Nagging injury stalls Gonzalez's return to lineup

MIAMI GARDENS ? The sore elbow that has kept shortstop Alex Gonzalez out of action since Friday is more serious than initially thought.

Gonzalez still felt soreness when he woke up Wednesday, prompting the shortstop to have an MRI. Results of the test were negative.

Gonzalez said he believes he hurt his elbow while making a throw last weekend in Arizona. He played Friday in San Francisco but was scratched from the lineup just before Saturday's game. He has not returned to action since then, and Damion Easley has replaced him.

After an X-ray in San Francisco showed inflammation, the Marlins initially thought he could return to action Tuesday.

"How long is it going to be? I don't know. It was sore today,'' manager Jack McKeon said Wednesday.

Now, Gonzalez said he is hoping to return Friday. He said he feels pain when he rears back to throw.

Gonzalez is batting.280 but his power numbers are down. He has four home runs and 33 RBI. Last season, he hit 23 home runs and had 79 RBI and batted.232.

Willis woes: The Marlins hope an extra day of rest will help Dontrelle Willis snap a three-game losing streak tonight.

Willis is 3-1 in four games in which he started on more than the usual four days' rest. His last start on extra rest was June 8, when he defeated Seattle. He made his next eight starts on normal rest, including the All-Star break.

"I think the extra day is going to freshen him up because he hasn't had an extra day for a while,'' pitching coach Mark Wiley said.

Willis (13-6, 3.23) is healthy and his velocity is normal but he has allowed 23 runs in 13 innings for a 15.92 ERA. Since he'd averaged just 4 1/3 innings in each of his past three starts, Willis had volunteered last week to pitch in relief.

McKeon is so optimistic that he offered a variation on Willis' "D-Train" nickname.

"I think the A-Train is going to get back on track,'' McKeon said. "We need him. We need him and A.J. (Burnett) and (Josh) Beckett.''

Trade breeze: The Marlins might have cooled on the idea of trading Burnett before Sunday's non-waiver trading deadline, but they continue to search for relief pitching.

The Marlins reportedly spoke this week with the Diamondbacks about Class AAA reliever Matt Herges.

McKeon believes teams will wait to make trades.

"I think there will be a few made closer to the end,'' he said. "Do I think we'll make any? I don't know.''

Conine's eatery: Outfielder Jeff Conine has joined the list of athletes with restaurants. Conine's Clubhouse Grill will open for lunch today in the Sheridan Plaza at Sheridan Street and State Road 441 in Broward County. The grand opening is Aug. 14.

"I have a night job now that's sort of my main gig, but I will be there more in the off-season,'' Conine said.

The menu will feature an 18-ounce rib-eye steak, after Conine's No. 18, a Conine Club Sandwich and drinks named after other Marlins ? from bar drinks such as the Miguelito (Miguel Cabrera) and Lowell-jito-tino (Mike Lowell), the D-Train (Dontrelle Willis) and Beckett Breeze (Josh Beckett).

Love the name of the drinks. If he added a cigar bar, he could name that after Jack. I will have to check out his place the next time I come down.

The Beckett Breeze sounds like it will appeal to me. I wonder what's in the drinks.

Boys, just got back from conines club house. The directions in the article are sort of corect and sort of incorrect. It is in sheridan plaza which is on sheridan and 52 ave. not 441. Heres the Breakdown the bar is lined with id say 8 35" high definiton plasmas playing ESPN. Attire is casual i dont think you should go in there wearing jeans. The food is pretty good and prices are average. I had a cheese Burger and coke with fries for 10$ (not including tip) which is reasonable. There was no-one there, a good 10 people sitting in for lunch which made service fast. One Last thing is that they are open for lunch and dinner everyday now not the 14th of August, I made sure I asked. I would recomend Conines clubhouse beacuse of the scenery and expierience, I want to go again and try one of the steaks.

Attire is casual i dont think you should go in there wearing jeans.

Go pantless? :mischief

What about the decor... Is there a lot of baseball memorabilia up on the walls? Marlins stuff?

Pantless? :mischief2

I was surprised by the Decor actually The theme is teal and black on the outside and a sort of cherry wood color on the inner with the occasional picture. The menu is decorated with faint pictures of The Marlins and Conine.
