July 24, 200323 yr When AJ Burnett used to have the greatest stuff in the world, but could never put it together? Does anybody remember what happened to him last year, at the age og 26? I think Brad Penny is going through the same thing. He's w/o a doubt got the stuff of a 15-20 game winner. The question is just a matter of when he will learn to put it all together. Burnett finally pulled it all into one season last year at 26. Penny is currently 25. If he follows the trend set by AJ, he'll have it ALL working for him next year. He's still a solid guy now, and I honestly think he has a legit shot a 15 wins THIS year, but I think next year will be that YEAR every great pitcher has.
July 24, 200323 yr Author AJ's stuff is alot better than Penny's... dont even compare them Penny has the curve AJ doesn't...
July 24, 200323 yr AJ's stuff is alot better than Penny's... dont even compare them Penny has the curve AJ doesn't... Penny couldnt hold AJ's jock
July 24, 200323 yr AJ's stuff is alot better than Penny's... dont even compare them Penny has the curve AJ doesn't... yeah, AJ doesnt have a knuckle curve or anything
July 24, 200323 yr Author AJ's stuff is alot better than Penny's... dont even compare them Penny has the curve AJ doesn't... Penny couldnt hold AJ's jock Umm... Yes he can? *Can't think of a comeback for that* AJ is much nastier than Penny, but Brad is no scrub. AJ has the 99 MPH 4-seamer and 99 MPH cut fastballs, a very good curve, a pretty good slider, and a good change. Brad has a 96 4-seamer, a low 90's sinking fastball, a 12-6 curveball, and a good change. They can both win 20 games in the future. No doubt AJ is better, but like I said, Brad is no scrub...
July 24, 200323 yr The big diffence is that if Brad' curve is not working than he's in trouble. He does not have enough confidence in his change to use it more often.
July 24, 200323 yr I really hope Penny is traded for quality players before the entire league realizes he's not that good.
July 24, 200323 yr I really hope Penny is traded for quality players before the entire league realizes he's not that good. I heard a few Months ago (ramp or some from redszone prolly brought this up then) that The Reds Offered Dunn and Sullivan for Castillo and Penny :o
July 24, 200323 yr LOL don't beat yourself up WC. Burnett has a curve Doesnt burnett throw his curve at like 93MPH?? :o Thats faster than Mark Redmans fastball
July 24, 200323 yr I disagree WC. If you want to compare anyone to what AJ did it might be Beckett. Beckett looks dominating sometimes, he could break out at any time & run off 5 wins in a row if he stays healthy. Penny is a good but not great pitcher and hopefully is understanding what he needs to do to be consistently effective. Today was a step back after 2 nice outings.
July 24, 200323 yr Author I really hope Penny is traded for quality players before the entire league realizes he's not that good. If the whole league knows he's not good, why would they give us quality for him? Contradiction. The big diffence is that if Brad' curve is not working than he's in trouble. He does not have enough confidence in his change to use it more often. No, that's the big difference between Brad and Josh. Josh has a great change-up, and when his curve is missing he can move to the change and be effective with it. Burnett has the ability to go with the fastball over and over. Penny doesn't, even though it seems like he thinks he's AJ and he does...
July 24, 200323 yr Doesnt burnett throw his curve at like 93MPH?? :o Thats faster than Mark Redmans fastball what are you smoking?
July 24, 200323 yr Redman is a perfect example of why it doesn't matter how hard you throw. Red is 10X the P Penny is, and it's because Red knows how to pitch. All Penny knows how to do is sport wood over his K's and MPH. Penny has never had a consistent "out" pitch, and it shows when his fastball isn't locating well. He's a one pitch pitcher who, on rare occasion, can throw in a curve to mix things up. Penny is perfect trade material. Instead of comparing him to AJ, why not compare him to Dumpster before he went to the Reds. Now there is an accurate comparison.
July 24, 200323 yr Doesnt burnett throw his curve at like 93MPH?? :o Thats faster than Mark Redmans fastball what are you smoking? i swear i've seen A.J. throw his curve 92-93...not consistantly but I know he's done it last year :plain
July 24, 200323 yr Im looking at Burnetts scouting report and it says he has 2 curves.... a " Knee-Buckleing Knuckle Curve" and a "Power Curve"
July 24, 200323 yr Everything is in the execution. When Both of them are executing pitches well, they succeed. The problem is the Penny hasn't been able to find a routine for doing this just yet.
July 24, 200323 yr leave penny, ill take 1 bad start from him if he gives me 3 good ones, thats what he did, and we were still in the game today guys, he wasnt god awful
July 24, 200323 yr I agree, Penny would be a great closer. He can come in and pitch one inning without getting into trouble because he has great stuff and the other team can't usually figure him out until the later innings. I would put Phelps to start and make Penny our closer. He has the stuff and would be a more valuable asset to this team as a closer. Phelps can be the starter to replace him.
