January 18, 200521 yr Both Mota and Spooney signed 1-year deals for 2.6 million and 350k respectively. c/o: Herald
January 18, 200521 yr Author Spooney at 350k is awesome, i'm not sure what types of incentives are involved though.
January 18, 200521 yr For some reason I thought Mota would be getting more than that 658403 No more California taxes to compensate him for.
January 18, 200521 yr I guess this is a subtle way of saying we're not getting Delgado. 658440 Why? They knew they would have to pay these guys about this much before they started negotiating with Delgado.
January 18, 200521 yr This is a steal, Mota was like what 2.3 million last year? 658462 $1.5 Million
January 18, 200521 yr Perhaps a bit higher for Mota than expected. What's nice is to see the incentives given with each contract.
January 18, 200521 yr Perhaps a bit higher for Mota than expected. What's nice is to see the incentives given with each contract. 658527 Actually, ESPN had Mota at $3 Million after arbi, so we came out on top there.

I saw an earlier estimate at $2M. But this is probably about right considering we paid $3.5M for Benitez last year (which of course was a bargain).
January 18, 200521 yr so spooney can leave next year right? he better be smart and stay here and not go for the money.
January 18, 200521 yr so spooney can leave next year right? he better be smart and stay here and not go for the money. 658550 No, I don't think he can. He's arbitration eligible 2 more years, I believe.
January 18, 200521 yr These two will be the heart and soul of our pen. We need a big year out of them.

Maybe it was the market. More likely because of the early signing (no arbitration hearing) and recent history with Penny and Pavano, Loria and Beinfest are overpaying to keep guys happy.
