I just heard on the news that today Hawaii became the first state in the nation to place a cap on gas prices. Hopefully more states follow suit.

 

I can't find any articles since this just happened a few hours ago, but i'm sure there will be a few later tonight or tomorrow.

I really hope it starts a trend. That, or we find ways to steal gas and get away with it.

Perhaps driving more fuel efficient cars would help.

It needs to be done because on the trend we're going it's not going to be profitable enough for truckers which would certainly get Washington's attention.

Ive heard our gas prices really arent as bad as some other nations.

Our Poverty isn't nearly as bad as other nations as well, that doesn't mean we can't fight it.

 

Someone has to make a stand because they know we need it and without a defense it will continue to rise as well as prices and the income of those who depend on Gas will lower.

I mean, it's not like the gas prices are going up because all the gas companies got together and decided to s*** on the people. The prices are going up because the gas companies were all, "oh, s***, we better raise our prices or we're going to start losing money." They're not going to sell gas at a loss, period.

Stupid-ass idea. We're bitching about gas that costs #2.25 a gallon when it costs $7-8 a gallon in Europe. Granted, they have higher taxes, but damn, we're just pansies that feel the need to drive 8 passenger SUVs even though we usually don't have more than 4 people in the vehicle and never use it for its intended purpose (going off road). I blame stupid-ass Americans buying big worthless vehicles more than anything. You know what happens when demand is high for a good? The price goes up. People are so damn stupid.

yup, there will be a shortage and gas companies will either be lossing money or be in a position where they can not MAXIMIZE their profit. They still may run a profit though, the effect is ambigious and will depend on the actual numerical elasticity of gas (which tends to be high).

 

the companies will still be selling gas though, they will sell at a point of output that minimizes their losses. Gas will still be sold but there will be a shortage. There will be people who would be willing and able to buy gas that wont be able to b/c of the price cap.

 

i dont think the price cap is necessary. while i dont really care about gas companies turning a profit, i do care about the net loss to society that will come from the shortage of gas. there is a dead weight loss inherent in any situation will where price or quantity is held in the market.

HAHA. I have a PA speaker on my Grand Am and I 'boo' people driving Humvees down the road. I always make fun of people who drive these large offroad gas guzzlers in a city environment. What the heck is the point of buying a Humvee to drive it to the mall?!? I think it's silly. I would never want to own a vehicle that drinks a gallon of gas every time the light turns green. Yuck.

My impression has always been that the profit margin for gas is pretty small. You squeeze the gas companies too much and they're going to start losing money.

 

I'm sure you're right that they'll still sell gas to Hawaii. But I can't imagine why. I I were the owner of Shell or whatever, I'd tell Hawaii to stick it up their rear, and then try to grab a bigger share of some other market where I can actually make money.

 

I've never taken an Econ class, so I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. But I'm wondering if your scenario--about setting a selling point in order to minimize losses--might only apply in cases where there's a cap on the whole market. I mean Hawaii ain't the only game in town. I'm not gonna sell my gas at $2.50 a gallon (or whatever) to Hawaii when I can sell it for $2.70 somewhere else, period. Especially considering that I'm incurring greater costs selling in Hawaii, whether that's due to shipping costs or something else.

Minivans are smaller and usually more spacious than SUVs, but they don't do it for people because they don't have the image that SUVs do.

My wife's pregnant so we went shopping for something a little bigger & had more storage than her previous VW Beetle, lol. Wound up with a mini-SUV but at least it's better mpg than most of the behemoths out there.

H1's actually get very decent gas mileage because of their turbo diesel engines, infact better than many family sedan's on the road. Regardless, there are only 500 to 750 Hummer H1's produced every year, so it doesn't matter if they got 1mpg or 100mpg, there are so few of them on the road to make any sort of difference, and I can assure you the people who can afford them don't exactly care about gas prices.

 

H2's on the other hand are disgusting, however people obsess over it way too much and think only large vehicles get bad mileage. I can point out a number of minivans, pickup trucks, etc. that get equally as bad mileage.

Good luck finding comparable sized minivans having worse gas mileage than SUVs considering minivans are by and large lighter, more aerodynamic, have smaller engines, and are FWD. Also, pick ups get crappy gas mileage because they're SUVs without the bed being covered up.
