January 24, 200521 yr How much money do the Marlins and Loria really have? 2 weeks ago, a $50 million contract would have seemed like a pipe dream, then when we offered the 3 year, $35 million contract we were all marveled at how serious the Marlins were dropping our jaws at how the FO was willing to spend so much money and now we have bumped our offer up to more than $50 million! Where is all the money coming from? All indications in the past have pointed to Loria being one of the "poorest" owners in all of baseball, by the standards of fellow owners of course, so where is all this extra money coming from? Surely it isn't from ticket sales, parking, and concessions at PPS.... Is Loria worth more than most of us previously thought?
January 24, 200521 yr I liked Admin's reasoning that he found the Mona Lisa behind is couch, or something along those lines.
January 24, 200521 yr think about it this way.... we were planning on offering Pavano 3 years 21 million, & even though Leiter's getting that for one year, there was obviously going to be SOME money available, especially in the next few years with Hampton & Pudge money coming off the books. Aside from trying to lock up AJ, the Marlins are basically set. There are no more big contracts coming up that I can think of. Lowell, Castillo, JP, Beckett, Willis, Cabs, the main guys are locked up for the time being. So one big signing of Delgado & they can pretty much stay put for the next couple of years. (At least I think so....)
January 24, 200521 yr I'm sure the contract will be structured in such a way where Delgado only gets a bit this year, and a lot more over the next few years, and some money even after his contract is up.
January 24, 200521 yr well, listen - it's not like Loria or the "marlins corporation" or whatever puts every last cent that they earn back into the team. Let's face it - this is a business. a certain portion of all profits go right into his pocket. loria has the capability to spend more, just like your boss has the capabilitiy to pay you more, but it just means that he takes home less himself at the end of the day. that being said, there are always situations in any business where a new expenditure is cost-justified by the increase in productivity and thus future profits. Think of it like a company that is just barely squeaking by going out and buying a new computer system. Do they have the money to do it right now? maybe not. will the increased productivity from the computers make them more money in the long run? probably. that's how I see Delgado. while he may not be cost-justified on his own, the legitimacy he adds to the team, not only in the eyes of fans but also in the eyes of future free agents who may be scared to talk to us b/c they don't feel we are committed to winning, will likely payoff in increased revenues. Thus, paying him $12 million per year makes more sense than signing 3 guys for $4 million each would.
January 24, 200521 yr Exactly what I've been saying, except I was far less eloquent. Perhaps they'd been planning this for awhile and that's why ticket prices went up.
January 24, 200521 yr why is the world Marlins misspelled on the title. 664733 Typographical error. Why didn't you use proper punctuation, spelling, or capitalization?
January 24, 200521 yr Author why is the world Marlins misspelled on the title. 664733 Because it's late and my fingers are tired from typing so much in the Delgado thread :lol .

January 24, 200521 yr Doubt it's 'special money' or any type of hard cash. Most likely he realizes the potential impact signing Delgado may have to the franchise and is wlling to risk more losses for future rewards. One rational way to do that is to backload the contract into the years you expect increased revenues. Or what Fishin204 said

Perhaps they'd been planning this for awhile and that's why ticket prices went up. 664525 That sprung to mind for me as well. Now, I (as a season ticket holder) feel they're more justified in almost doubling my season cost.
January 24, 200521 yr The marlins arent guaranteeing a fourth year most likely. So by the time our other improtant pl;ayers start coming off the books, delgado will too. And hopefulyl by then we'll have more revenue because the staidum will be getting built. I think the marlins do have a plan for AJ, which most likely involves waiting and seeing what his elbow does during the first half of the season, and if hes fine theyll try to lock him up long term or trade him away. We cant forget that next offseason burnett, leiter, and valdez are all free. So we need to have a plan for pithcing in the future.
January 24, 200521 yr the fact Loria is a great owner. 664852 I wouldn't go that far 665046

January 24, 200521 yr Yup. People seem to think that if George Steinbrenner bought the Expos they would have been saved. It didn't matter who was the owner, they were doomed ever since the strike.

January 24, 200521 yr No, it was probably the gross incompetence of the former owners (the same minority owners who sued Loria) throughout the nineties who had twice given up and sold the team to Bill Collins' Northern Virginia group before the deals were blocked by Bud Selig.
January 25, 200521 yr You are both right. The local owners were terrible for years and are a huge reason for the demise but Loria really didn't do much good either with the way he handled the TV/radio situation and a bunch of other stuff. Lots of people were ready to give Loria a chance in Montreal but he immediately pissed people off with his handling of the TV/radio situation.
