FO Out to Lunch

Featured Replies

In several Salary Cap fantasy leagues... thus always looking for performance bargains. Today's changes were interesting (and FO challenging IMO.)

Dumped Mecir, who I like but have no confidence in Jack's use of the Bull-Pen.

Re-placed him on one team with Denny Bautista, and on another with CHAD FOX.

FO was "Out to Lunch" on both those guys.

In fact, FO inexcusably trashed Chad Fox who was a dedicated Marlins warrior.

I wonder what input Wiley has in the bull-pen relievers?

And why Mota is not ready yet (stagnation?)

Meanwhile, Jack runs his campaign to stretch the Starters... and ignore the health of the Pen. I agree that our healthy Starters need to continue building strength (and pitch thinking nine innings) but it's a long season and when you need a Reliever he has to be ready (not picking pine splinters out of his butt.)

Bautista was dealt in the deal for Conine, and we won the World Series in 2003 so it is hard to argue that trade.

As for Fox, I believe the reason the Marlins didn't keep him is that they would've had to pay him considerably more than the minimum salary due to his salary ast year and it was a major risk considering the injury he had and the time it had been since he could throw a baseball. A risk a small market team has trouble taking.

Denny Bautista the pitcher (not Danny the OF) was available this past Winter. So was Fox.

We hang on to Lenny for sentimental reasons. IMO Chad Fox deserved at least a chance. We screwed up on both of them.

That's exactly right Admin, regarding Chad Fox. The Marlins were in the position (because of the collective bargaining agreement) where they would have had to pay Chad Fox 80% of last year's salary, almost $1 million for 2005, without (at the time) knowing whether he would ever pitch again. No GM in baseball save perhaps the Yankees would have done differently, certainly no GM for a team in the mid-tier payroll range the Marlins find themselves in.

I seem to recall Baltimore trading Bautista for Jason Grimsley in September. I don't remember him being available this past winter. The move was widely criticized on this very board.

Can someone confirm this?

We really couldn't sign Fox, even if we really wanted. We would have had to pay him too much, and it wasn't worth the risk not knowing if he would ever pitch again. Once we didn't offer him arbitration we couldn't negotiate with him again until May 1, and he didn't feel like sitting out for a month waiting for us.

Since its fantasy baseball you can continue to fantasize that both are still Marlins. I usually reserve my fantasies to hot chicks but thats just me. :p

You've got it right, Denny Bautista was never available after he became a Royal. Even when he was an Oriole no one in baseball thought they would just turn around and deal him to someone else because of their horrible management of what situations he would pitch in.

correct.... Denny was never available.

If you want to get on the FO's case, just look at Pudge and D-Lee, we are still looking for replacements.

Oooor why we couldn't find the extra couple mill to get Vladdie.

I was one of the biggest Vlad seekers that offseason, but it's in the past.

Derrick Lee

2004: .278/.356/.504 32 HRs 98 RBIs

I wonder why anyone would want these guys. :plain

Trading Bautista got us Conine, who helped us win a World Series, so I can't argue with that. Plus, our pitching prospects are pretty deep, especially in the lower levels. We have a rotation that should stay intact for years (ideally), so there may not have been room for Denny anyway.

As for Fox, the injuries probably scared our F.O away, and sure would've scared me away. I can't complain about our bullpen WITHOUT Fox right now anyway. I'm happy with our pen.

DLee's numbers improved because of a stadium change... that and he hits when it dont count... ask most marlins fans and now most cubs fans

as for pudge, giving up a 4 year deal is ludacris

By the way you capitalize the first letter of every sentence. You know, just letting you know. I find it funny you point out people's typos and ignore your own. ;) Shows what the type of person you are, angry.

98 RBIs is a lot of RBIs for hitting when it doesn't count if you ask me. And if memory serves me right he hit pretty good in Pro Player, at least power wise. And the man knows how to get on base.

How long did we sign Lo Duca for? Who's better? Also, what do you think about that Delgado deal? You can defend the FO on this case, but I think they thought they would be able to find replacements, and last year they didn't. This year we'll see.

Delgado is better 1B than Derrek Lee.

The question with Pudge was never will he do well his first two seasons, it was whether he'd do it his last two. We offered him 3 years and he chose to go elsewhere, his choice.

Timing was not right for us, with the money owed to Hampton and to Pudge.

I was on the bring Pudge back camp. With that said. He had a good year with us, but it was a down year by Pudge standards.

It was a huge risk to give Pudge 4/40 (he is proving us wrong so far). But I rather see our FO make sound decisions, based on logic and prudence.

At this point it is very easy to be a Monday morning QB like you. :thumbdown

Derrek has played his first dozen games in Arizona and Wrigley. Two frickin' bandboxes and Pudge always beats up on teams early in the year. Get over it.
