the proposed lease was because with a roof they could hold events in the offseason.

Surely that is better bang for the Marlins' buck than the last plan that had the Marlins partly paying to renovate the Orange Bowl for a private university's football team.

The County stands to make more from the roof than the Marlins. This baby will have the roof. An All Star Game, an NCAA Final Four, and several other concerts could make this a very profitable venture.

If we have a roof on our stadium it better be retractable. I really dislike the ones who arent.

I think it we don't get a roof its not a big deal :)

Fixed roof would be dramatically cheaper than movable. You can use lighter cheaper components because nothing is ever cantilevered and hanging in the breeze. The track, motors, and retraction control system is not cheap either.

If you do something like Ford Field in Detroit, you won't have real grass unless you make it translucent enough for sun to pass through, but not enough to bother the players.

theres 2 tropical systems close enough to south florida to disrupt baseball

if thats not a good reason to have a roof, i dont know what is

The new ballpark probably wouldn't be used during a tropical system, even if it is minor because the roof is still not solid and may not be too safe. Accessing the park would also be difficult since most of the people would have to drive through large amounts of rain and wind.

Roof or no roof, if a tropical system comes this way, NO ONE is going to go out to see a game.

Do you think they would hold a Devil Rays game in Tropicana Field if Bonnie hits? :mischief2

No. The Devil Rays are the first team with a dome to postpone a game because of weather a couple years back because one of these systems.

Exactly. So why would the Marlins play a game in tropical conditions even if they had the roof on?

Nobody is that dumb.
