Atop the NL East

With the W tonight we are now tied with the Nationals for the Division lead. :D

Nice to see us climb back to 8-6. What is really nice to see is our pitching staff has given up the fewest runs in MLB at 32, which is half of most teams and 17 runs better than the 2nd place Astros. In contrast, Colorado and the Yankees are tied for last allowing 91 runs. :o

Now if only the bats could continue to be as consistent as they have been the last 3 days....ahhhhh.

Amazing what a 3-game win streak can do, eh? The sky isn't falling after all!

Hey we've basically gone 3 times through the rotation & here's the numbers so far:

Josh -- 20 IP - 0.45 ERA

Willis - 24 IP - 1.13 ERA

A.J. --- 24 IP - 2.25 ERA

Leiter - 17 IP - 2.55 ERA

Moehls -12 IP - 2.13 ERA

The team overall has allowed only 32 runs after 14 games. Next closest team is 43 runs. The hitting took a while to wake up but seems to be heating up. All in all, things are looking pretty good.

It won't be so easy this time, Aaron :nono

And I think we can get a little bit or a streak going here and really take first all for ourselves...the way it should be!

Lets keep it up. We got 5 home games coming up. The least we should leave with is 3-2. Should be fun playing the mets and reds.

Lets keep in mind that those amazing numbers arent going to end the season at that level. If guys come back down to earth in reasonable manners, like the way Willis did yesterday, then we will be set. A pitching staff that gives up two to three runs a game would be great too.

For comparisons sake:

2004 - 33 Runs (2.36 ERA) (4 shut outs) (1st place in division)

2005- 32 Runs (2.29 ERA) (4 shut outs) (Tied for 1st place in division)

The number of runs allowed through 14 games. Its not like we haven't been down this road before. The difference? Last year we were 10-4 through 14.

Ok seriously PhishPhan, I know what you are stating is fact but why are you always negative about the team. When something bad happens you are there. When something good is going on you find the negative angle for it. It never fails and you seem happy about losses sometimes even.

Is there any reason or are you just a pessimistic person?

Just take it one game at a time. :mischief

We are actually performing better than last year if you look at our expected wins and losses.

Plus our offense scored 46 runs after 14 games last year. Compare that to this year after 14 games and it looks like our offense is presenting the improvment we needed from it.

Its not positive or negative. Just what happened the last two years.

You could look at it as a positive, seeing we did this with a staff minus Penny and Pavano.

People are just acting like our pitchers, in particular Willis, hasn't ever been on such a tear before.

You could also look at the negative, that Willis also started last year 3-0, pitched a lot less innings last year than he did last year, at this point, and he did tire down the stretch last year. (19.1 IP vs 24 IP ~25% increase.)

But you can spin that on its head as well:

309 - 2004

297 - 2005

The number of pitches D-Train had thrown at this point. Even though he has thrown more innings he has thrown less pitches. It shows he has learned to throw strikes a lot more consistently.

The numbers are there, make of them what you want, positive, negative or otherwise. I didn't offer much in the way of commentary, was just showing that fast starts are nothing new. Numbers are there, they don't lie. And because I like numbers, that basically means I believe in trends and the past, and what happened before will continue to happen unless you change it, because that is what the numbers dictate. One game at a time, one week at a time, and one month at a time.

And the Marlins could be up 3 games to 0 in the World Series, up 10-0 in the bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, bases empty, no man on, an 0-2 count with the pitcher batting and I would still worry.

And just because I post it, doesn't mean I believe it. But if everyone is happy cheery, and never look at things from another POV gets boring.

I despise most year-to-year comparisons in baseball.

What the Marlins (or any team) did last season or five seasons ago, at least for me, have little relevance. The 2005 Florida Marlins are the 2005 Florida Marlins, not the 2004 Florida Marlins, not the 1997 Florida Marlins.

Teams change. Every team. Some players mature, some are in decline, some gets breaks they didn't get last season, some don't, the variables are too numerous to list here. The facts are the this season's Florida Marlins are out-scoring their opponents, they are out-pitching their opponents, and they are tied for first place as of this writing and as a fan that's what counts.

The 2005 Florida Marlins are the 2005 Florida Marlins, not the 2004 Florida Marlins, not the 1997 Florida Marlins.

Remember, we were in first place for something like the first 2 months of the season last year and we all know how that turned out.

Exactly. It's a long season and let's take it a game at a time.
