I was playing basketball today, like I usually do with my friends. We had finished playing for the day and were sitting on the fence about to go to McDonald's when we see a man on the floor clenching his fists. He had been in a game and stopped playing, and was right off from the court. Everyone went to his aid and 911 was dialed immediately. A police officer was on the court playing, so he was there to administer CPR. Park staff came immediately, and the Rescue was there within minutes. They did everything they could, working on him more than twenty minutes. The medics shocked him twice, gave him several adrenaline shots, gave constant CPR, the works. They tried a charge one final time but they lost him. They put a blanket over his head and he died there, on the court.

I hope his family deals with it alright, it's a tough way to go.

if you don't mind my asking, do you have any idea how long he had to wait before he got defibrillated?

I'm not 100% what that is, medicine isn't my area of expertise. I do know he was shocked the second the rescue got there. They put the pads on right there. Adrenaline came 2-3 minutes later.

yeah, that's what i was referring to (the shocking).

that's basically what could've saved the dude's life had he received it quickly enough. nowadays there's actually an effort to put them all over the place in public locations, almost like fire extinguishers.

Juanky, that is a very scary event to witness. Too bad they didn't have the AED there. The AED combined with CPR can be more effective than what the paramedics could do because they are done quickly. The first 3 minutes are crucial to survival.

Yeah, he got it immediately and the best they got out of it was a weak pulse. He wasn't down for long before the rescue arrived, ten minutes tops between the time he left the game to the time the medics strapped him up for the shock. The thing was the players from the game said he originally just sat down on the side, and then when he lay down and stopped talking to anyone and turning red is when the game stopped and everyone tried to get him help.

that really blows.

after 10 minutes it's pretty much a sure death.

If there's any blame on the slow reaction time, it's the location of the courts. They are about middle of the park, so even though the Rescue was coming from across the street they had to pass through at least 5 speed bumps just to get to the courts, and then 2 more to park right next to where the guy was down.

I remember when the AED training was given to me, I was told to search out the AED symbol and an officer. I know how to use it thankfully, but just in case.

It may look something like this. It usually has the words AED, a heart, and either a lightning bolt or arrow pointed at the heart.

These units are similar to the paddles the paramedics use but are easier and safer to operate. Many of them can be operated using the voice or visual instructions. I suggest that you should try to take the Heartsaver CPR/AED course.

This is a very sad event, but it is not common. Cardiac arrest is a terrible way to die.

They didn't have an AED and an employee trained to use it?

Tropical Park.

Of the two people from the park that responded to the emergency, one was a lady who just stood around on a handset and the other was a guy who went straight into helping with CPR and trying his best to do what he could along with the police officer who had been in the game.

Oh i've played on those courts, they are quite a bit away from Miller or Bird Road so I can imagine the ambulance just taking long within the park. Poor guy.
