I don't like Bill Robinson. That said, I am surprised no one has spotted Mikey's problem.

In my frustration for not understanding, I reiterate that Bill Robinson should be replaced.

Unfortunately, I can't think of a replacement. Can't believe that no one on our roster can help Lowell.

By way of desperate insanity, I would have Mikey spend some batting practice swinging lefty!

He was there for the team all month with a .322 average, That average has gone up each month drasticly, hes well on his way to being Mike Lowell

Look, as long as he's not an automatic out, I'm OK with whatever he's doing for preparation. He's showing signs of life, and really, I think this is Mike Lowell from here on. Like it or not, I don't think we're going to see a power explosion from him this season or maybe ever again.

Power is not always about hitting home runs. Even when he was hitting 20-30 home runs, Mike would say hes not a home run hitter. Even with his struggles at the plate, Lowell is tied for sixth in the league in doubles with 29 and is only 3 doubles behind the leader. That shows that the power is still there, regardless of the home run total. And with the month he just had (.301, 25 hits, 8 doubles, 2 home runs, 14 rbi), I expect him to finish the season strong.

The fact is that Mike Lowell is making more contact. He's a guy who has demonstrated power in the past, so by making contact, he's increasing his chances of hitting doubles and home runs. I'm happy his average has picked up.

I'm have my own theories on Mike Lowell, but to push forward this thread, I'll keep them to myself.

 

That said, I think you're seeing the "Alex Gonzalezation" of Mike Lowell, where Robinson is refocusing his thinking and approach during each at bat, from driving the ball to making contact.

 

If Mike winds up hitting anywhere near .300 for the rest of the season, and continues on the path he's on producing doubles at the pace he is now, I for one will be very satisfied with his overall performance for the season, regardless of how many HRs he hits.

Not every double is a smoked into the gap though. The power is no longer there, but atleast his swing is looking better each game. And even if Mike would always say he wasnt a homerun hitter, the fact he hit 25 per year proved otherwise.

Palmerio has tested positive. I think more players (especially good guys) use them more than people think. We are talking about JOBS and millions of dollars on the line. Why wouldn't they cheat?

He's been "slumping" since after the all star break 2004 so I'm thinking this is how he is.

My opinion on all this is that Lowell should start a new, even more intensive weight-training regimen and build more muscle mass in his upper body. He's going to need it from this point forward, because it's apparent to me that he's reached his peak physically and is now in steady decline. As they say, he's "no spring chicken"; so he's going to have to work harder from now on if he wants to recover his lost power and bat speed.

I did see the problems with his fundamentals too and wondered the same thing that you have, especially since Bill Robinson get's paid good $$$ to solve those problems. However, Mikey is hitting and I won't question his groove until the end of the season when the Marlins prepare for 2006. If Mikey finishes with 10-15 HRs, 70+ RBI, and about .260+ AVG, I would be satisfied for this season after all of his struggles. HRs to me are over-rated. Not that Mikey is the same type of player as these following players, but you can drive in alot of runs with not that many HRs. Remember, these guys that broke the 100 RBI mark without that many HRs: Tommy Herr, Willie McGee, Glenn Wilson, Hubie Brooks---just to name a few. Mikey is similar to what Hubie Brooks and Glenn Wilson were, except for the fact that he hits a few more homers. Oh yeah, and Mikey drove in 100 RBI a few years ago with just 18 HRs.

 

Just a thought, but I'm with you on his batting fundamentals.

 

Let's not question it though while he's hitting and the fish are winning.
