Pavano's future: When the season started, Carl Pavano was the Marlins' fourth starter. Now, after he logged his 18th win of the season, the All-Star is leaving his options open as to where he will pitch next year.

 

A free agent, Pavano made it clear he will test the market.

 

Barring a change of heart if he decides to pitch on Sunday, Pavano made his final Marlins start on Wednesday, tossing seven innings in a 9-1 win over the Expos.

 

At 18-8 with a 3.00 ERA, Pavano promises to be one of the most sought-after players in free agency.

 

"It's a payoff of a lot of hard work and dedication," said Pavano, who established a season mark for wins. "Personally, I'd like to thank everyone. I know I went out there and pitched, but I only have so much control over certain things. What I've learned, through the struggles and tribulations I've been through, all the people around me helped me through it."

 

Asked directly about free agency, Pavano noted he wants to take advantage of his leverage.

 

"I don't think you can get your mindset on either one," Pavano said of either remaining with the Marlins or leaving. "But that's the reality of it. You try to stay even keel because things can change. The economics of baseball, the reality of it is, I can be in another uniform."

 

Pavano doesn't see himself taking a lesser offer to stay a Marlin.

 

"I'm not sure," Pavano said. "I'd have to get together with my agent. It comes down to what the market is there for you. I don't know if it's beneficial to sacrifice part of my livelihood."

 

Pavano added he doesn't have a first preference, but notes that playing in the National League would be nice since he has a comfort level.

 

"The team I want to pitch for, obviously, has a defense behind me, where I'm going to be happy, and the park itself," he said. "Those are the things I'm going to expect."

 

The Marlins will make a push to retain Pavano, but his price tag may be too high.

It's funny how articles are written. Carl is quoted as saying he's not sure and he doesn't know...yet the article says he will clearly test the free agent market. Not sure, doesn't know, could be. Not too clear to me. They spin it how they want.

Whatever, he's a proffessional sports athletes. There are no Tony Gwynns or Cal Ripkens anymore. It is disappointing, but I am not all that down just because I don't know if he is worth the 10 million. He could just end up being like Derek Lowe

i wouldn't blame him at all for taking the money and pitching for the yanks. if he decides to leave, i'm sure he'll handle himself with class.

 

that's in stark contrast to an aging catcher coming off a relatively poor season--and whose wife, kids, and statue all reside in miami beach--classlessly giving the finger to an organization that couldn't afford to sign him to a long-term contract.... and instead deciding to prostitute himself to the worst team in baseball.

The finality of the wording here, and the fact that it comes from the Marlins website, sounds like management has already written him off. I doubt they'll make a reasonable bid.
