July 20, 200321 yr That's funny... I just want the Josh that pitched against the Braves to show up. I LOVE that Josh...
July 21, 200321 yr Author He's changing his number to honor Roger Clemens well he better start pitching like his hero
July 21, 200321 yr I don't care if his number is 00, I just want W's on the board for the Fish! :lol Yeah, well as I said in my outlook -- I forsee a good second half for Beckett. Jersey number won't make a difference obviously.
July 21, 200321 yr Yes it can LArry, I'm a supersticious(sp?) baseball fan and I think something like that could change it. Ok start to laugh.
July 21, 200321 yr I ain't gonna laugh. I don't believe in it but hey, Nomar does his thing and whatever works for ya -- go with it.
July 21, 200321 yr I believe that routine is more important than things like number, socks, clothes, etc.
July 21, 200321 yr Yes it can LArry, I'm a supersticious(sp?) baseball fan and I think something like that could change it. Ok start to laugh. The fans may not believe it will... But Beckett might convince himself so strongly in his head that it WILL help that he'll start pitching better. Thats what I'm hoping for :whistle
July 21, 200321 yr Yes it can LArry, I'm a supersticious(sp?) baseball fan and I think something like that could change it. Ok start to laugh. I dont know if you were suggesting this or not, but that man featured in your picture, Jordan that is, changed his number from 23 to 45. We all know what happened then... Ahh...the power of numbers...
July 21, 200321 yr we really need beckett to pitch the second half like an all star, 21 is a good number, hope it works..
July 21, 200321 yr I believe that routine is more important than things like number, socks, clothes, etc. socks mean alot if you are used to putting them a certain way.
July 21, 200321 yr These things are only important if you ARE superstitious. If you convince yourself that changing a number will make a difference, or not washing your hat makes a difference, or putting deer urine on your bat makes a difference, then it very well might.
July 21, 200321 yr Beckett changes number, but luck? Pitcher trades No. 61 for 21 By KEVIN BAXTER [email protected] All those kids who picked up Josh Beckett jerseys at Pro Player Stadium last month will be disappointed to hear that the Marlins right-hander has had a change of heart. Or, more precisely, a change of numbers. When Beckett takes the mound tonight against the Montreal Expos, he'll be wearing No. 21, marking the first time he has appeared in a major-league game without No. 61 on his back. But, contrary to popular belief, the change isn't a tribute to fellow Texan Roger Clemens -- who wears No. 22 these days anyway. ''I just wanted to change things up a little bit,'' he said. ``There really is no reason.'' Beckett proposed the change a few days ago, but the Marlins asked him to think about it. He did. And he still wanted to make the switch. No. 61 was a compromise in the first place. Beckett's preferred number is 19, but third baseman Mike Lowell has had that number since the right-hander broke into the majors two years ago. So Beckett turned the number upside down. Since he didn't figure to get No. 19 anytime soon -- ''I'm hoping they sign Mike Lowell to a five-year deal,'' Beckett said -- he decided not to wait. Besides, after four trips to the disabled list, Beckett is hoping to change his luck as well. He settled on No. 21, he said, because after rookie Miguel Cabrera claimed No. 20 last month, it was the closest one to 19 still available. ''Well, there is 18,'' he said. ``But I don't want to be 18.'' In any case, tonight's start is an important one for Beckett, who is 3-4 with a 3.86 ERA. He came off the DL 21 days ago -- there's that number again -- to hold the Atlanta Braves to no earned runs over six innings. But in his next start he was hit hard by the Chicago Cubs while struggling with the blister problems that kept him out for much of last season. The blister caused him to skip his last scheduled start before the All-Star break, during which he said it healed. Now he would like to heal the Marlins, who have lost two in a row for the first time in more than a month. ''It's my turn, and I've got to go out there and stop the bleeding,'' he said. ``You just want to go out there and help the team.'' lets hope it works
July 21, 200321 yr Why do you think Clemens and Cabs, ect. always change from high socks to low socks? Or why do Orlando Cabrera and Kevin Millar, ect. have the dirty helmets? It makes a big difference if you think it does.
July 21, 200321 yr Tons of sports players are superstitous about little things. Even I do it. If our pitcher is doing really well while I'm sitting on the couch, and then he starts to do bad when I get up, I get my a** back to the coach right away!
July 21, 200321 yr Well, a prime example with me is last week. I went 0-5 in the first game of our tourtament, so I went and got new spikes, a new undershirt, a new charm for my chain, used different batting gloves, a new bat, and put my pants down instead of high socks. YES, I actually did all of that. Next game I went 3-4 with a walk, two doubles, and 4 RBI. You'd be amazed at how much more, let's say confidence it gives you. Josh will pitch like his ole, I mean young dominant self-- let's hope.
July 21, 200321 yr yeah, I'm pretty sure Dontrelle started throwing like crap because my wife popped a circuit breaker and the power went off in the house. As soon as the power was back on the delay was over (which I figured was due to me this time). I should leave her jinxing a$$ :shifty
