I would be selective by player: KBrown SP - Keeper; 1 year left on affordable contract ALeiter - Trade him (appeared injury prone) AFernandez DL - Keep (no choice) Livan SP - Keep still cheap JConine - Trade (seemed to be in decline in late 97) MAlou LF - Keep; productive & worth $5MM/yr GShef & BBo - Trade (bad influence) RNen RP - Keep (quality closer) CJ C - Keep (still productive at that time) JPowell RP - Keep (cheap set-up guy) Dalton - Cut (retired anyway) Counsel 2B - Keep (low priced 2B) Renteria SS - Keep (top quality ss) DWhite - bye bye Cangeialosi, Eisenrich - too old bye bye Zaun C - Keep / cheap DennisCook - hi cost bye Floyd LF - Keep Alfonseca, Heredia RPs - Keep still cheap Kotsay CF - mid-season callup, still cheap, keeper That's 13 keepers. Would need to fill 3B & 1B plus bench with minor leaguers plus about 6 pitchers. Not easy to fill cheaply, but nonetheless do-able with minor league talent plus return on trades. I probably missed a few guys, but that's the basics. Bottom line - We coulda kept enough to remain a playoff contender while still paring payroll.
