July 21, 200521 yr i still think conine cause he was here in the beginning and is back again. he's been in the organization for a while. i know castillo has been here since '97 i think but in '97 (or earlier) we didn't really know him well or like him as much as we do now. he was like a chris aguila at second base in '97.
July 21, 200521 yr Luis has been a starter almost his whole career as a Marlin...can't say the same for Niner despite all the consequences.....Luis has also never left the team.....I agree Das. 869019 it wasn't niner's choice to leave the team wayne sold him off!
July 21, 200521 yr Conine. You can debate who is more worthy, who is more important over a career, but he was the first one to be called Mr Marlin. When you refer to Mr Marlin, people know you're talking about Conine. It's like Reggie Jackson. Other people have had success in the postseason since then, but there's only one Mr October. Conine will always be known as Mr Marlin. It's already on his baseball-reference.com page.
July 21, 200521 yr When I was 8 years old watching the Marlins in 93. The player that stood out to me was Jeff Conine, he became my favorite player and helpd me fall in love with marlins and stay a marlins fan when i moved to cleveland. He's been there through some of the marlins best moments (93-97-03) and through the growing pains and the firesale of the franchise. Conine may not lead any of the Marlins stats, but to me he is Mr. Marlin. I also support this with the fact that when fans of other teams look at what player reminds them of the marlins, most say it is Jeff Conine. When I was at Kent, one Indians fan asked me that because I am a Marlins fan, that automatically indicates that i would have sex with Jeff Conine. As imuture as that is, If fans of other teams look at Jeff Conine as Mr. Marlin as well as the marlin fan base who loves him, he is Mr. Marlin. Luis Castillo makes a very strong argument, he plays hard everyday, has racked up alot of stats as a marlin and took less money to stay in teal. I can think of him as a modern day Mr. Marlin...but IMO Jeff Conine is the all time Mr. Marlin
July 21, 200521 yr Author Since Wayne was mentioned..... Should we also mention Carl Barger, was the role he played truly important to this franchise or is he more a symbolic figure? Also I think Bryan Harvey should at least get a mention....it was his work in 93 closing out games that was extremely vital toward any success built upon in that first year.
July 21, 200521 yr maybe its just me...but the marlins have always been a hard working team that no matter what their record is, have always made me be proud to be a marlins fan, i laughed, i dried, i shouted, i hooted, i hollared...i live and die with every game and am proud of anyone who puts on the teal and black, these are the colors that i bleed, even if idiot red sox fans spit on me, push me, threathen me or whatever, the marlins are life, and i live for this...PS...Conine is the original Mr. Marlin, Castillo is glen rice over at second(catch and shoot with turning the double plays), Mikey is old faithful, and cabs and willis will carry us into the future...hopefully by being lifetime marlins because i believe that not even the sky is the limit for these 2
July 22, 200521 yr Luis Castillo is probably the most underated marlin ever, and that goes for alot of aspects of the game. inside and out. From what he does on the field, to his commitment to the team. You can always count on sure louie to be there, but his problem is that he has never been this huge fan favorite type of player and I have no idea why, it sucks Hes not Mr Marlin, but he is surely the unsung hero behing the success of the Marlins in recent years and is great example in a lot of ways now Miguel Cabrera should become (if he isnt already) the face of this franchise for years to come ... same goes with Willis
July 22, 200521 yr If Mike Lowell doesn't get traded, he'll become the new Mr. Marlins once Steve retires. You guys are confusing the face of the franchise with the title of Mr. Marlin. Cabrera and D-Train may be the current face of the franchise, but they'll never be Mr. Marlin.
July 22, 200521 yr Castillo is not only underrated, but under-appreciated as well. He has been among the very best defensive 2B and leadoff hitters in baseball. I think while other guys are the "face" of the Marlins, whether its Conine or The Boy Called Cabs and Willis, Castillo was the heart of the team. He was here during the dark days of the post-firesale years and was crucial to the "smallball" aspect of our 02 and 03 seasons.
July 22, 200521 yr Also I think Bryan Harvey should at least get a mention....it was his work in 93 closing out games that was extremely vital toward any success built upon in that first year. 869317 I don't think on-field production is that major part of being Mr. Marlin (you may be able to argue some bench players being Mr. Marlin). It sure helps, like in Conine's case, but Conine was certainly the face of that team early on. He stayed longer than anyone else I believe, and Harvey was only there one (or two) years.

And if we are using longetivity then its my pick.
July 22, 200521 yr I love Luis, but Conine is Mr. Marlin because he started for the 3 most important moments in Marlin history: Opening day in 93', the 97' WS and the 03' WS. (I'm aware Luis was on the team in 97' but was a non-factor)

Cabrera and D-Train may be the current face of the franchise, but they'll never be Mr. Marlin. 869584 let me ask you something, you say that cabs and dontrelle are the face, but never mr. marlin you are saying they are not synonamous... well then what exactly does mr. marlin mean? what does the face of the franchise mean i would tend to agree that all of the forementioned all have their reasons that would give them the crown, but IMO, its Dontrelle Willis. Juanky had an excellent post earlier in the thread...but heres my question. If the marlins don't trade AA and Matt Clement and acquire Dontrelle Willis from the cubbies, whwere is this team right now? Portland? Washington? Las Vegas? Dontrelle Willis single-handedly saved the Florida Marlins. on those nights in 2003 after the fish were floundering into early may, seeing their skip fired and two days later dontrelle making his first start, there was a 12,000 person or greater in attendence on games that he pitched, i remember going to a cubs came on a sunday with 40,000 people there. In addition, the publicity and national coverage. ESPN games (I.E. Dontrelle Vs. Randy Johnson), 42,000 people sunday night game, FOX, ATH, PTI, Rome is Burning... also his unselfishness (going to bullpen in world series), his grit and the way he plays the games (diving plays and headfirst slides) people were talking marlins baseball because of him. you say Mr. Marlin, i say Dontrelle Willis
July 22, 200521 yr Jeff Conine is Mr.Marlin, but after that definatly Castillo. Beyond those 2 I think its anyone's guess. I love Lowell on the list. Just had a random thought... I used to love when they called Cliff Floyd "The Big Fish" on sports center. Other then Floyd who else would you consider to be our big fish?
