Fantom05
I have been a Marlins fan since day one, and have seen the team through its many trials and tribulations. However, one major problem I have had lo these past twelve years is that no one truly takes the Marlins seriously. Even when I lived in Florida, support for the fish has always been lukewarm at best, despite two great years which need not be named. I now live in New York, so I get bombarded with Yankees and Mets propaganda on a regular basis. Now I am not sure if it is just my experiences, but whenever I tell someone I am a Marlins fan, I usually get a snicker or two while the person rolls their eyes. This always has frustrated me, but has been bothering me more and more recently. Not only were we champs two years ago, but also have been playoff contenders for a few years now. Yet despite all the superstar talent that has come out of the organization, and despite our growth and success, we are still regarded in most people's minds as a throwaway team. If you don't believe me, take a look at some MLB columnists articles, or tune into ESPN; no matter how we perform, the most we usually recieve is a quick box score a VERY brief game synopsis. No highlights, no interviews, nothing. My question to everyone is this: what else do we need to do to be respected as a legitimate organization? My belief for a while has been that the team hasn't had someone who could be "The Face of the Marlins"; I thought Pudge would be perfect, but he was traded. I think Dontrelle has the potential, but it is still too early to tell (and that's if our Front Office doesn't try to cash in on his success). Twelve years, two championships; one with an incredibly suspenseful Game 7, another with our lowly bunch of misfits defeating the Evil Empire. But STILL not taken seriously in the baseball community. What more do we have to do?

Hotcorner
Don't worry about it. Keep winning, and everything else will take care of itself.
strandedx02
I think any derogatory comments towards the Marlins are made about two things: 1) attendance, 2) fire sale in '98. At least that's all I've heard. But informed baseball fans take us seriously as a team...too much talent not to.
MaRLiNs_FaN_4EvA
sorry to burst ur bubble buddy but pudge wasnt traded he signed with Detroit as a free agent...n yes other than that i have the exact same feelings!
Marlins2003
Our biggest problem right now is the chance that the entire Cubs series will get washed out and god knows how we'll make them up. Getting the Cubs the way they're playing could have meant at least a couple more wins, maybe three and put us in decent shape going into the all-star break, six or seven over .500. Fantom05
True, but the fact that we going to offer him less money per year then he had been making, regardless of a long term contract, was ridiculous. Anyway, attendance. Does anyone know how the FO is trying to boost attendance, other then winning more games? I don't think the answer is a new stadium. It's seems like a Catch-22 to me: no fans are showing up because of the stadium, but a new stadium won't be built without more fan support. Besides, Dolphins Stadium isn't too beat up, and shouldn't be the reason we had the third lowest attendance in the NL. --------------------------------------------------------------- On a semi-related note, if you live in South Florida, how many games do you attend a year? I try to catch as many games at Shea as possible when we're playing the Mets, but if I lived in FL, forget it, I'd be there all the time. musk
You can't go to a true baseball area (midwest or northeast) and proclaim you are a marlins fan. People like the Marlins because they are a feel good story. But people will never consider it a true franchise until they geta real baseball stadium. And when the Marlins are in the playoffs and the games are televised nationaly it just underlines the point that we need a new stadium. people all around the country watch the playoffs and see us playing in that hideous park that is barely good enough for football let alone baseball. also remember we have never had consistent success. the '98 firesale. the organization has changed hands 3 times. and 2003 was never supposed to happen. if we have 3 or 4 years in the thick of the playoff hunt then you'll see some more recognition around the country. as for lukewarm support in south florida. you have to understand, south florida is one of the WEAKEST sports areas in the united states. Even the team that owns south florida when it comes to sports, the dolphins, has no where near the following as the bears, raiders, giants, or jets have (just to name a few). we invented the term "bandwaggon" and "fairweather" here. so don't expect large suport from an area that lacks that characteristic. OldSand
s***ty attendance also has to do with the piss poor public transportation system.
MarlinsFan253
All we need to do is keep shoving World Series Championships down the league's throat and then they will hate you for being a Marlins fan. It is a beautiful feeling. As far as fans goes... What the heck, you'd think that two championships would generate a large enough bandwagon but I guess not. As much as I want more fans, I think it would make me really mad if I see a bunch of people wearing Marlins gear in Michigan after the Fish win it all this year. I feel like people look at me and think that I must be a bandwagon fan. That is why I still want to make a t-shirt that says "This Marlin Fan Est. 1993". When I went to the Marlins/Cubs game on June 13th, my Mom told some guy that she raised me as a Cubs fan and she tried her best. The guy said, "Well I guess it is understandable to be a Marlins fan, they've won more championships." My blood BOILED.

Bleacher seats? Ivy? Rooftop seats? because certainly there is nothing related to baseball that you would be able to root for. The cubs baseball season usually ends in june (The June Swoon as they call it in Illinois). There is something i've learned of cubs fans through my years of living in Illinois - they are idiots. Seriously, 98% of the people who claim to be "cubs fans" couldnt tell you the starting rotation or name the outfield players. Not to mention they LOVE talking SH*T to people who arent cubs fans. If i had a dollar for everytime i heard "Cardinals SUCK" last season and this season i would be a very rich man. Yet the Cardinals are 13 games up on the cubs? I have a special place in my heart for cubs fans.
HolycrapIlovetheMarlins
The fans that do go need to stop doing "The Wave" when our defense is on the field. There is no crying or doing "The Wave" in baseball. Stop the wave, build a stadium, and give us one more generation of new fans, and we will have respect.
