Posted June 28, 200519 yr who the hell is this guy and why did McKeon give him such a long leash in such a close game? i mean jesus. where was mecire or de los santos or reidling or even mota?! why the HELL did he use a young guy in such a tight ball game? we were down 2 runs Jack. Thats it. w/ 6 outs left. How are you going to put a young guy in such a tight situation and give him such a long leash?
June 28, 200519 yr Messenger isn't that bad. He just had a bad outing. He isn't to blame- it is this pathetic offense. 2 runs against Ramirez is garbage.
June 28, 200519 yr He is a triple A prospect that should have a good career. It was only his second start and really the kid made some pretty good pitches. He wasnt getting the calls. I would of liked to see what he would of done to Andrew Jones instead of walking him. But, that double steal took away the option really
June 28, 200519 yr Rather than repeat myself here, see my posts on Messenger in the "Mckeon outmanaged" thread.
June 28, 200519 yr Author de los santos was busy giving up a grand slam 829372 de los santos didnt give up a grand slam. he gave up a home run. and if it werent for messenger's awful outting thats all it would have been. i just read the box score so i cant say how well he pitched. but jack has given mota a shorter leash than this and mota is a proven veteran not some AAA rookie. I am ALL for giving rookies a shot, but there is a place and a time and certain leway you give them. then again, hindsight is 20/20 =/ :confused
June 28, 200519 yr I'm not quite sure why Jack didn't go with the more usual 8th-9th inning guys since it was still a close game, but we can't use the same relievers every night either. I have high hopes for Messenger actually, but he cannot walk people.

If Jack brings in Reidling, Bump, Mecir, etc. and they give up some runs...you'd be crying that Messenger was rotting in the pen and that Jack wasn't utilizing him properly. :thumbdown

Even if he gets out of it, we lose 3-2. Obviously, our offense has sucked all year. We are like the 4th worst in the majors in homers. That is sad for a team with this much talent.
June 28, 200519 yr I still dont know why McKeon didnt let Mess pitch to Jones when the count was 2-2 atleast throw 2 balls in the dirt, why just give him the free pass

Also, I'm sure he was hoping to set up the double play. It's not as if Old Man Franco can run...unfortunatley he can still hit though.
June 28, 200519 yr I'm losing my faith in Jack. In AJ's CG Shutout, when he got into a little trouble in the ninth... He warmed up: Mecir and Bump I believe.. Why not Jones, or Mota?
June 28, 200519 yr I don't know, but consider Jack is usually slow to remove most of his pitchers from games.

Why not Jones, or Mota? 829507 From the Herald: "Manager Jack McKeon had left-handed reliever Valerio De Los Santos warming up in the bullpen in the ninth but said that was only ''window dressing.'' McKeon entrusted Burnett to finish what he had started, the same way he allowed Josh Beckett to go the distance in the deciding Game 6 of the 2003 World Series."
