July 31, 200323 yr My feeling is I'm a little disappointed, but I'll survive. Bullpen move: Most of the thinking is that the Marlins need a 7th inning guy, and I'm not so sure. I think our starters are strong for the most part and can often pitch 7 innings, with the possible exception of Pavano. Yes there will be scenarios where we'll need someone to pitch the 7th and even 6th, but I don't think it'll make or break the season. Possibly a useful reliever will clear waivers but it's unlikely... Crazy as it sounds, I think they'll wind up with Nate Bump and even Almanza to get them through those situations otherwise. As far as an extra bat, people shouldn't forget that Ramon Castro is on the bench, and in a pinch is a pretty decent bat if they're desperate for a pinch hitter in late innings. That's in addition to Hollandsworth and Banks. Yes I would have liked to have seen something happen today. A reliever or an extra outfield bat (not a starter necessarily). I think most likely the right deal just didn't present itself.
July 31, 200323 yr With the emergence of Bump and the return of Spooney secured this club has no glaring weakness any longer. If the right deal presented itself, Admin would have pulled the trigger. Im happy with the state of the club, and happy Admin didnt make a deal just to make one. Deals still have time to be made through the waiver wire deadline. Lets see what happens.
July 31, 200323 yr I think the marlins could have gone after a lefty for the bullpen but that did not happen so I'm a little disappointed.
July 31, 200323 yr If it aint broke, dont fix it. Best record in 2+ months, says to me (and F.O.), "no problems with our team." Pen's been strong. Pitching has been great. Offense is coming through. No need to give up prospects or mess with team chemistry.

July 31, 200323 yr a trade was gonna make Almanza better? Doubt it. The best way to keep Almanza from ruining games: dont use him (i.e. we havent been using him as much).
July 31, 200323 yr Im kinda upset An arm really would have helped in the pen but Spooney and Borland are coming back so i dont think it really was a blown oppurtunity
July 31, 200323 yr i think we couldve used another reliever, but its not the end of the world. i feel more sorry for the Dodgers, the biggest bat they were able to pick up was Ventura at 3rd. when in the hell did the Yankees get in the Boone sweepstakes? and i believe they picked up Gabe White didnt they?
July 31, 200323 yr I would have liked a deal, but we can go deep with this team. Ever the optomist, I know something will happen in August. Either an undefeated month or a trade for a bullpen arm. Maybe both?
July 31, 200323 yr We didn't "need" anybody. We could have used a reliever like DeJean or a veteran bench OF (capable of playing all three positions plus 1st base) to give our current GREAT starters an occasional break. Still nervous hearing this talk about Spooney's return. Not sure he will be there for the stretch.
July 31, 200323 yr a trade was gonna make Almanza better? Doubt it. The best way to keep Almanza from ruining games: dont use him (i.e. we havent been using him as much). thats not what i meant. What i meant is that we need to get a lefty specialist to replace AA in the pen.
July 31, 200323 yr what would we have to give up for a lefty specialist? And we havent needed a lefty specialist in a long time. When did we last use Almanza?
July 31, 200323 yr what would we have to give up for a lefty specialist?? And we havent needed a lefty specialist in a long time.? When did we last use Almanza? When we will face the Giants we will, or any of those NL west teams. For now we'll have to use urbina who has had success this year against Lefties. To get Heredia we could have sent them Almanza and any mid to level pitching prosepect we have.

The Stanks are in every sweepstakes and Steinbrenner is Ed McMahon.
July 31, 200323 yr im not upset... we will get a reliever one way or another At least that's what Gammons says...
August 1, 200323 yr wanted a deal ...but im not mad that we didnt get it....i like the team we hav now. if it aint broke ,dont fix it.
August 1, 200323 yr im not upset... we will get a reliever one way or another Either from AAA or the wire.

August 1, 200323 yr I am both surprised and dissapointed by our lack of dealing. We needed one more quality reliever with both Spooneybarger and Olsen out for who knows how long, and Almanza being a waste of space. I find it hard to believe that we would pass on trading Almanza to Colorado if that deal existed. Now we just have Looper to close, Urbina to set, and just Bump, Tejera, and Almanza to take care of the rest of our time. Last I checked, Bump is the best of the three, with Tejera being insanely erratic, good one day, awful the next. I really would have liked to see us pick up Mike DeJean, Jose Jimenez, Scott Sullivan, or Gabe White in a deal that wouldn't have cost us much. I didn't care as much about adding another bat in the end, although I remember our '97 World Series team having great depth, allowing more room for error. Honestly, I would have liked to see us pick up Rondell White or Reggie Sanders for the bench. I certainly hope we trade for a reliever before September 1st rolls around. The lack of bullpen arms is our clearest weakness. Grade: C (because we picked up Urbina a few weeks ago)
August 1, 200323 yr if you pick up Sanders or White, its gonna cost you.... and then why would you sit them? and wild card, odom is kidding
