January 4, 200521 yr A.J. Burnett - S - FLA The Diamondbacks will still have some money to play with after acquriring Shawn Green and could see if they have what it takes to trade for A.J. Burnett or Barry Zito. The Marlins have some interest in Shea Hillenbrand, but Hillenbrand has little trade value. Florida would want a quality pitcher in return for Burnett, and it's safe to assume Brandon Webb isn't an option. There probably isn't a match. Jan. 4 - 2:13 pm et Source: East Valley Tribune
January 4, 200521 yr Yeah, I dont see anything there either. DBacks have nothing to offer. They are stuck chasing after big name FAs and older players to get that team back together until they start netting some young talent. Not a great situation.
January 4, 200521 yr They could offer Javier pay some of his salary, add in Hillenbrand and Murphy and maybe one of their catching prospects. We give up AJ and maybe Stokes

January 4, 200521 yr If you buy into Gammons take on why LA didn't pounce on acquiring Vazquez, which I do, and not because it came from Gammons, then the Fish would be the ideal team for the guy, being so close to PR. The problem is the Marlins need TWO starters and trading one for the other doesn't put us any further ahead, we're right where we started. Unfortunately, after Vazquez and Webb (and absent Johnson) they have no one who would interest us enough to part with the ace of our staff.
January 4, 200521 yr Yeah I don't see anything devloping out of this, they just don't the prospects/major league ready players to get this done.
January 4, 200521 yr If the D'Backs offer Vaz, Shea,Choate and money I think the Marlins have to look very very hard at that.
January 4, 200521 yr I like a deal that includes Brandon Webb. He is a good young pitcher who is cheap and we could keep on our team for three years. That deal may help us sign Beckett in two years. Plus as a sinker-ball pitcher, Webb would do well in Miami. A deal based around him would help the Marlins' future tremendously.
January 4, 200521 yr The problem is the Marlins need TWO starters and trading one for the other doesn't put us any further ahead, we're right where we started. True, but Vaz is signed long term and who knows what our chances to sign AJ this offseason are. I dont think they would trade Webb. Would be kind of funny though if the Marlins did get him in light of the massive arguing over Webb v Willis done a few years back by snake and fish fans. I agree though that they would have to sweeten the offer based on Vasquez's second half season lowering his value.
January 5, 200521 yr Guys, the D-Backs could always get a third team involved here, and if they want him bad enough they probably will.
January 5, 200521 yr Well, we all know Zito isnt going anyplace this year, not with the other two gone. AJ would be a great fit for the Dbacks, but and Webb would help with keeping Beckett. The Dbacks have amde a pretty big committment to now paying players to play for other teams, so the Vaquez thing isnt really viable, though I am sure he would like it being so close to home. Hairston is pretty damn good....and he fits into the Marlins style of play, but they wouldnt give up Webb and Hairston...so....this probably is not a fit...

And I too believe Vazquez wants to be close to PR - even if it did come out of Gammons mouth. A lot of Latin ballplayers have this sentiment.

January 6, 200521 yr Can someone explain why the Marlins are interested in Hillenbran? 648813[/snapback] I don't think they are. The story is that the D'Backs are looking for another pitcher and they would "like" to pursue are Zito and Burnett. That doesn't mean the Marlins are interested in trading with them or more specificlly, trading Burnett. The fact that Hillenbrand is available is a story unto itself. There are numerous published stories that Hillenbrand is in fact headed to Toronto. Unless the Marlins are planning a wholesale shakeup of the team, which I doubt, then acquiring Hillenbrand makes little sense. Now maybe if a trade were proposed that included SH and Brandon Webb, or SH and Vazquez for Burnett and fiill-in-the-blank that might some sense but it's inconceivable that the Fish would ever trade AJ for SH straight up.
January 7, 200521 yr LoDuca Conine Castillo Pierre Harris Hillenbrand Maybe we can trade Miguel Cabrera for Jason Kendall!
