July 22, 200521 yr Another enlightening subject. a) are they really needed b) do we need one lay it out there. again spam this topic with idiocy and i will delete your crap and possibly suspend you for being an idiot, cause well thats me. :hat
July 22, 200521 yr Author now me... a) overrated, i would prefer pitchers that can pitch. b) we dont need one....if you want to argue for us needing one, mecir essentially is that player. once we get AA back our bullpen will be just fine. AA Mota Jones I would like our chances nightly.

July 22, 200521 yr The lefty specialist is overrated big time. Sure it may be nice to have one but like you said with AA Jones and Mota I feel pretty confident with the pen to handle left handers. Also Mecir who traditionally handles lefties pretty well. Marlins should not be in the market for one.

July 22, 200521 yr Lefty Specialist is very overrated. Its almost a luxury to have one. Though, for a person like Mike Stanton, who can only get lefties out now, it works. If the pitcher is lefty and can get lefties out on a regular basis but is horrid against righty bats, then sure, the lefty specialist works.
July 22, 200521 yr I dont think they are that over-rated. Id love to have a lefty in the pen that we can bring in vs. a lefty that struggles against a left handed thrower. Yes, our team needs one. No, VDS and Perisho arent the answer.
July 22, 200521 yr I was listening to "Baseball this A.M." on my XM radio about a month ago, and this very topic was being discussed. Admin Bowa was talking about how teams will put a lefty "specialist" in the bullpen, just to say they have one in there. Even if the guy sucks, i.e. Matt Perisho. His point was give me a guy that can pitch...righty, lefty, side arm, under hand. Throw strikes and get batters out, that is all that matters. I tend to agree. Having a lefty just to have one is over rated. I'd rather have somebody that can strike guys out or get ground outs, no matter which side of the border he pitches from. By the way, if you are a baseball fan, XM radio is the shiz-nit!!!!
July 22, 200521 yr Ideally... no and no. But as long as Jack ignores the bench, there's a spot for LOOGY on the roster and you know that he'll be used. Hopefully whoever that is won't screw up the efforts of what looks to be a great pen.
July 22, 200521 yr A. They aren't really needed unless you're in a postseason series and the lefty-righty splits are obscene. Otherwise, I think it's a waste of a roster spot, because if a guy can pitch, he should be able to get hitters out regardless of whether they hit left handed or right handed. B. No. Mecir fills the role, though if you can get a lefty who knows how to pitch and also gets righties out well there should be a spot for him.
July 22, 200521 yr 1)yes 2)its me.... Or if you cant get me... A good LBS can be good when needed, but if your guy is Parisho, there is no point. Whether or not you need one depends on what you can get.
July 22, 200521 yr There are certain pitchers (and they're not all left-handed) who excell at getting left-handed hitters out. They're worth having. They can come in and get the one out when you need it, or they can turn around a switch hitter who is weaker from the right side. Too many pitchers who are left-handed are considered lefty specialists just because of how they throw with no bearing on whether they can pitch or get out lefty hitters at a higher rate. Ignoring the latter, the former are worth having.
July 22, 200521 yr a) If you've got a true lefty specialist, it's a good thing for your team. But no, they're not "really needed." b) We're fine with Mecir against lefties. I wouldn't go nuts trying to find a lefty out of the pen.
July 22, 200521 yr A good lefty specialist is essential to a good bullpen. Pitchers like John Franco, Jesse Orosco and Dennis Cook have had outstanding careers domintaing lefty batters. For some reason lefty pitchers have an inate advantage over. Certain managers, TLR and Cox, love to exploit this matchup. :thumbup
July 22, 200521 yr i think its both overrated and a luxary, if you have a good one, great for you, if you dont, i still think that if you have the talent in the bullpen, it wont matter much...i mean worse comes to worse...if we really need to get a couple lefties out come playoff time, we can throw the dtrain in certain spots as i remember he was pretty successful doing that in 03...plus i think mecir has done a great job this year
July 22, 200521 yr i would say yes for the mere fact that it ruffles things up... it can change the way the game is managed for example if u have a 'lefty specialist' in the pen and they have a lefty coming up to bat, lets say....Cliff Floyd, and then he is pinch hit for just so he doesn't face a lefty...then they bring in a right handed pitcher to face the other guy...thus the lefty specialist changes the face of the game, without throwing a pitch cause now they have a big bat out of their line up

Also, you don't often see a centerpiece of the lineup taken out because of bringing in the specialist either. How many times have we taken Carlos out of the game entirely because a lefty came in to face him? It's more something to force a team to waste a pinch hitter, which can't necessarily be neglected, because if the game goes to extras that looks pretty huge.
July 23, 200521 yr I dont think that there should be such a thing as a "specialist" ... its kind of a vague term, but It does work out since most lefties dont hit well against lefties ... its simply taking your chances out there with the matchups and believing in the whole porcentage factor either way its not all that needed but sure as hell is usefull on a lot of occassions, I think thats where the term comes from and why they become a "specialist" since they simply come in on those clutch moments when Jim Thome is up to bat for example ... oh yeah, we did pretty good in 03 without one
