SAN DIEGO -- Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Brad Penny left his first start in more than five weeks in the fourth inning Wednesday night with irritation of a nerve in his pitching arm.

Penny threw a pitch to San Diego's Jay Payton and immediately grimaced while holding his right arm. Dodgers manager Jim Tracy and assistant trainer Matt Wilson came out to the mound.

The Padres led 3-0 when Penny left after throwing 75 pitches.

Penny was acquired in a six-player deal with the Florida Marlins on July 30, but was making only his third start since the trade. He left his start Aug. 8 against Philadelphia in the first inning with a strained right biceps. Penny was placed on the disabled list Aug. 15 and was activated from the DL before Wednesday's game.

How soon until the media starts pointing to the Mota/LoDuca/Enc trade for their collapse? The Dodgers have been scoring more runs and their bullpen has statistically been better since the trade.

how about the fact they've just been overachieving while the Giants have been underachieving?

they could hardly have seen this coming with Penny. and they also got Finley out of the deal who has been very good.

Exactly. The Giants aren't a bad club. Sabean did a great job of adding cheap productive players around Bonds and Schmidt. He knows you don't big names and veterans to win, just a team that is well constructed.

MRI to be done today, but Penny is expected to miss the rest of the season.
