Better cancel Burnett's flight to O'Hare. The White Sox appeared to have the best match for Burnett until the Orioles made a furious charge over the weekend. And now, multiple sources said Monday morning, there is a possibility Burnett could be heading for Baltimore within 24 hours. One baseball man with knowledge of the discussions said, however, that while the teams are now "closer" than they've ever been to a deal, they're still "not in the final stages yet." The Marlins would get back reliever Jorge Julio, outfielder Admin Bigbie and Baltimore's most advanced pitching prospect, Hayden Penn. Baltimore would receive Burnett and agree to take Mike Lowell. The Orioles then would shift Melvin Mora back to the outfield to take Bigbie's place, so Lowell could play third. And Florida would move Miguel Cabrera back to third base, from whence he came, while platooning Bigbie with Jeff Conine in left. Because the Marlins wouldn't be getting a big-league-ready starting pitcher in the deal, they also could try to deal Penn to a third team for a more experienced arm. It's still unclear whether the Orioles would ask for a 48- or 72-hour window to attempt to sign Burnett to an extension. Burnett already has said publicly that he would be interested in signing with the Orioles because his wife is from Maryland, so the need for that window might be moot. The Red Sox (offering a package headed by Bronson Arroyo), Blue Jays (Gustavo Chacin and bullpen arms) and Yankees (Carl Pavano, Felix Rodriguez and prospects) also have stepped up in recent days. But if no one outbids Baltimore before the end of the day, it appears Burnett will be an Oriole.

Looks good for the O's according to Stark. Dont like the part of moving Melmo to the outfield though.

It wasn't the Orioles' offer for Burnett that moved them to the front of this line. It was their willingness to take on Lowell, a guy with a .227 batting average, just four home runs in 300 at-bats and nearly $21 million (and 2 ? years) left on his contract. The White Sox also have interest in Lowell, but clubs that have spoken with them say they're wrestling with whether to mess with the chemistry of the best team in baseball. And while the Twins also have kicked the tires on Lowell, they aren't involved in the Burnett bidding. The Orioles, on the other hand, have been told that if they'll take Lowell, Florida would drop its demand that starter Daniel Cabrera be part of any deal for Burnett. And when the Orioles indicated over the weekend that they would be open to that, the teams began closing in on a deal.

I think that is just speculation , the O's have been really committed to him at third and he is really good there now.

Welcome to Baltimore?

Jul 18 - Mike Lowell is expected to have a new home soon. According to the Miami Herald, the third baseman likely will be be traded to the Orioles as part of an A.J. Burnett deal.

If the O's acquire Lowell, there is a chance he would be moved to first base, the Washington Post reports. Lowell is making $7.5 million this season and signed through next year, and the cost-cutting Marlins are ready to unload his salary.

O, what a feeling?

Jul 18 - According to the Miami Herald, the Marlins are ready to deal, and the Orioles are the favorite to land A.J. Burnett -- though Florida has talked to a host of teams about Burnett, and one report had him and Mike Lowell going in a three-way trade that involved the Red Sox and Padres.

The O's have the upper hand in dealings, and one of the key issues hinges on whether Burnett agrees to a contract extension. Burnett, who is eligible for free agency after the season, is looking for a four- or five-year deal that would pay him about $9 million to $10 million annually. According to multiple sources, the Orioles would agree to a deal either way, but their package to the Marlins would differ based on whether they can convince Burnett to sign long-term with them.

In return for Burnett, Baltimore would send the Marlins pitching prospect Hayden Penn, right-handed reliever Jorge Julio and outfielder Admin Bigbie. The Orioles also could throw in left-handed reliever Steve Kline.

Cub life for Pierre?

Jul 18 - The Marlins are considering selling Juan Pierre, who would be a dream leadoff hitter for the Cubs, the Chicago Tribune reports. The Cubs dump might choose to drop prospects for the center fielder.

Hit the road, Jack?

Jul 18 - According to the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, the Marlins are giving serious consideration to firing manager Jack McKeon in an effort to shake up one of baseball's biggest disappointments. The top candidate to replace McKeon, 74, would be Yankees bench coach Joe Girardi, a National League source said. Other names being considered are former Marlins managers Jim Leyland and Jeff Torborg, Devil Rays manager Lou Piniella, former Red Sox manager Grady Little and Braves third-base coach Fredi Gonzalez.

I would be happy to have Pavano back in a Marlins uniform. We all know what he did here last year, but that contract that he has just plain sucks! Also, would the Yankees be willing to take Lowell as well, or is this just Burnett? I don't know about that Baltimore trade...I mean Bigbie isn't bad, but I would rather have Cabrera then Penn. Although they are taking Lowells money off of our hand, and that would also free up some money if we are willing to go after another big time player at the deadline. So I guess I do see where this makes sense, I just don't like it, at this point in time...but maybe it will bring us more players as the deadline nears. Time will tell.

If you want Pinella you should just stay with McKeon. He's the same type of manager as Jack. We have a bunch of pussies on this team, you need a guy that's not going to freak on the players.

Can't really call them rumors anymore though.

Not a matter of "if" anymore, but a matter of "when and where"
