Still wondering why the Marlins dumped Perisho?

Featured Replies

And the Marlins aren't done shopping. The team still needs a left-handed bat, a fifth starter to replace Ismael Valdez, who declined the team's offer of salary arbitration Sunday, and likely will look into some left-handed relief help after refusing to come up with the extra $50,000 it would have taken to sign Matt Perisho.

In Beinfest and Loria we trust right? :plain

I've heard numbers from $50 - 75K but whatever the number is, at least to me, it's irrelevant. Obviously, the FO and/or field management (read Jack) have minimal interest in bringing him back because the chasm between bid and ask is so small that it would be easily resolved if both parties wanted to make a deal. We are talking chump change to begin with so money is not the issue.

It seems to me one of two things is at play here - Jack doesn't want him on his team either because of the person he is or because he has lost confidence in him as a pitcher, or the FO/mgr think they can do better in the FA market because they don't think he has enough left in the tank to contribute in 2005.

There are other possibilities but one of them is not the money.

This is not a money issue....we originally signed Antonio Alfonseca to a large contract and we got Todd Jones. The FO just simply believes that Perisho is only worth so much and they didn't budge.

In Beinfest I trust!!!

i agree, everytime i saw perisho come out my heart was at my throat. He always got hit hard. i think lefties like him are a dime a dozen.

I second that, when I saw him running to the the mound, I would go like "oh no, here we go..."

I praised Perisho all year when he was used correctly, but these folks are right. he is no big loss. He is decent as a lefty specialist but Jack refuses for that to be his role. He would constantly be kept in games until he got knocked around. Speaking of which he had his best stats in years....why? Pro Player Park keeps many balls in play.

Next lefty? :)

I was really hard on Perisho early in the year. After all, at that time he had a walk rate of 5 per 9 innings and was especially lucky to not have one of his bequeathed baserunners score. But over the course of the last 3 to 4 months, he did a good enough job to deserve his spot on the roster.

While I'll not miss him next year, he was a servicable major leaguer. And one that should be awarded a job in the majors next year. Just not with the Marlins, who already have a half-dozen major league-quality arms in the 'pen and more pressing needs.

other than Benitez, what reliver didn't make you hold your breath when he came in last year??

50k? C'mon.... the guy got lefties out which is what he was paid for. I have no beef if the FO thinks they can find someone to do the same job, but to find one at basically the major league minimum you're mostly rolling the dice. At least we had some evidence that Perisho could fill that role fairly well.

No question we have more pressing needs though.

Obviously there are issues beyond money that are driving this decision, because the small amount as been mentioned, $50-75,000, could easily be addressed through makeable incentive clauses in a new contract that would satisfied both sides needs.

But unfortunately because we have some of the worst sports reporters in America covering baseball at all three newspapers in South Florida we'll probably never know what is really driving this decision.

I've proferred earlier my ideas as to why but money has nothing to do with it.

I second that, when I saw him running to the the mound, I would go like "oh no, here we go..."

Same here and good riddance.

If the Marlins wanted to re-sign him, they would have re-signed him. It's just that simple, money is not the issue here and if any of you think the only reason the Marlins chose not to re-sign him was because of a measley 50k, you're being incredibly naive.

It still doesn't make sense to me if they didn't want to take him back why they would offer a take it or leave it offer. Usually when you don't want someone they don't want them at all. They said take or leave 400k he said he wanted 450k and then they said okay fine, adios. Why would they offer him a raise if they didn't really want him?

I'm willing to accept the fact that Perisho isnt the guy the FO wants. Or that Valdez isnt the answer...but can we please sign some replacements? The holes in the boat dont seem to be getting plugged up.

The holes left by Valdez and Perisho are not going to sink the Marlins before spring training.

Yeah, he's a situational lefty journeyman. Don't sweat the small stuff folks, it's not like you lost Billy Wagner here.
