That's 5th in the majors. - Fewest strikeouts in the majors (min 175 at-bats) Even his OPS and slugging #s, which admittedly don't mean much for that type of player, are his best ever (for a full season). He had some beatiful at-bats last night, reminds you how much he means to this team. There was a time I felt he was the Marlins best player. Yes his stolen base #s are way down from previous seasons, but to watch him work the count, get walks, he's really honed his approach at the plate & has been a joy to watch hit. He's having a season similar to 2000, when he also had great on-base numbers but if you remember was really bothered (which he shouldn't have been) that he only had 17 RBIs for the whole season. Might arguably be the best leadoff hitter in the majors right now... if he were leading off.
June 30, 200521 yr You know I totally agree, not sure if it is his best season but a great one so far indeed, Louie always is so patient at the plate and he just finds ways to get on. I really wish JP would learn a few things from him and take more pitches, besides Louie can still run and he has continued to play awesome Defense. You Rock Louie!

June 30, 200521 yr I think it's rather notable that Luis has been with the team for 9 years, and nobody really commends him for that. I was watching ESPN the other day, and they had a list of all active players to have been with one team for at least 10 years--there were only 7 or 8 players on it. This is Luis' tenth season with the Fish, and you would hardly guess it by the lack of appreciation we give to this man. The best part about that is he's only 29 years old (pretty young for such experience). Ok, some may say that the '96 season didn't count, but he did play on that team (and '97 before Counsell officially stole his spot...no argument here). That's why I think his jersey should be the first retired by the Fish. Jeff Conine is called Mr. Marlin, so Luis should be Master Marlin :thumbup

June 30, 200521 yr I think with the total package of fielding and hitting (leadoff not power), he's one of the top three second baseman in baseball. One reason he's been overlooked is because he was injured and out for so long early. People forgot about him like they forget about his hit streak. His defense is so good it overshadows what he does as a catalyst for the offense.

The reason we haven't been scoring runs is because when Cabs has been getting out (either 1 or 2 outs, depending on what Luis and JP do) the pitchers always intentionally walk Delgado, and Mikey either is the final out, or he grounds into a double play. JP is no longer the weakness, Mikey is.

July 1, 200521 yr luis defined this team's speed-and-defense approach long before JP got here. underappreciated because he doesnt hit for power, didn't have a great 2003 postseason, and doesnt play a glamour position. if you had to name a single MVP for the whole post-fire sale era, luis is the guy IMO. would be great to see his # retired when he hangs it up, especially if he finishes his career in south fla. only guy other than conine who deserves the honor at this point (sheffield was awesome, but spent so much of his career with different teams i would be against it at this point - if he does another tour of duty here that could change things of course).

July 1, 200521 yr Louie's best season was in 2000, the 17 RBI isn't significant because he was the leadoff man and there was nobody to drive in, while it's a little low even for a lead off man, it's not a big deal. His role then and his role now is totally different, what is significant however was his 100+ runs and .418 OBP.
