January 17, 200521 yr The Mets dropped off the face of the earth when injuries decimated their team. What team could contend when they lose their biggest power threat (Piazza), #1 and #2 hitters (Kaz and Reyes), and one of thier major deadline acquisitions (Zambrano) over the course of a week. If you remember accurately, the Mets were serious contenders in the NL East for the entire first half of the season and the beginning of the second before injuries put half their starters on the DL; and they added the best FA pitcher and position player on the market. When you factor in David Wright playing a full season, moving Reyes back to short, and dumping Stanton and Franco; they have already addressed some of their weaknesses. Would I like to see them add a more proven set-up man? Sure, but that's an easier piece to fill near the trade deadline or midseason. As for the 4th year for Delgado, I really don't think it gets the job done. If they are ready to offer up 40 Mil, they should go balls to the wall and offer it over 3 years. 657546 The Mets were a sub-.500 team for all but one week when they swept the Yankees. Management let that one good week get to their heads and they traded the best prospects for a league-average pitcher and another with no control. Like many have said before, no matter whom the Mets acquire they're still the Mets.
January 17, 200521 yr Sorry but that 4/56 deal with Pedro was just ridiculous.. and that's why you're the mets. 657594 And your team is so cheap they can't resign their two best pitchers and try to make pretend Al Leiter is a suitable replacement. That's why you're the Marlins. 657601 We don't have an endless income like New York teams and most of the time, much unlike you guys, we are smart with how we spend our money. 657612 Smart how? By possibly paying a 40 year old pitcher 11 Mil next season or by paying Mike Hampton to pitch for the Braves? 657620 The Hampton deal is one of the biggest reasons we won a world series, so I don't think you'll hear any of us complaining. 657643 :thumbup

January 17, 200521 yr Ben... there's no point arguing with these guys. They still think Al is good, and because there aren't any name players in our bullpen... they think it sucks. And I like how beinfest here says Kaz sucked for us... when he doesn;t realize how hot Kaz was right before he got hurt. 657569 I've warned them about Al for months. They still think because he had a decent ERA he's still a good pitcher. Like I've said to them, they won't be so happy when he's walking the park and going 5 innings per start. As for under-estimating the team, I could really care less if other teams consider us a threat. If they don't, that's their mistake. 657576 I think the Mets will be fine. As far as Leiter's concerned.... You want 8 innings per start you might not like what you're getting in that guy you just gave 13 million per season to either... :whistle

January 17, 200521 yr Author Like many have said before, no matter whom the Mets acquire they're still the Mets. Change is the only constant thing, man. If that's enough of a reason to write a team off, then you're in for many surprises in sports.
January 17, 200521 yr A cable sports channel costs big money to start. It usually takes 2-4 seasons to become profitable with an MLB and NBA/NHL franchise. Mets TV has no NHL (Rangers owned by MSG, Islanders & Devils signed with FSN New York) and no NBA (Nets own part of YES, Knicks owned by MSG) Mets TV is going to have a big hill to climb before being profitable.
January 17, 200521 yr Author Actually... Pedro routinely makes it to the seventh, it is PAST that, that you get concerned However, that is STILL an improvement over the 5 that Al gives.

January 17, 200521 yr Actually... Pedor routinely makes it to the seventh, it is PAST that.. that you get concerned However, that is STILL an improvemnt over the 5 that Al gives. 657656 :lol :lol :lol Dood, I am a big Sox fan, and let me tell you, last year was the first time in a while Pedro actually made it into the 7th. Doesn't mean he is healthier though because his labrum is done. I will take Al who is a positive influence on our young pitchers and is a great pitcher in PPS, over Pedro who you have for four years at hugely overrated price.

As far as Pedro goes, I know the Mets overpaid for him, but as someone earlier mentioned, it goes beyond that. They had to make a splash.

January 17, 200521 yr Could anyone else do without the Mets fans in here? Maybe I'm alone on that one..

And I don't think Jaime Cerda is gonna be much more than a nice reliever.

January 17, 200521 yr Leiter should have gone to the AL, where they haven't seen his stuff. Hitters know what's coming when they face Leiter. He's way too predictable.

January 17, 200521 yr the fact that you are comparing pedro to Al proves my point. Al is our #3 starter and is on a one year deal. Anyone that criticizes the hampton deal has a very short memory. Florida Marlins 2003 World Champs. A 3 year 40 million dollar deal makes more sense than that 4 year 40 million dollar deal. It is a good sign that the mets didn't go 4 years in the 52 range. Now we need Delgado's camp to pass on waiting and sign the Marlins 3 year 38 million dollar deal. The longer this goes on the less our chances imo.
657620 Actually you got it the other way around. We're paying Hampton 11 million and Leiter is getting paid 8 million (1 million of which will be donated to charity). But, like other members have said, without this deal we don't get JP and we don't win the World Series.

(3 mil including donation if I remember correctly)

January 17, 200521 yr I'd be happy with Pedro on my team too.. I don't know if I'd be thrilled giving a pitcher with rapidly declining skills 4 years though.
